Marc Jacobs Makes a Case For the Neon Bowl Cut

The bowl cut has long been a polarizing style, but Marc Jacobs made a serious case the look last night during his Fall '18 presentation — a stunning '80s-tinged spectacle that bookended NYFW with gusto. Neon-hued human hair wigs were created by colorist Josh Wood, who told Vogue it sometimes took six rounds of dyeing to achieve the final vibrant shade. Alongside hairstylist Guido Palau, Jacobs' beauty team successfully refreshed Vidal Sassoon-style geometric hair for a modern generation.

Beyond models' sleek mushroom technicolor cuts, the collection itself was a direct reference to '80s haute couture, looking to industry icons like Mugler and Saint Laurent for inspiration. Jacobs' silhouettes were all greatly exaggerated, with monstrous shoulders, big bow belts and oversized trousers. It was all a beautifully dramatic blur of Dynasty, working girl and prom nostalgia, while still finding glamorous sophistication in a range of cartoony shapes.
