Writer Kathy Charles' debut novel John Belushi Is Dead tells the tale of two weird teenagers in Hollywood -- pink-haired Hilda and loner Benji -- who are obsessed with the deaths of the famous and infamous, like James Dean and Sharon Tate. Hilda and Benji ditch schoolwork to scour crime scenes and collect mementos of celebrity deaths. They then meet Hank, an old, reclusive tenant of a run-down building in Echo Park. Throw in a suicide wherein a silent movie star killed himself  by stabbing his body with scissors and Hank's dark secrets and things get creepy fast. Charles, who lives between L.A. and Melbourne, Australia, with her husband Evan does not have pink hair and says she "worships at the church of pop culture."
