Santogold Brings the Heat in Central Park
By Sean Keenan

It was amazing to see so many people out in Central Park on such a brutally hot day, one of the hottest of the year for sure. But the place was packed and Santogold certainly did not disappoint. Reppin’ Bed-Stuy, this hip-hop/reggae diva hit the stage and refueled a worn-out crowd with a bolt of energy and charisma. It was a big sweaty feel good pow-wow when she got all arms swaying in the air. To warm up the crowd, as if they needed it in this heat, Diplo and A-Trak spun with Kid Cudi, Blaqstarr and Mz Streamz supporting on the mic. Their dance crew brought some serious New York playground vibes to the stage. I half expected them to bring out a jump rope and chant in unison. A-Trak showed off his technical skills, supplied with two decks and a warehouse of records. This guy is a born DJ, redefining what a turntable can do. Having won DMC’s World DJ Championship in 1997 at only age 15, he’s gone on to DJ for Kanye West, and make a pretty serious career behind the DJ booth. But Diplo knew how to work the crowd with just the right recipe of jams. This maverick Philly-based DJ helped produce M.I.A’s latest album, Kala, and when he dropped in "Paper Planes" on the set, the crowd went nutz! We’re only halfway through the summer, and there’s much more to come, but SummerStage is going to have a hard time topping this one.

Eight Items or Less: Bobby Tisdale's a Model, 7-11 Gives Away Free Slurpees & James Frey and Terry Richardson Talk at the Strand
By Alexis Swerdloff

1. We were just browsing through Built By Wendy's online shop, when we were like, "is that... could it be... is it??" and then were like, "it is! it's Bobby Tisdale!" Bobby Tisdale is one of our favorite stand-up comics (if you've never seen him do his thing, go see him!), and has joined the ranks of former BBW models Robin Tunney and David Cross. He actually looks kind of dashing!
2. Remember how Converse commissioned Pharrell, Julian Casablancas and Santogold to collaborate on a song called "My Drive Thru" and it was pretty awesome? Well the whole thing just got a little awesomer with the release of this animated music video. Check it out -- it's streaming at converse.com.
3. Exciting news: This Friday, 7-Eleven stores are celebrating their 81st birthday by giving customers a free Slurpee. On the same day, they'll be introducing the first Slurpee energy drink, Black Ice. Apparently, the drink is black, which is kind of creepy.
4. According to NME.com, Albert Hammond Jr. went on the record saying that The Strokes are "definitely figuring out something to do for 2009."
5. On July 16 at 7 p.m., James Frey and Terry Richardson will be chatting with John McWhinnie at The Strand about their new collab, Wives, Wheels, Weapons. The book takes three stories from Frey's recently released (and much praised) Bright Shiny Morning and pairs them with photographs by Terry Richardson.

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.
Last night, to celebrate Visionaire's 54 Sport (their first "wearable" publication) and Lacoste's 75th anniversary, a boat-load of fabulous fashion types chugged along the Seine as Lady Bunny, Christophe Lemaire, Spank Rock and the one and only Santogold provided the soundtrack. Here are some photos, snapped by JD Ferguson.

Eight Items or Less: Clapping Guidelines, Natalie Imbruglia's Mob Ties and Converse Collabs
By Gary Pini

1. Clap on. Clap off. The organizers of the Beijing Olympics have issued official guidelines for clapping at the games. The four-step method is designed to "help spectators cheer in a smooth and civilized manner." There will be "unified training" to promote the clapping method for the 800,000 students who are receiving free tickets for the event. (via Financial Times)
2. Police in Spokane, Washington, caught a teenager counterfeiting money in the men's room of a downtown mall on Friday. Using the electricity in the bathroom, the boy was printing $10 bills with a color copier. (via KREM TV)
3. PR-inside.com claims that Columbo crime family associate and ex-con Chris Paciello is dating Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia after the pair were introduced to each other by Madonna.
4. Stereogum calls the Strokes/Santogold/Pharrell collaboration "My Drive Thru" a "perfectly balanced summertime pop cocktail." A video for the song, created for a Converse ad campaign, is coming soon. Listen here.

5. If you're worried about a break-in while you're on summer vacation, you can get a fake TV for only $39 that uses LED bulbs to mimic the flashing lights and colors of a real TV.
6. Six people were arrested in New York over the weekend during the Puerto Rican Day Parade for selling "lollipops and Gummi Bear-type candy" containing marijuana.

Eight Items or Less: The Cool Kids are Hot, Leona Lewis Blows Monkeys out of the water & American Apparel goes vintage?
By By Gary Pini

1. Several of our fave new bands have been selected by Rolling Stone magazine for their annual list of artists to watch in 2008. PAPER bloggers The Cool Kids, Santogold, Kate Nash and MGMT were all featured in the top ten. We were so impressed that we're going to give a listen to the other six. We also just heard that Nash's album will finally be released in the US this January.
2. Paul Oakenfold will appear at New York club Pacha (618 West 46) on Thanksgiving. The popular British DJ and remixer was embarrassed recently when he showed up for a gig in the student union of the University of Newcastle only to discover that only 52 people had purchased tickets. (via filter27)
3. The second annual "Icons" issue of Shepard Fairey's Swindle magazine includes an article on PAPER founders-editors-publishers Kim Hastreiter and David Hershkovits.
4. Recording artist Leona Lewis just became the biggest selling debut artist in UK history (375,000 copies in one week), beating previous record holder the Arctic Monkeys' 2006 debut.
5. Is American Apparel going to open a "vintage" clothing store in L.A.? (via Team Junk!)
6. To celebrate the grand opening of the New Museum (235 Bowery) next weekend, Target is sponsoring 30 free hours of admission starting at noon Saturday, December 1. Tickets are still required and are available at newmuseum.org.
