The Burkman Bros Make Tourism Hot

Burkman Bros,
the bohemian-meets-global-cool label designed by
brothers Ben and Doug Burkman, just launched a new capsule collection for
Urban Outfitters
called "The Tourist." The opening party Monday at the store's Fifth Avenue
location was filled with stylish threads, hot guys (both the models and the
guests -- just look how cute the Burkmans are!) and had a tropical vibe. "We wanted to extend our collection to a broader audience at
a lower price point while keeping it in the same spirits at the Burkman
Bros. collection," Ben told me. "The Tourist is designed for the
younger, hipper brother of the main collection." I have already started
to pile on the bracelets and the printed shorts are ready for Memorial
Day weekend in Montauk as well as my upcoming jaunt with artist Ryan
McGinness to South Africa (B Bros. is all about international chic). Even though
the collection, "The Tourist," shares the name with the dismal dud of a Johnny
Depp/Angelina Jolie movie, the B Bros. have
not seen it. "But it is definitely on our Netflix queue now," Doug added.
I'll take the collection and bag the movie.

A New Hoodie for Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook
CEO Mark Zuckerberg (who I will forever get visually confused with
Jesse Eisenberg, who played him in "The Facebook Movie," aka The Social
Network) turned 28 yesterday (Happy Birthday Mark!) and is prepping for
the big Facebook IPO next week. But a poll conducted by AP-CNBC finds
that only 18% of those asked are "very confident" in his ability to to
run a company some value as high as -- yikes -- 100 billion bucks. And
when Zuckerberg wore an ill-fitting hoodie to a recent investor's
meeting, he got major flack for the immature fashion faux-pas. I have no clue how to
tell Marky Z how to run his Internet empire, but I can help in the style
dept. I suggest he trade in his slouchy sweatshirts and upgrade to something like the
Freeboard Full Zip Hoodie, a sleek, tailored staple by Woolrich John
Rich & Bros.
Why this hoodie in particular? Just look at this model and how
metro-sexy he is in this hoodie-under-a-blazer look. (The hoodie/blazer com is
the cooler version of sporting sneakers with a suit -- a look I loathe.) Message me your address on Facebook, Marky, and I'll hook you up.

Designer Ariela Suster On Sequence, El Salvador and Marc Jacobs Dreams

Even if the sun is late in shining this Spring, I'm already soaking up bright colors in my wardrobe and preparing for a hot, hot haute summer of Bohemia Luxuria, my favorite style (a little hippy, a lot of fashion). The perfect bracelets for guys, gays and mostly girls is Ariela Suster's label Sequence, which is all hand-made in her home country of El Salvador by local artisans. Not only is Suster helping the economy in El Salvador, she's also making bags, bangles and DayGlo jewels that guarantees that I will win any wrist war come beach days in Montauk. I met Suster for cocktails to talk about the Sequence style, El Salvador and her Marc Jacobs style crush.

After working in magazines, why did you want to start Sequence?

The inspiration came from a sequence of events and experiences that brought me to this point. I wanted to develop handcrafted products but I also wanted to make sure they were made in El Salvador where I'm from. I also wanted it to be something that would positively influence the lives of people in El Salvador, especially young people with unknown futures.

Did anything particular inspire your line?

The inspiration for the line, especially for my first collection, was very much about illustrating my personal journey, and the influence of growing up in El Salvador blended with my experiences and living in New York.

Where do you make the jewelry?

It is all made handcrafted in El Salvador by a group of young artisans. This venture into jewelry began when I met a young boy named Oscar, who was selling his products on the streets in El Salvador. We met and began an incredible journey. I traveled almost everyday to his home, located in the outskirts of San Salvador. This project brought together a group of almost 15 young artisans, who were all struggling to find jobs and most of them had dropped out of school at the sight of no future job opportunities. I decided to create a small workshop not only to create the SEQUENCE jewelry collection, but to teach younger girls and boys the art and craft.

Tell me about your background.

I grew up in El Salvador and moved to the United States for College. I attended Skidmore College where I studied psychology and dance and then moved to Boston to do a Graduate Program in marketing at Harvard. After school I moved to New York and started my career as an intern at Harpers Bazaar, then a fashion assistant at Lucky Magazine and then went to Instyle Magazine, where I was the Fashion and Accessories Editor for five years.

Where do you see Sequence in five years?

I'm planning on continuing to grow the line into more categories, beginning with a focus on accessories, then venturing into apparel, while mixing handcrafted fabrics and color. I eventually will be tapping into homeware. I see Sequence bringing major change and new opportunities to young people living in risk communities in El Salvador. I am starting to develop a program of workshops with young artisans creating my products. I would love, also, to collaborate with other designers, and create an exclusive capsules of jewelry to have in their stores and runway. My dream would be a collaboration with Sequence jewelry and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Read's Clothing Project Founder Read Wall On His Do-Gooding Preppy Line + Drop-Crotch Pants

Even though I like my preppy fashions with a spike of punk rock -- I can't resist pairing L.L. Bean bluchers or Brooks Brothers button downs with some spiked-out Trash and Vaudeville threads -- I was born "true prep." My latest prep obsession is the label Read's Clothing Project (or R.C.P. for that monogrammed feel). The label, started by, duh, a preppy guy named Read Wall, fuses East Coast boarding school classics with sleek cuts (who wants a baggy anything in 2012?) and hip fabrics, most of which come from Japan. And for every item bought, R.C.P. donates something to a child in need. I met Read for coffee to talk shop and shopping.

Tell me about your background and why and how you decided to launch a clothing line?

I don't really have a background in fashion, but I have always loved preppy, American clothing. Through high school, as I started to buy more clothes from classic American brands like Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren, I realized that there was something about the fit that was not quite right, so I started taking different items to the tailor to see what they could do. After a while, I realized that I had a pretty solid vision for a brand and, considering myself an entrepreneur above all else, decided to take the plunge and start my own line.

There's also another side to the narrative: throughout my life I've been lucky enough to travel around the world quite a bit. I've been to Africa about four times and every time I'm there I try to do something to help education initiatives in whatever area I'm in, whether it's teach a class, give a talk, or help set up a classroom. When I graduated college in 2009, I thought about teaching or working for an NGO in Africa, but couldn't find the right opportunity. So, when
starting Read's Clothing Project, I decided to tie in a social benefit: for every product we sell, R.C.P. gives a book to a child in need. Through our Titles program, customers can actually choose the book they'd like to donate.

I worship Tokyo and a lot of your fabrics are from Japan. What makes Japanese materials so special?

The Japanese still weave a lot of their fabrics on 100+ year-old looms which gives the fabrics an incredible authenticity and texture. It's really important, especially for shirting, for a fabric to feel personal. Combine that with exceptional fit, and you've got something worth wearing over and over again.

You are mostly doing shirts and ties. Did you grow up having to wear coat and tie to school like I did?

I went to prep school in Washington, DC and my years wearing a coat-and-tie dress code were probably the most influential in my overall aesthetic. It was very preppy but the essence of real preppy style is breaking the rules of the code in subtle or not so subtle ways. It's a breeding ground for American sprezzatura.

I started the collection based on the perfect slim fit button down shirt since it is kind of my uniform -- both then and now. It's an item that can be worn in just about every situation, outside of the gym. Or in the gym, depending on what gym you're at, I suppose.

Where would you like to see the line in 5 years?

In five years I'd like to see R.C.P. established as a global bastion of the American prep aestheticWe are working on a full collection for the fall and getting ready to shoot our
lookbook which is an exciting and big step for the brand. I think it will really prove
our position as an all-American lifestyle brand.

What is one thing every guy should have in his wardrobe and one thing he should never have in his wardrobe?

I think a guy should have a solid shirting collection. No need to go all Jay Gatsby, but a few ginghams, chambrays, and go-to-hell madrases would serve every guy well. And you can never have too many oxfords. And an item no one should have? I guess I'll go with drop-crotch pants. Those are terrible!

Tie Us Up with Benjo's

When I can't pony up the moolah for more
Margiela, I make a style statement with small, but bold touches, like my
shoelaces. So thank the fashion gods that I discovered Ben Herts,
a.k.a. the "colored lace guy" and the man behind Benjo's,
which makes shoelaces in yummy jelly bean colors. My lace-up Thom
Browne oxfords now pop with hot pink and my suede Coach bucks scream
their way into a room with bright orange laces. Hertz, who works in the
"conservative industry" of real estate development in Minneapolis, came
up with the idea for Benjo's while on vacation in Rome. His shoelace
snapped so he picked up a pair of red, waxed cotton laces and everywhere
he went people kept asking where he got his shoes. "When it came time
to replace the pair, I found it impossible to find red anywhere," he
explains. "So I found someone to make them and Benjo's was born." The
line which is sold in over 50 stores worldwide and online,
now includes over 15 colors with names (and stories, which are all on
the Benjo's website) like "Cousin Traci," "Monster's Spit" and Hertz's
first and favorite the Roman red lace "Rosso Scuderia." "Our laces are
positioned as a luxury product," he says, adding "but at $6 retail and still
very accessible." Needless to say, I have all 15 colors.

Nightlife's Top 10 New York Moments of 2011 According to Peter Davis

Manhattan is all about the moment and the most memorable moments often
happen at night, at parties in every corner of the city. Though I love
nothing more than a marathon of Intervention episodes in bed surrounded
by carbs, I do my share of hitting the town. Here are my top ten
nightlife highlights (and one semi- low light) of 2011.

1. Let's get the dud out of the way first: the premiere of W/E at MOMA
and after-party at The Crown which is the Upper East Side's trendiest
restaurant. I love me some (Sex book era) Madonna, but this mess of a
movie about Wallis Simpson (which is a fascinating subject) put me to
sleep faster than a double dose of Lunesta. And Madonna comparing
herself before the screening to "revolutionary" artists like Frida Kahlo
and Patti Smith, who was in the audience, only made me loathe the film
more afterwards. And the party -- don't even get me started -- as they
say! Madonna sat behind a phalanx of burly security guards with her BFF
Steven Klein as a small group of guests gawked at her like a peacock in a
cage. I stayed for one "W/E" decorated cupcake and then bolted home. (Photo by Patrick Mcmullan)

2. The Paper Nightlife Awards at Hiro Ballroom: OK, I am biased as I
obvi love Paper, but I got to present an award with pop sensation
Estelle, who held my hand on stage and was just a joy to be with. We
became pals and now tweet at each other, a sign of very public love. And
I never even told her how much I love her music. Estelle, I love you and your music. (Photo by Rebecca Smeyne)

3. The 17th Annual Artwalk NY benefit featured Shepard Fairey, an artist
I respect and collect and the money raised goes to my favorite charity:
The Coalition for the Homeless
BUT I will admit having my picture snapped with my fellow cohost Coco
Rocha was the stupendously superficial supermodel thrill of the evening.
Must post photo with Coco on Facebook immediately. (Photo by Patrick McMullan)

4. Cohosting the Project Paz [ benefit with my "wife," the stunning style siren Eugenia Gonzalez
Ruiz-Olloqui (try saying her name 10 times, fast, in a Spanish accent)
was a blast. I not only got to hang with friends like Vogue's Valerie
Boster, David Lipke, menswear master Carlos Campos, Kristian Laliberte
and jewelry designer Eddie Borgo to name a few, but at one point someone
asked if I would have my photo snapped with "the first lady of Mexico"
Margarita Zavala. Like duh, I was next to Zavala in a flash, pun
intended. (Photo of Peter, Gonzalez Ruiz-Olloqui and Valerie Boster by Neil Rasmus/BFAnyc.com.)

5. Halloween at Allison Sarofim's townhouse is always a major night. The
theme was cabaret so I splashed some glitter around my eyes, threw on
my black tie and a top hat and attempted to channel Joel Grey. You see
everyone you adore in New York, decked in the most beautifully elaborate
and insane costumes in one night - what more could a guy ask for? (Photo of Christian Leone and Peter by Zac Sebastian)

6. The lunch (yes, I do function from 9 am-5pm) for Valentino, hosted by the Couture Council at FIT lured every big name in the style universe
under one roof at Lincoln Center. I sat at the table right next to
Valentino, Daphne Guinness and Anna Wintour. Eye candy for days. And
that's just table one. (Photo of Valentino and Diane Von Furstenberg by Patrick McMullan)

7. The one night only re-opening of Studio 54 was divinely decadent. And
I shamelessly grabbed former porn starlet Traci Lords for an iPhone
photo op. I never approach celebrities for photos or small talk unless
they are sex industry stars or convicted criminals. Hence, my prized
photo of myself with my (now) friend Heidi Fleiss taken years ago in
Hollywood. You gotta do what you gotta do. Miss you Heidi! (Photo by Marco Ovando.)

8. Charlotte Ronson's beauty product line for Sephora launch dinner at
Hotel Chantelle was fabulous. I am a sucker for anything Ronson -- I love
Charlotte, Samantha and Annabelle and Mark is both my style icon and
celebu-crush. And mom Ann Dexter-Jones is one of the coolest women in
NYC. So a Ronson dinner filled with New York natives I have known for
years and chic fashion folk? A+. Enough said. (Photo via Zimbio)

9. The opening of the Wooster Street Social Club was packed and loud and
wild. This is N.Y. Ink TV star Ami James' new tattoo parlor and not
only has Ami himself tatted up my arm with an Edward Gorey design, he is
one of the nicest dudes in New York. I'm already planning another Ami
tattoo as I type.

10. Finally, any late night at The Boom Boom Room/Le Bain is always a
surefire success on the disco meter. The Boom Boom Room is still the
chicest space in New York and Le Bain brings out the cutest kids. That
said, I also love me some nights at new hot spots The Electric Room (run
by Nur Khan) and Double Seven (ruled by David
Rabin). Nightlife is always best when you keep it in the family and
Manhattan is one big, happy clubbing clan. Now if only my Bungalow 8
sister would open up a new nightclub my after hours life would be
complete. (Above: Michelle Harper and Harry Brant dance on a couch during the Florence and the Machine concert at the Boom Boom Room.)

JoJo & Sofia's Unusual Tie Bars

Though Sarah Sebastian's style blog PrivyDoll keeps her busy, she's now launched a men's tie clip collection
(along with a woman's vintage revival necklace line) called JoJo &
Sofia,
named after her two grandmas. But since I don't wear women's jewelry,
the tie clips are what caught my eye - and wallet. These days, tie clips
are everywhere, thanks to Mad Men, from J. Crew to J. Press, but they
are mostly pretty conservative, save for an anchor or, if you're lucky, a
gun charm found at a vintage store. Well, Sebastian's tie clips are
anything but ordinary (think: watch parts, buttons, lions heads). "I
have always loved the look of a unique tie bar on a tie," Sebastian
tells me. "I feel like they look naked without it." And Sebastian, who
says she often designs at 2 a.m. after a night of blogging about fashion
parties, thinks tie clips can work as money clips and also can be worn
on girls. Could the Annie Hall look be coming back? "I have seen girls
rocking a tie clip. The collection was named after my two grandmothers. I
played around with their costume jewelry my whole life and began the
collection with reconstructing pieces they had and using charms they
kept on tie clips."

Julie Macklowe On Her GMHC "Style Vault Award."

Getchyer tickets fast for the Gay Men's Health Crisis's "Fashion Forward" extravaganza taking place next Thursday, November 17th, and hosted by Brad Goreski and Tracee Ellis Ross (and full disclosure: I am an event chair along with fab friends like Decades' Cameron Silver and The Blonds). The night is honoring glamazon/former Hedge Fund honcho/skincare line founder Julie Macklowe who will receive the first ever "Style Vault Award." I talked to Macklowe about style, beauty and the fight against HIV/AIDS.

What was your reaction when you found out you would be the first one to get the Style Vault Award?
I was in total shock but completely thrilled. I mean, it is such a terrific cause.

How would you describe your style?
Edgy, runways, risk taking. I like to get a wow isn't that piece amazing. sometimes I go too far, but that's all part of trial and error.

Have you picked out your dress for the night? Can you give us any hints?
Honestly, I have some things in my head, but I dress for most events about 30 minutes before I decide what to wear. Although I'm likely to wear red for the obvious reasons -- and it's the color of the season.

What products from your new line VBeauté will you be dolled up in?
VBeauté is about skin care. I will probably have minimal makeup, but you never know.

Why do you think GMHC's fight against HIV/AIDS is more important than ever in 2011?
Right now women are one of the highest at risk segments of HIV. Education about HIV/AIDS awareness is the best way towards prevention and eradicating this disease forever.

In addition to Macklowe's moment, there will be an auction and a runway show with designers Chris Benz, Thom Browne, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marlon Gobel, Sally LaPointe, Zang Toi, Timo Weiland and VPL. And besides frocks, cocktails and fabulous faces, the whole night raises money for The Gay Men's Health Crisis which has been the pioneer in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In 1984, Haring visited Melbourne, Australia and painted a mural in the Collingwood neighborhood as a present to the city. Haring's mural has suffered wear and tear over the past 1/4 of a century, so a group has formed to help restore the work of art.
Buy This: Symmetry Scarves

Los Angeles-based couple Ted Byrnes (who is a musician and worked in the
fashion industry for a flash) and wife Gena Tuso (who is a stylist)
always wanted to work together and now they have launched Symmetry a line of scarves that feature unusual and unexpected closures so you
not only don't have to worry about your scarf blowing away in the wind,
but you are basically sporting a scarf and a cool leather accessory at
the same time: a double style whammy! Symmetry comes at a perfect time
for me as I am trying to retire my bow ties and using scarves as a way
to fancy up evening looks. Every piece is hand made in LA and the
hardware pieces to close the scarf use everything from grommets to
buckles to hooks. "We liked the added aesthetic value of how the
hardware looked with the scarf, making each one individual depending on
the wearer," Byrnes tells me." And how did they come up with the name?
"With the focus being on scarves. it is so named because of the function
of the pieces," Byrnes explains, adding "And we also happened to be
listening to Morton Feldman's "Crippled Symmetry" when we were trying to
find names for the collection."

Will Banksy's Identity Be Revealed in November?

I am obsessed with stencil street artist Banksy, who is not only an art sensation but an Oscar nominee for his
documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop." There are so many Banksy tales
and rumors (most recently his war with fellow graffiti legend King
Robbo who claims to know Banksy's true identity). Like the long-anonymous fashion
designer Martin Margiela, it's amazing that Banksy has managed to keep his identity concealed in the age of Twitter and digital cameras on every phone. Now with the release of
journalist Marc Leverton's book Banksy Myths & Legends, many of
the stories about the mystery man will be revealed as fact or fiction.
Leverton spent three years researching Banksy's past from his childhood
in Bristol to his international cult status today. But will he unveil
who Banksy really is? Wait until the book hits Amazon in November to
find out.
