Red Bull Explores the History of NYC Graffiti

by Gary Pini
After producing last spring's incredible New York City edition of the Red Bull Music Academy, the world's largest energy drink company isn't taking a break. On Saturday, October 19, they're launching a month-long series of workshops, panels, film screenings and an exhibition devoted to American graffiti art and its influence on global culture. Curated by Mass Appeal magazine and Sacha Jenkins, "Write of Passage" will also include an immersive program for twelve young artists selected in partnership with NYC at-risk youth programs, as well as Pratt University and the School of Visual Arts. Many legendary graffiti artists and cultural influencers are participating including the gallerist Jonathan LeVine, Lee Quinones, PAPER senior editor Carlo McCormick, DAZE, Cost, EWOK and more. The kick-off event is this Wednesday, October 16, at the Museum of the City of New York and will feature a panel discussion, reception and book signing for City As Canvas, a new Rizzoli book featuring New York City graffiti from the collection of the late artist Martin Wong.
