Calling out the awards ceremony for overlooking her refugee crisis-centric video for "Borders," M.I.A. wrote "This is a perfect example of 'allowed' voice vs excluded voices," later adding that she's " not here 4 EGO or Accolades." She also used this snub as an example of how global artists don't have the same platform as many major American pop artists, ending her tweets with an succinct "#fucktheVMAs we don't need their recognition !!."
