Michael Stipe Is All Arsty Fartsy!!
By Mickey Boardman

Last night rock star Michael Stipe had a show of his sculpture at the Rogan store on Bowery. The full title of the evening was Rogan v Stipe and it was a hot hootenanny! We loved the sculpture and Michael let us take a little radio shaped box he'd made! It was a super cute crowd including the rock, fashion and hipster worlds. Chris Martin, Mike D, Barneys Julie Gilhart, Terrence Koh, Jack Pierson, Andrew Saffir & Daniel Benedict, Sean McPherson......
Sorry MM's camera burnt out after only one shot! That's professionalism. Michael Stipe is pictured above with Jack Pierson.

Shop of the Week: Rogan
By Rebecca Prusinowski
There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.
Over eight years ago, at the dimly lit corner of Bowery and Bond, I stood waiting outside the Bouwerie Lane Theater for King Edward and Queen Anne. The Cocteau Repertory had just staged another brazen performance of Bertolt Brecht’s tragic play Edward II inside, and a looming school assignment required a few quick questions with the actors. The nighttime quiet was unsettling and there were more rats than people on Bond’s uneven cobblestone street. Their shadows appeared eerily large against the cast iron façade of the Theater. After more waiting and a drug deal scuffle down the block, I split.
Aaaand scene.
Today that corner is bustling with activity and pedestrian traffic. No word on when Edward and Anne left the building, but there’s currently a new star at the Bouwerie Lane Theater: Rogan. On the tails of his CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award and smashing Target collaboration, the designer Rogan Gregory has opened his second New York store inside the landmark building. And it is dramatic. Painted entirely black with empty walls and a single suspended lighting-fixture made of spotlights that descend like tentacles from the rafters high above, the space is a deliberate homage to its former life as a theater. The lighting and mirrored mezzanine amplify the raw backstage design; clothing is indeterminately highlighted or shadowed mysteriously, and rainbow prisms cast over a white pleated neck blouse made it look downright ethereal.
Lined with both men’s and women’s wear, one long clothing rack stretches along the right side of the store with two smaller segments extending perpendicularly. Though the color palette of the clothing is mostly limited to black, white and gray, the patterns, cuts and silk-screened slogans are all quite vivid. Short-shorts, cardigans, blouses and dresses range from $60-400 for the ladies, and the “slim dazzle” and “caldwell rosen” skinny jeans are showstoppers. For the men, Rogan has sweatshirts, tees, shorts, buttondowns and jeans of assorted fabrics and stitching. There are also a handful of accessories, such as hats, ties, and totes, but emphasis is on solid wardrobe pieces.
To both the store’s design and its forward-thinking eco-friendly collections therein, we applaud you Rogan… Bravo!

About Last Night... The Rogan for Target Private Shopping Party at Barneys
By Alexis Swerdloff

Last night I headed uptown to Barneys for a private Rogan for Target shopping event (the collection is unveiled to the public today.) It was madness as fashion girls (we spotted Jessica Szohr from Gossip Girl and Angela from Project Runway amid a slew of editors and stylists) clawed their way through he racks, grabbing up all the size smalls leaving many a sad L and XL for the disappointed latecomers. I purchased two items, a simple, summery white and gray blouse and this here leopard print dress (which I wasn’t going to get -- not so much my style -- until one girl in the dressing room insisted I buy it). I later saw Julie Gilhart sporting the number while chatting with Simon Doonan and Rogan Gregory and felt better about my purchase. I have to say, I had my initial doubts about the collection, but up close and in person, I think this is one of the best Target designer collabs yet!

Eight Items or Less: No Age the Dopeness, Shepard Fairey Not Blind and Hudson Terrace Ready to Go
By Gary Pini

1. In case you missed both of their New York shows this week, you can catch the brilliant L.A. art/punk duo No Age at the South Street Seaport on July 11. And it's free! "They thrill by purposeful happenstance." - New York Times
2. Shepard Fairey is not going blind. The artist, who is diabetic, has had multiple surgeries to repair damaged blood vessels in both eyes and says he's now "all good." (via animalnewyork.com)
3. The Red Hook IKEA opens June 18.
4. Hudson Terrace, the $3 million nightclub that was set to open last fall, is apparently ready to go. Sean McGarr and Michael Sinensky's 4,000 sq. ft. space at 621 W. 46th St. is previewing tonight. We heard last night that another long awaited club, Santa's Party House, is opening for a very private party this week.
5. Seven Nevada high school students shot a documentary about New York rockers Sonic Youth and it's screening at the 10th CineVegas Film Festival in June. (via dailyswarm.com)
6. We love the new Rogan store at 330 Bowery. It's in the old Bouwerie Lane Theater where they have uncovered all the windows on the south side, painted everything black and hung a lighting grid with 20 pin-spots from the center of the ceiling. They wanted to mirror all the windows, but couldn't because the building is landmarked.

Eight Items or Less: Pink Floyd's Pig Was Found, Sebastian Horsley Is Allowed in U.S. and Rogan for Target Heads to Barneys
By Gary Pini

1. Pink Floyd's pig was found (deflated) in the California desert. The band's famous inflatable stage prop accidentally drifted away during their Coachella performance over the weekend. A La Quinta resident found a "big pile of shredded plastic" in his driveway early Monday morning and will receive a $10,000 reward from the festivals organizers. (via Yahoo)
2. British author/artist Sebastian Horsley is set to appear tonight and Saturday at two PEN World Voices events in New York City. Horsley was denied entry into the U.S. in March for "moral turpitude." UPDATE: We have received word from PEN that "Mr. Horsley was unable to attend this year and will not be appearing."
3. Spank Rock "experienced a sudden ailment" and was unable to perform at Coachella. After emergency surgery, he remains hospitalized in California and won't be appearing at Studio B on Friday.
4. Target is introducing a line of eco-friendly clothing designed by Rogan Gregory but the line will first be available only at Barneys New York. (Photo at right from the collection)
5. Twelve bottles of cream soda personalized with your photo for $29.99 (+ shipping) available here. (via WSJ)
6. Last year NOKIA sold 146 million cell phones.

Barneys' "Future Fashion" Brought Out The Big Guns, All in the Name of Sustainability.
By Mickey Boardman

Barneys' Julie Gilhart brought out all the big name designers for their Future Fashion show, which highlighted fashion made with sustainable materials. From Marni to Versace, Rodarte to Rogan, Isabel Toledo to Diane von Furstenberg, all worn by a cavalcade of the best girls (styled by Brana Wolf, hair by Recine, makeup by Dick Page), it was a tour de force!

CFDA/VOGUE Awards Do it Again
By Kim Hastreiter

My partner David Hershkovits always says that we live in a parallel universe here in the world of PAPER. When everyone in the fashion world is shopping at Seventh on Sale, PAPER is opening a cuckoo 24-hour store in Los Angeles. When we are hailing someone as a fashion genius, the mainstream fashion organizations of our country are ignoring them.
Well I really felt that way big time this morning when I found out last night that the groundbreaking, dedicated fashion team of Threeasfour had not won the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Awards. And I was SO POSITIVE that they would win this -- hands down. To me this was a no-brainer. And hey, not only did they not win (which they should have) but they did not even place in the top three. This is really upsetting to me because not only were they the most innovative creative team to be nominated in a long time, but they are also so perfectly poised to go to the next step with a wonderful business team of people surrounding them ready to go. How can the CFDA/Vogue call it a fashion award when they constantly refuse to recognize the fashion innovators of America? (Or at least until they after they are dead.)
I love Rogan (the winner of last night's $200,000 award) and the jeans he designs, but is he really a fashion designer??? Is Rogan really more innovative when it comes to fashion than Threeasfour? Was the Trovata team (who won a few years ago) really more innovative as designers than Isabel Toledo (who was also ignored)?? I mean WHAT is wrong with this picture???? I think that going forward, the most true-blue innovative FASHION designers need to think hard before putting themselves through this grueling process in the future. The odds are great that they will never make the cut because this competition has more to do with business and much less to do with the magic of and passion for great fashion.
Bummer.

Threeasfour Nominated for CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award
By Kim Hastreiter
So, my friends Threeasfour made it to the top ten designers competing for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award. These guys deserve to win for sure, but of course, coming from me, that's a jinx because everyone that I ever think should win never wins. I guess I just don't have a Vogue-type head. TAF are completely original, their work is beautifully crafted and they have proven that they are serious about what they are doing (they have been at this for many years now). Talk about an arty party. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they explain their work to the judge table. Hopefully they wont scare the judges! A couple of other good designers made the top ten list... Rogan and Erin Fetherston who I also think are great.. I hope Threeasfour gets the money because they really need this shot in the arm...plus they've got the goods.
