A Girl Named Fred
By Kim Hastreiter
My friend Angela, who is one-third of the super talented Threeasfour team, stopped by the office yesterday afternoon with a girl named Fred in tow. Turns out Fred Butler is from London, was one of Threeasfour's very first interns and is now making her very first line of amazing, super-colorful, imaginative accessories. Pictured above is Angela (right) and Fred (left) looking quite cute (no?) especially for 2 p.m. on a Monday afternoon. Fred's necklaces and sequinned jewels (see photos) are not yet available in NYC but after more people get a look at it you can bet it won't be long!

About Last Night... PAPER's Annual Beautiful People Party at Hiro Ballroom
By Caroline Torem Craig

Apparently, New York City ranks fourth in the world in terms of population density, and it felt as if the whole city was crowded together at PAPER’s Beautiful People party held at the Hiro Ballroom last night! Californian crooner and BP cover girl Joanna Newsom performed for the throngs of rabid fans. All in all, it was a great, young, crowded, fun, laid-back party, but then all of a sudden the pressure was ON when Bjork, notoriously anti-photographer, arrived. It was my mission to document her iconic presence at our party! And I fought like a Nimiean lion to do it. I got four frames -- pop, pop, pop, pop -- just like the champagne served that evening, courtesy of Nicolas Feuillatte. The icing on the cake? H&M provide a PAPER + H&M T-shirt for all guests which read “I am a beautiful person.”

Party people; Bjork!

Rei Kawakubo Does H&M!
By Kim Hastreiter
PAPER threw its 11th annual Beautiful People Party last night at Hiro and it was really fun. All the cute kids from the issue were in attendence and the adorable Joanna Newsom (our cover girl) hung out with us for a while before she performed. The glamourous Threeasfour's Adi, Angela and Gabi sat with me and their old friend Bjork joined us. (turns out she's friends and fan of Newsom also...) I love Bjork. She came with her sig other Matthew Barney who looked completely uncomfortable and disappeared soon after arriving.
Meanwhile, the event this year was sponsored by H&M and we heard from all the H&M kids who were at the party that they'd be announcing a new guest designer and that they were not allowed to tell us who it was!!! Of course we tried to drag it out of them with booze, cajoling and flirting but they wouldn't give and said that they were announcing their new designer today so we'd have to wait. We then all spent the evening putting bets on who it would be. We guessed Burberry, Paul Smith (I think this would be amazing) and Yohji Yamamoto and I SWEAR I thought to myself Rei Kawakubo, but dismissed the idea as being too outrageous. Well I woke up to an email press release confirming my greatest hope: YES! Rei Kawakubo will collaborate on a line of clothes this fall with the Swedish Giant. And I cant wait to see what she does and buy every piece. I wonder how looks like these will translate into 39 dollar pieces. CANT WAIT!

Threeasfour Wins the Day!
By Kim Hastreiter

Threeasfour really came through today showing a collection that proved what I've been screaming about for the past ten years. That they are among a tiny handful of GREAT designers that we have showing here in America. The collection was supreme, chic, beautifully crafted and completely innovative, from the way they experimented with tailoring (their jackets were pieced together in ways I haven't seen done before) to their super creative draping and wrapping. I adored the huge elephant pantyskirts (looked like huge pants in front but wrap skirts from the back) and their aprons and harnesses they put over coats and jackets that were wonderful. I also loved that you could really see all three of their sensibilities wrapped up in the clothes... If you want to see the whole show go to style.com where they are touting it on their home page.

It's Gonna Be an Eclectic Fashion Week: From Betsey Johnson to Band of Outsiders to Barack Obama!
By Kim Hastreiter
So I've been taking my vitamins because starting Thursday the fashion shit hits the fan. And all in the middle of Super Tuesday madness. This Thursday night I am actually co- hosting a Barack Obama benefit at the home of Sarah Flicker (of Citizens Band) and her filmmaker husband Jesse Peretz. At the same time, I'm on deadline for our huge upcoming March issue which has some amazing fashion in it this time around (not to mention sick photos of Lindsay Lohan taken by Jeremy Scott!)
But back to fashion schmashion. There's a lot of stuff that I am looking forward to. In addition to the old standbys, I think this year I am going to check out the shows of all these young companies who have names that I keep confusing with each other so I can remember who's who. I'm talking about labels like the Band of Outsiders and Obedient Sons and Daughters... (both cool lines that I like a lot.)
I look forward this Friday to dropping into see the work of more fun shows like Sue Stemp, Erin Fetherson, Katy Rodriguez, and Elise Overland (who won the Ecco Domani award this year). All these girls are hot and all their shows are on Friday night!
Then of course I CAN'T wait to see ThreeasFour on Saturday and Alex Wang. Sunday I'm looking forward to seeing what the ex-Trovata kids will be doing at Shipley and Halmos.
On Monday, Betsey Johnson is celebrating her 30th year in biz so I want to go to her show to applaud her for her legendary status. She is somethin' else -- still doing cartwheels down the runway instead of a bow at the age of sixty-something! (see photo above) I cant wait to see what Ben Cho will do and of course on Tuesday I'm gagging to see the Rodarte show! But not till after I've voted in the primary. Remember New York is NOT winner-take-all so VOTE VOTE VOTE.
Wednesday I cant wait to see what Isaac Mizrahi has on show because whatever Isaac does I always seem to love! Our old friend Susan Ciancolo is even showing on Thursday evening which should be interesting...
Then Friday will be two shows that I live for: 1) Sean John (YAY) and 2) Marc Jacobs (I love that he is ending Fashion Week this time around. Great idea!)
Of course all that is just the tip of the iceberg because of course I'll drop in on many more shows.

Threeasfour Designs for the GAP!
By Kim Hastreiter

Well the cat got out of the bag in the blogosphere yesterday that our favorite design team Threeasfour will be designing a piece or two for the GAP. I think it'll come out in March and word is that it'll be a super cool collectible piece (or more) and I don't doubt it. This is not the first time Threeasfour has designed for a big manufacturer. For a few seasons they had a gig consulting for their friends Kate and Andy Spade, lending a hand with some of the apparel collection design. And in the Kate Spade look books (especially the last one they did before they sold their company) I actually noticed a subtle Threeasfour signature on some of the shirts. Check out this shirt with asymmetrical appliqué flowers (pictured below) from Spade's collection for spring. I wonder if these will look similar to their GAP colabs. Either way, I cant wait to see the items they design. I'm sure they'll sell out fast!

CFDA/VOGUE Awards Do it Again
By Kim Hastreiter

My partner David Hershkovits always says that we live in a parallel universe here in the world of PAPER. When everyone in the fashion world is shopping at Seventh on Sale, PAPER is opening a cuckoo 24-hour store in Los Angeles. When we are hailing someone as a fashion genius, the mainstream fashion organizations of our country are ignoring them.
Well I really felt that way big time this morning when I found out last night that the groundbreaking, dedicated fashion team of Threeasfour had not won the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Awards. And I was SO POSITIVE that they would win this -- hands down. To me this was a no-brainer. And hey, not only did they not win (which they should have) but they did not even place in the top three. This is really upsetting to me because not only were they the most innovative creative team to be nominated in a long time, but they are also so perfectly poised to go to the next step with a wonderful business team of people surrounding them ready to go. How can the CFDA/Vogue call it a fashion award when they constantly refuse to recognize the fashion innovators of America? (Or at least until they after they are dead.)
I love Rogan (the winner of last night's $200,000 award) and the jeans he designs, but is he really a fashion designer??? Is Rogan really more innovative when it comes to fashion than Threeasfour? Was the Trovata team (who won a few years ago) really more innovative as designers than Isabel Toledo (who was also ignored)?? I mean WHAT is wrong with this picture???? I think that going forward, the most true-blue innovative FASHION designers need to think hard before putting themselves through this grueling process in the future. The odds are great that they will never make the cut because this competition has more to do with business and much less to do with the magic of and passion for great fashion.
Bummer.

About Last Night... The Annual Princess Grace Awards Gala and the Rx Art Ball
By Caroline Torem Craig

Last night was so uptown/downtown PAPER is still having Cultural Sushi shock! We started the evening by covering the Annual Princess Grace Awards Gala at Sotheby’s at 71st and York and trolleyed (a horse and buggy would have been faster) down to Phillips de Pury & Company on extreme W. 15th St. for the Rx Art Ball.

Security was tight at Sotheby’s and my BFF took offense when, after he was told we were going to be able to photograph Princess Caroline’s two handsome sons, the PR people rushed them right by us. He took matters into his own hands by breaking loose from the barriers to pop off one shot. Security came rushing up to him to eject him immediately even though he protested that the Grimaldis were uncooperative and the publicists were liar's! This was one hot red carpet and such a strange mix of guest celebrities: Buzz Aldrin, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Sir Roger Moore, Carolyn Murphy and George Lucas. Now, c'mon, who could have put that mix together?!??

Fashion Big Names Gather for the Barneys Alber Elbaz Party
By Mickey Boardman

Last night was the gorgeous party that Barneys' Howard Socol and Iman held for Lanvin's adorable Alber Elbaz at the Bowery Hotel. Poor Mr. Mickey had to rush over at intermission from the Wooster Group's Hamlet, now playing at the Public Theater. MM j'adores Alber and couldn't miss him. The party was super glamorous and here's a line up of Fashion Ladies that'll prove it. When MM went to snap the picture of Victoria Bartlett, Daryl Kerrigan, Adi & Ange from Threeasfour and Barneys' Julie Gilhart, who should walk by and interrupt the photo but Narciso Rodriguez! It was a fashion clusterfuck people!
Check out the final photo after the jump!

Baby Lynnie Loves Baby Phat!
By Mickey Boardman

We were surprised to hear that our Fashion Week BFF "Baby" Lynn Yaeger LOVED the Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons fashion show. Mr. Mickey is always up in the mix at Baby Phat but there are those that might say the "urban" crowd doesn't fit in during Fashion Week. Yaeger, a fashion icon who writes for the Village Voice, Vogue, Travel & Leisure and the NY Times Magazine, gave us her opinion:
Mr. Mickey: Why did you love the Baby Phat show?
Lynn Yaeger: Because it was young and fun and the clothes were so affordable and the gorgeous models were, for once, not all white people.
MM: Have you been to a Baby Phat show before?
LY: I think once a long time ago but then I got scared off by the chaotic door scene.
MM: What other shows did you love during Fashion Week?
LY: Rodarte! ThreeAsFour! Marc when it FINALLY started!
MM: Do you think Baby Phat has a place in NY Fashion Week?
LY: Of course! Why not?

Fashion Week Mouth Off: ThreeAsFour After All These Years
By Carol Lee

I've been loving ThreeAsFour as long as I've lived in New York and worked at PAPER (need I say more?). They have since become good friends of mine, but I have never owned any of their pieces. The thing is I never thought of myself as an AsFour girl, style-wise. But when I saw this rope belt with all of Asfour bells and whistles I thought to myself, "I really want that." Then this pink petal blouse and subtle metallic lavender hot pant number traipsed down the runway and I made another mental note to self. The blouse is chic and gorgeous, in another word -- special. And the hot pants? Well, they're just super-sexy and the color is very unusual!!
P.S. So cool that that they've been nominated for the Vogue CFDA Fashion Fund Award. They deserve it 1000 percent!!

ThreeAsfour & Rodarte: Gorgeous!
By Kim Hastreiter

Two shows made us really happy yesterday even in the midst of all the insanity.
Rodarte showed a gorgeous gorgeous collection as did Threeasfour. I really think both of these crews are reaching their stride and are really doing great work. Rodarte's clothes were breathtaking and the Mulleavy sisters are definitely maturing in their craft.
Threeasfour's show was not only inventive architecturally with amazing new seaming experimentations for their new take on tailored suits and jackets, but their work is SO CHIC! I think Gabi from Threeasfour is like the alchemist/scientist who figures out all the construction blueprints, but it is Adi and Angela who add the CHIC chic style to it all.
What a great combination. I'm so happy for them. They deserve to win the Vogue prize. And Rodarte should have won last time around for sure. Unfortunately those contests like the CFDA/Vogue awards get way too distracted by business issues and trendiness issues often neglecting to look hard at the work and judge by creativity, design and merit. I'll cross my fingers for them because Threeasfour has struggled for way too long and deserve to get some cash infusion into what they do. If they do this with nothing, imagine what they can achieve with some capital! (I swiped the photos of the Mulleavys and Threeasfour from style.com.)

The Bunny Reports on Fashion Week: An Interview with Jewelry Designer Sasha Primak
By Jordan Kinney
So, as was made evident with my ode to Korean-manufactured faux-designer costume jewelry, I'm a sucker for all things accessorizing. Really, just pile a bunch of charm bracelets on my wrist and throw a few gold chains and crucifixes around my neck (so goth! so Mary-Kate!) and I'm totally happy. Given such, it was quite opportune that just the other day I was able to have a quick convo with the amazing jewelry designer (my new idol) Sasha Primak.
For Fashion Week this season, he outfitted all the looks at the Erin Fetherston show with his jewelry. Fetherston -- a fresh face in this nasty little world called fashion (how I love it!) -- is known for her whimsical, feminine flare. Primak, on the other hand, having spent some 30-odd years in the industry, is better established for his chic, old school elegance and refined attention to detail. (For real, though, his stuff is way sexy -- check it out at www.sashaprimak.com). Though Fetherston is no virgin to the ever-popular design partnership universe -- her super-cute Target collection hits stores this fall -- I was a trife surprised by the collab, but Primak swears that looking to what's next always invites the greatest inspiration for his own design. "We want to keep coming up with something fresh, something beautiful," says Primak, who initially approached Fetherston about a collaboration. "We wanted Erin because she's young and up and coming and successful."

Threeasfour Nominated for CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award
By Kim Hastreiter
So, my friends Threeasfour made it to the top ten designers competing for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award. These guys deserve to win for sure, but of course, coming from me, that's a jinx because everyone that I ever think should win never wins. I guess I just don't have a Vogue-type head. TAF are completely original, their work is beautifully crafted and they have proven that they are serious about what they are doing (they have been at this for many years now). Talk about an arty party. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they explain their work to the judge table. Hopefully they wont scare the judges! A couple of other good designers made the top ten list... Rogan and Erin Fetherston who I also think are great.. I hope Threeasfour gets the money because they really need this shot in the arm...plus they've got the goods.

More Fun at the Colette Luncheon and Pink Martini Concert!
By Kim Hastreiter
WOW I'm exhausted today. Wednesday was a wild one. First we hosted a luncheon at Indochine celebrating the tenth birthday of our fave shop in Paris, Colette. Sarah Lerfel and her mom (and shop namesake) Colette hopped over to New York for the occasion and it was SUCH a fun crowd. It was a great mix of artists, DJs, designers (young cool ones mostly), socialites and hipsters who all respect Sarah's eye and vision and wanted to come celebrate her. We had a great table of friends of Sarah -- many of whom I also knew.
Brian Kaws (the artist, see his photo below) was across sitting next to Supreme's James Jebbia who just became a dad! To my left was Weiden and Kennedy guru John Jay, and to my right was fabulous designer Thomas Brown, who I introduced to my Portland friend Thomas Lauderdale, who was playing at Carnegie Hall that night with his group Pink Martini (that's a whole other story to come!). I think Brown should dress all the Pink Martini guys actually.
