Scenes from Permanent Wave's Pussy Riot Benefit With Ad-Rock, Shady Hawkins, Heliotropes + More
By Rebecca Smeyne
Tuesday night was a Brooklyn classic. A fund and awareness-raiser for Russian political art-punks Pussy Riot -- who were recently sentenced to seven years in jail for allegedly (and incredibly photogenically) participating in a "punk prayer protest" -- offered a night of three upstart local bands (Tin Vulva, Shady Hawkins, and Heliotropes) plus none other than DJ Adam Horovitz, a.k.a. Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys.
To see creative expression suppressed so harshly pains our freedom-loving American souls, and it especially irks fellow musicians, art-punks and activists. The benefit was organized by a group of fierce young women called Permanent Wave, a burgeoning feminist movement, and hosted at Williamsburg's cozy art-filled DIY space Death By Audio. The air was muggy, inside and out. Ad-Rock DJ'd for over an hour to an extremely psyched, friendly and clammy crowd. His set was completely awesome (set list below), and seeing him smile and get an obvious kick out of playing in this intimate, b.s.-free space, for this crowd, for this cause, made it feel even sweeter. Plus, as everyone there knew, this Beastie Boy lost a close friend lately, which only heightened the emotion in the room. During his set, a bunch of the women from the evening's bands donned Pussy Riot-homage ski masks and danced around on stage.
Ad-Rock's wife, original riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna, also vocally promoted this benefit and its cause. Although she didn't make it out, there was still plenty of Le Tigre in the house. For his final song, Ad Rock played their song "Deceptacon," closing out the party with a roomful of people shouting along to the last repetitive bursts of "See You Later." It was perfect.
It was a few songs in before I thought to use Shazam for taking notes on the set list (brilliant!) and one song wasn't recognized, but here is 90% of the epic Ad-Rock Pussy Riot set list:
