Scenes from SPIN MAGAZINE'S Rooftop Party with Danny Brown and Schoolboy Q
By Rebecca Smeyne
Goofy Detroit rapper Danny Brown and hip-hop artist Schoolboy Q both played Central Park's Summerstage Monday (with Childish Gambino), but last night, they played a much more intimate gig, a private party at dusk on SPIN Magazine's astroturf-clad rooftop in Tribeca. The weather cooperated perfectly, so it was a gorgeous setting to check them out (although at this point I can't think about Danny Brown without picturing him with wheatgrass hair). Brown scored the #1 spot on SPIN's list of 2011's Best Rap Albums (sorry, Jay-Z), with his "mix of avant-garde sophistication and dumbed-out simplicity" -- and last night, as he tends to do, he performed with his tongue waggling around most of the time. Also, the hilarious Danny Brown cartoon bandanas scattered around for the taking were major. Fun times.
