Paul Ramírez Jonas' "Key to the City" Opens Today!

Once a municipal honor reserved only for visiting dignitaries, celebrities and local heroes, New York artist Paul Ramírez Jonas' new project "Key to the City" allows anyone to present a fellow citizen with a key that unlocks locations in all five boroughs. "Key to the City" opens tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. and, starting tomorrow, a kiosk in Times Square will be open daily for key retrieval. Part scavenger hunt, part re-introduction to overlooked city monuments, whether they be a cathedral or beloved neighborhood soda fountain, the project unlocks private rooms, boxes and displays in locations including the Whitney's coat check, a locker at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn and a room at Queens' Tortilleria Nixtamal. Anyone can give a key as many times as they like, but all keys must be be bestowed at the kiosk to "a friend, colleague, or loved one for a certain deed or trait," so get ready to feel feelings! Although organizers encourage visiting the kiosk, if you're given a key and would like to return the favor to someone else, keys can be copied at select locksmiths and hardware stores around the city.
