Chloe Sevigny, Mx Justin Vivian Bond + More Are Participating In a Public Reading In Support of Pussy Riot

This Thursday, on the eve of the trial verdict for imprisoned Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot, Chloë Sevigny, Mx Justin Vivian Bond, poet Eileen Myles, performance artist Karen Finley and Le Tigre's Johanna Fateman (also of MEN), will give a public reading of the courageous court room statements given by the three remaining imprisoned band members, Katja Samutsevich, Nadia Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyekhina. A press release also notes that prison letters and written observations from court room attendees about the terrifying trial will also be part of the program.

The reading, which has been organized by Fateman's bandmate JD Samson, is free and open to the public and will be held inside Liberty Hall at Ace Hotel New York, starting at 7:30 p.m. It follows a slew of similar events organized this summer by Pussy Riot supporters throughout the world (including a benefit hosted by Permanent Wave back in June), all of which have aimed to show solidarity towards the imprisoned band, and to bring issues of free speech and activism to the fore, particularly as they are called into question by the actions of the Russian government and the unfolding of this absurd case, which has mostly resembled a witch trial. Fateman and Samson's Le Tigre bandmate, Kathleen Hanna, started blogging about Pussy Riot back in March, and there's been a flurry of support for the band in recent weeks from celebrities including Madonna, Danny Devito and Bjork.

For those unable to attend the reading on Thursday, a march and rally will be held on Friday following the reading of the verdict (see more info HERE).
