When PAPER invited me to be a guest editor for April 2016, I thought, "Let's not only show everyone exactly what Gypsy Sport is made of, but also who we're made of — a crazy crew of models and street-cast muses." Gypsy Sport is about these people, a diverse tribe of outsiders and misfits. It's about those who have faced adversity and, because of that, can appreciate people from all walks of life. Fashion is more fun when everyone's invited. That's why we try to preserve a cool vibe of love at every shoot or show we do.
In the gallery below, I wanted to put the spotlight on my team and 15 amazing friends and have them help show off the last 6 seasons of my brand. During the photo sessions, I asked: "Are you more Gypsy or Sport?" And no matter their answers, these people are 100% real!
(L-R) Matthew (@matthewlogos) and Fiishbonez (@fiiishbonez) Matthew is a Brooklyn native who loves fashion, sports and the sober life. 100% Sport. My bro Fiishbonez is a super talented b-boy with incredible style, silver grills and a heart of gold. 50% Gypsy / 50% Sport.
(L-R) Ilir Shanja (@ilirshanja) and Maya Monés (@br0nz3_g0dd3ss) Ilir walked in my first public runway show at Washington Square Park, and he has been in every show since. 22% Gypsy / 78% Sport. Maya is a trans model, dancer and muse. She's a staple at our parties, and she also walked in our latest runway show. 100% Gypsy.
(L-R) Jacopo (@theinsaneballer17) and Seashell (@sleepy.angel)
Jacopo calls himself a "freaky motherfucker punk from Rome." 50% Gypsy/50% Sport. Seashell stumbled into one of our street castings and I totally fell for her. She's a free‐spirited and self-empowered tomboy. 100% Gypsy.
(L-R) Daniel Oh (@lyricaldaniel) and Natacha Sertil Poupee (@sertil_n)
Model, muse and new mother Diandra; Bronx stripper-turned-TV-sensation on Revolt Network Cardi B (pictured on previous slide); musician and model Daniel Oh; and stunning androgyne/stylist/model Natacha, the current face of our Spring/Summer 2016 campaign, all walked in our Spring/Summer 2016 show and are some of the realest individuals I know. Each one of them has persevered for their place in fashion, just like me. They all claim to be 100% Gypsy.
(L-R) Lester Garcia (@onapinkplanet), Rio Uribe (@riosport), Leo Bona-Balibar (@leihyo), Ida Dyberg (@ida_dyberg) and Estelle Mata (@estehlluh)
I met Lester years ago when I worked at Balenciaga and he was assisting Balenciaga stylist Marie-Amélie Sauvé. Now I'm proud to have him not only as a friend but also as the chief stylist and fashion director at Gypsy Sport. Estelle is my ride-or-die chick. We met at a GHE20G0TH1K party in 2014; at the time, she was handling business for a famous graffiti artist. She really loved Gypsy Sport and immediately joined the team. She's been overseeing all of our communications ever since. Leo and Ida are new models to the family. We loved them so much at castings that we decided to add them to the shoot, and I expect to be working with them a lot more this year. Lester is 100% Gypsy, I'm 60% Gypsy and 40% Sport, Leo is 100% Sport, Ida is 100% Gypsy and Estelle is 50% Gypsy and 50% Sport.
(L-R) Mauza Antonio (mauzaantonio) and Alain Polanco (@alaingrpolanco)
Mauza and Alain both modeled in the Fall/Winter 2016 runway show. Mauza hails from Angola and says modeling keeps her happy because it allows her to help her family. She says she's 50% Gypsy / 50% Sport. Alain is a model, actor and filmmaker with big dreams of shooting a film in his native Dominican Republic someday. He is 20% Gypsy / 80% Sport.
