We never pegged Yves Saint Laurent as a label to "pop up" near a chili burger joint, but the French fashion house has opened a boutique downtown on Great Jones Street, across from Cajun-flavored Great Jones Café. Running only through Fashion Week, the store features Stefano Pilati's Edition Unisex capsule collection for YSL –- a line of men's and women's casual luxury wear. Building on his recent Spring collection for men, Mr. Pilati uses the same sihouettes and incorporates new fabrics, sizing and details. The menswear is cut trim and the womenswear a bit looser, but all the pieces bear the relaxed chic look that the legendary brand was built on.
Versatility is part of the Unisex collection's appeal: one can mix separates like airy silk pants, washed cashmere sweaters and lightweight leather jackets with suede and zip detailing. The store carries YSL accessories from their mainline collection (iridescent patent leather Muse bags, classic flap messenger bags, sky high platform pumps) and they're all, of course, to die for.
Expecting the rarefied attitude that accompanies a high-end label, we were pleased to meet an engaging and helpful staff at the store. Though we didn't walk away with any $1,100 thin wool cardigans, it was an interesting look into both the brand's history and progressive design future. The pop-up packs up on February 21st and will travel to different fashion capitals worldwide, so do stop by to see this unique collection and share in the spirit of the great Saint Laurent.
