Here's a Clip of 17-Year-Old David Bowie Defending "Long-Haired Men"

by Abby Schreiber

To help you ease back into the week, here's a clip of a 17-year-old David Bowie defending "long-haired men" in a TV interview. This little nugget has been floating around the web for some time now but hasn't been widely watched -- or written about -- until recently when culture and media aggregate, Open Culture, featured it a few days ago. In the video, we see an anchorman introduce Bowie as "Davey Jones" before cutting to a clip of the babyfaced icon discussing his formation of the 'The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men." With impressively chill vibes, Bowie says things like, "I think we're all fairly tolerant but for the last two years we've heard comments like 'Darling!' and 'Can I carry your handbag?' thrown at us and things just had to stop now" and "I think we all like long hair and we don't see why other people should persecute us because of this."

Well said, Davey, well said.
