While LGBT rights have certainly come a long way, sometimes each step forward feels like two steps back (hello, California and Prop 8). Thus, Pride continues to be both a celebration and a protest. There is so much love and warmth within the festivities; to see support not just from LGBT and political rights groups, but also major corporations and religious organizations means so much. But every day is not like yesterday's celebrations, and it definitely doesn't happen every place. There is still so much bigotry, especially against LGBT families and the transgender community. Pride is a time to remember and to remind this city, this country and this planet, that (to borrow a slogan we saw several times yesterday) LGBT rights are human rights. And that we are here, we are queer, and we are here to stay. Get used to it.
