The Maravilla Handball Court, the oldest handball court in East Los Angeles, recently fell on some disrepair, so the recently-formed Maravilla Historical Society has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 to put down as a deposit and ultimately buy the property. To raise some funds to save this beloved neighborhood spot, artist Carlin Wing has put together a one-night only exhibition and auction featuring works by Sam Durant, Harry Gamboa Jr., Liz Glynn, Tom Lawson and Elana Mann; a performance by Lucky Dragons; and some lovely photos of artist-designed handballs created by young kids in her workshop, Hitting Walls (v.XVIII): Making a Ball, conducted at the court this past weekend. Watch a video about the project here, and check out some of the amazing balls (amazeballs?) above.
