Fashion Heads Up: MSG Does a Body Good

By Marya Spence

msg

Mami Suzuki is a culturally savvy, sprite little cookie of a clothing designer with a lot of talent up her sleeve. You'll want to know her name, because she's going to be big. Her NoLIta boutique MSG (which opened two weeks ago) is currently carrying her moderately priced, one-of-a-kind pieces which have graced both the shoulders of the Princess of Thailand and, yes, a regal few of us at PAPERMAG.

Originally from Tokyo, Mami is in New York on a mission to bring her Japanese, Southeast Asian, ‘70s disco and function-inspired pieces to the hub of American fashion. With its multiple influences, her style is incredibly unique -- but nothing in the store is beyond wearable. She has artfully structured wool suits and feminine chiffon blouses alongside a sparkling, champagne-hued, three-tiered dress -- a swingy disco confection I didn't want to take off. Then there's also the "Imelda" dress, named for the former Filipino First Lady, Imelda Romualdez Marcos. It's a platinum crepe, knee-length dress with detachable bouffant sleeves. Indeed, there's an intoxicating mix in this dress: it makes me feel equal parts delicate butterfly and powerful dictator. I feel suddenly pretty, yet secretly un-crushable.

Porn Stars Hit Department Stores!!!

By Mickey Boardman

erik rhodes

You loyal readers of MMBlog know that Mr. Mickey is a big fan of Porn King Erik Rhodes. Well MM was... um... doing research, yes research, at a charming blog called QueerMeNow and stumbled across a tidbit about Erik and his fellow adult film star Ben Andrew appearing in an ad for the discount retailer Loehmann's. Here's the shot, as it appears in-store, with Erik on the left and Ben on the right. How sexy the boys look as male secretaries. MM is going to need to pop by Loehmann's and check things out!!!

Jack Spade Hardhats

By Kim Hastreiter

Jack-Spade2.JPG

Jack Spade, the groovy younger brother to the Kate Spade brand (run by Andy, Kate's husband!) is so hilarious sometimes. Not only does Jack Spade sell regular guy accessories, but they produce movies made by some of my favorite artists (read: Neistat Brothers) and publish really fun books. Check out this fun show featuring vintage motorcycle helmets that opened this week at the Jack Spade shop in SoHo (56 Greene Street). To complete the vibe, there's also photo exhibit by Matt Salacuse called "Weenie Bite," which documents a retarded contest held at motorcycle rallies where people riding bikes attempt to take a bite of a suspended hot dog. Biggest bite of hot dog wins, of course. Ya gotta love 'em.
