Meanwhile in LA... Ports 1961 Opens a Boutique on Melrose Place

By Mickey Boardman

Debi Mazar & Tia Cibani

We've been so busy in the Naked City we sometimes forget things go on other places (okay that's a lie, we're constantly traveling to other cities for shindigs and fashion shows!). Anyhoo, one of our favorite labels Ports 1961 just opened a boutique in LA on Melrose Place and the cuties came out to celebrate. Here's actress Debi Mazar with Ports' creative director Tia Cibani. New Yorkers won't have to wait long as Ports has a store coming to the Meat Packing District.

More cuties after the jump.

Afternoon Style in an L.A. Supermarket

By Kim Hastreiter

afternon style

Look what my friend Jeff Snyder just emailed me! He saw this woman dressed to the nines yesterday afternoon perusing the cheese section at Gelson's Market on Franklin and Bronson. He followed her, snapping photos with his cellphone. Good look for the supermarket, no???? God, I love L.A. for its fashion inspiration....

He opened the shop just a few weeks ago with a downtown storefront in L.A.'s Chinatown. Here's the scoop!

What: Brian Lichtenberg pop-up store!

The Life and Times of Fabian Basabe: "I Will Never Be the Man to Turn Down a Password Party!"

By Fabian Basabe

fabian basabe

Hello PAPER Readers! Sorry for the long silence... or should I say, you are welcome for the long silence? Here is your favorite... how do you say it again... Oh yes, Douche Bag, with more from Los Angeles, to which I am fast becoming addicted. Now, I don't want to kill the healthy competition between East Coasters and West Coasters, and sure, the fashion, parties, power and money are greater in New York, but I am sorry, you cannot compare the lifestyle. When in New York City, people are struggling with the incoming cold weather, meetings, sirens and crowds, while everything is so pretty out here in LA! People are genuinely happier and I mean... why not? Everyone is good looking! And on my part, today I had a killer meeting about a new show concept, ate lunch outside, and came home to sit in my jacuzzi for 45 minutes and now I am watching TV while trying to focus. Not bad right? Work AND play! And did I mention everyone is good looking in LA?

So let's re-cap the last few weeks’ activities...

Mr. Mickey's Guide to the Most Luscious Men in L.A.: Aaron

By Mickey Boardman

aaron & mr mickey

Sorry that Mr. Mickey has been away, pussycats, but the rigors of daily blogging can sometimes be too much for a gay (particularly when he has no laptop, which would makes things SO much easier because then he could just blog from home or whatever jetset destination in which he found himself!).

Anyhoo, here is the most luscious man in all of L.A. -- his name is Aaron and he is the most talked about up and coming actor in the City of Angels. He's gorgeous and has done some modeling, but frankly, it wasn't for him. Agents feel free to contact MM if you'd like to cast Aaron in something. MM is hoping to work very closely with Aaron in the future!

Anastasia Ashley's L.A.

By Alexis Swerdloff

AnastasiaAirwalkAD3.jpg

After hanging with the blonde bombshell (and co-shaking our booties to Q-Tip) at the recent PAPER Nightlife Awards, our love for pro-surfer Anastasia Ashley was solidified. In addition to grabbing first place at the Corona Extra Surf Circuit Event last month in Puerto Rico and being a sexy vegan, the L.A. native's coming out with a line of Stride Rite shoes that’ll be available in January! We asked Anastasia to reveal her favorite spots in L.A. and she was kind enough to oblige.

EAT: I love Katana on Sunset. They have an amazing atmosphere and there are always good-looking people there. Pink Taco, which just opened, has a fun vibe and it’s in the Century City Mall, so it’s fun to go to Bloomingdale’s, grab some clothes and then go eat some good Mexican food.

SHOP: Madison on Robertson is amazing. They have high end lines with a mix of not-as-famous designers. I Love Yana K on Melrose. They do custom dresses, to make sure they fit just right. Most of the stuff in there is one of a kind, so you won’t see anyone else wearing your clothes!

SURF: Third Point in Malibu is kind of crowded, but worth it. It has some of the longest waves in California. Matthew McConaughey surfs this spot a lot. El Porto in Manhattan Beach is always consistent, always breaking. Most days I usually head down to Newport and surf a spot called 54th St. I love Orange County too.

Latex Gloves Mysteriously Abandoned Near PAPER's L.A. Project Storefront

By Ann Magnuson

LatexGlovesBlogPhoto.jpg

I know you really want to see photos of all the glamorous celebs and scenesters who attended PAPER's opening night party here in L.A. this last Wednesday (Phyllis Diller! Perez Hilton! Incedibly Young and Cute Super Trendy People Whose Names Escape Me Now!) But you can go to any ole blog for that info. Or click here. What I found intriquing were these discarded latex gloves laying on the sidewalk about a block north of PAPER's temporary L.A. headquarters on La Brea Boulevard. They were laying in front of a building that appeared to be a synagogue of some kind although it looked abandoned (the signs that read "Women's Entrance" and "Men's Entrance" appeared to be slightly painted over and the windows were barricaded -- strange, given that's prime real estate there!). At any rate, it's nice to know some kind of perversion is still lurking in the shadows here in Tinsel Town. (Just what WERE Phyllis Diller and Perez Hilton doing before the party?)

Welcome to L.A., Kim, David, Mickey, Carol, et al!

L.A. Is OK

By Kim Hastreiter

China Forbes, Kerry Simon, Thomas Lauderdale

So I was invited by my dear friend Thomas Lauderdale to play the triangle (I kid you not) with his band Pink Martini for three nights this week at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. So here I am in L.A. I am actually staying at a really, really cute newish little hotel in West Hollywood called The Chamberlain. As it was Emmy weekend and I was really fried from Fashion Week, I wanted to stay somewhere quiet and was recommended this little discreet hotel which is located on a residential street above Santa Monica Boulevard. The building used to be an apartment house and the designer (aesthetically in the Kelly Wearstler school) made it cute and comfy -- especially the very Palm-Beach-looking little restaurant off the lobby.

On arriving, I hosted a fabulously fun dinner for the band nearby on the patio of my new friend, the chef Kerry Simon's (see him above, sandwiched by a cotton-candy-eating Lauderdale and Forbes!) chic L.A. digs (called SIMON/LA) at the Sofitel Hotel in Hollywood. Lots of old friends were there, such as Paige Powell, who came with her dear friend Nick Rhodes ( of Duran Duran), who had just flown in on Larry Gogosian's private jet (so L.A.). I love Nick (see photo below with Paige). He's a sweetie.

Moss in L.A. Countdown!

By Kim Hastreiter

murray mossmurray moss

So the design guru Murray Moss will finally open his doors next Thursday night on Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles with a big bash. It all should be very glamourous (depending on which movie stars are in town). His huge amazing shop in L.A. won't be a duplication of his Greene Street shop in New York City, but will instead sell his larger designer pieces. At the start, he won't be selling the bread and butter design items he's famous for, so Los Angelinos will still have to wait for all that fun stuff. This L.A. shop (which is only his second) will be much more like a gallery with shows and large one-of-a-kind pieces by designers like Studio Job, Martin Baas and The Brazilian Compana Brothers for sale. Ya know, like those designer chairs that sell like hotcakes for 200k. (Moss, 8444 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA, 90069.)

On another front, Moss is also busy working on editing an entire issue of House and Garden (I think it's for February but I'm not sure) which he is taking quite seriously... If Moss can edit a magazine as brilliantly as he can edit his shop (and supposedly they've given him total control -- ha ha) House and Garden will be LUCKY because this issue will be a sellout and a huge collectors item.

L.A. Burns!

By Ann Magnuson

Johnny Kobra

This latest fire in Griffith Park is blazing out of control! It's Tuesday night about 10 p.m. here in L.A. as I write this and it doesn't look good. The base camp that the fire department set up in the park is surrounded by fire! Who knows what is going to happen? I've never seen anything like this in my life! The photo above was taken by one Johnny Kobra, just one of the local Angelenos who have submitted their own photos to the L.A. Times website (which has astounding photos of their own -- see below.)

Kobra's pic was taken on Vermont Avenue, where I was earlier this evening dropping some mail off at the post office. The flames were 60-70 feet high and formed an apocalyptic backdrop to the palm trees and houses in the hills of Los Feliz. I couldn't stop staring and kept driving to get better views. Everyone was out on the street staring, pointing, taking pictures. The helicopters were whizzing back and forth from the Silver Lake reservoir where they were picking up water to drop on the flames creeping over the hillside at breakneck speed.

FOWL: The Best Show in L.A. -- Returns!

By Ann Magnuson

fowlThe amazing Robbie D returns as Jer Ber Jones in FOWL, probably the best show I've seen in YEARS! While some people will be sweltering with a crowd of 60,000 in 120 degree heat at Coachella, YOU can be sipping an ice cold margarita in the cool, intimate environs of The Cavern Club Theater (located in the basement of the infamous Silver Lake Mexican restaurant Casita del Campos) having your mind blown by the astounding theatrical strangeness that is FOWL! Really, this show is FANTASTIC and unlike anything you've probaby ever seen before! Plus this latest incarnation features new songs!!!!
