Broadway Soundtrack of the Week: Cabaret (1998 revival)
By Whitney Spaner

This week I've been listening to the soundtrack of 1998 revival of Cabaret with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson. It's amazing! For those of you who don't know Cabaret, the music was composed by Kander and Eb, and it's about the goings on of a Weimar era German nightclub as the Nazs came to power. The Roundabout revival at Studio 54 which opened in 1998 and closed in 2004 had three new songs from Cabaret the movie: "Mein Herr" (my personal favorite), "Maybe this Time," the act one finale, and "I Don't Care Much," a ballad sung by the Master of Ceremonies (Cumming) in the second Act.
I live vicariously through this CD because unfortunately I got an internship at Roundabout just in time to get free tickets to see Jon Secada in the Emcee role! The horror! I did get to see Cumming in the 2006 revival of The Three Penny Opera but it didn't make up for missing him in his Tony Award winning role.
My favorite tracks are: "Money" (Originally "The Money Song"), "Mein Herr," "Don't Tell Mama," and "If You Could See Her," a metephorical song about loving an outcast in which the emcee sings to a gorilla, and then at the end he whispers "If you could see her through my eyes/She wouldn't look Jewish at all." It sends chills up my spine everytime! Visit Amazon.com to pick up a copy and maybe they'll swing you a deal if you also buy the original with Joel Grey in the lead role!
