Hipsters and Prepsters, Unite! Dorrian's Summer Karaoke's Last Night

Whether you're there to reunite with your long-lost boarding school and college classmates or you're there for the cheap drinks, good times and great tunes, Dorrian's summer karaoke has been the place to see and be seen all summer long. Sadly, tomorrow night, August 19th, is the last night they will be having their now famous sing-a-long. Known for a long time as the stomping grounds of the preppy, well-heeled, New York/Connecticut set, Dorrian's has gotten some overdue attention from downtown's hipster scene. In fact, just last week, I spotted the practically dred-locked downtown rocker/it-boy E.B. Sollis among the sea of searsucker and pastel. That same night, I mistook gorgeous photog/girl-about-town Lizzy Fraser for the ghost of Edie Sedgwick. Other regulars and such include Cabell Brown, Ivanka Trump, Winston Lapham, Serena Tufo, Julia Hoyt, Hunter Ryan, and Peter Smith.
So, should you find yourself in the shower tomorrow night, using your shampoo as a microphone and singing along to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing," why not throw some clothes on and join the cool kids at Dorrian's (on Second Ave. and E. 84th St.).

The Future Only Belongs to the Future Itself: Deborah Gibson to Host Karaoke Night at Spotlight Live

Deborah (née Debbie) Gibson is a former teen pop idol we can really get behind. Not only did she kind of rock it as Gypsy Rose in 1998's Paper Mill Playhouse revival of Gypsy, but we just learned that she'll be hosting and performing at an "'80s Karaoke Party" at Spotlight this Thursday. The evening's festivities are to celebrate Spotlight's new, regular Thursday night '80s Karaoke Experience party. Sounds intriguing-ish!
In other DG news, from May 4-24, she'll be taking on Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City with a "Pop Goes Broadway" engagement.

You + Shandi Sullivan = Tonight at Pianos

You may have already seen this in our Tips for Today section, but just to hammer the point home: You can potentially sing karaoke with Shandi Sullivan (America's Next Top Model cycle 2 finalist) tonight at Pianos. She's co-hosting their weekly "Karaoke Dokey" night with Timmy from The Whitest Kids U'Know. What next? Will we find out that Whitney Port from The Hills is bartending at Max Fish?

Ersatz Axl Rose Lives and Lets Mommie Dearest Die (For Our Sins)

While looking for a suitable link to Traumatized Inner Child for the previous "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" post I came across this nugget and just felt it deserved it's own moment in the spotlight. People really are deliciously nuts out there!
(I recently read about Joan Crawford's abusive Dickensian upbringing and the saying "Hurt People Hurt People" certainly rings true in her case. Also -- I think Faye Dunaway did a superb job in that movie. There is no 'over the top' when it comes to Crawford's story. I say quit apologizing!)

About Last Night... Of Montreal Karaoke!

Saturday night was quite possibly the best night of my life. Of Montreal! Karaoke! Michael Showalter! David Wain! Paul Rudd! These things are incredible on their own, but together at Studio B they equalled perfection.
Michael Showalter (as himself and also as one of his characters from Wet Hot American Summer, Alan Schemper) hosted the night. Of Montreal played an amazing set featuring songs mostly from Hissing Fauna and Sunlandic Twins. Kevin Barnes and company are amazing performers, with shows that get more theatrical every time I see them. This time there was a gimp that adorned over-sized crustacean body parts and danced on stage while the band played. Barnes even got on his shoulders at one point -- while singing!
After their set there was a brief intermission followed by Of Montreal Karaoke! The band had picked a set of standard Karaoke songs (ie "Rasberry Beret," "Sweet Child Of Mine," "Blister In The Sun," etc) that they would play while attendees sang! It was incredible. The highlight of the night was definitely Paul Rudd and David Wain's surprise performance of Boston's "More Than A Feeling." The crowd went insane.
What's more, NY Doll went a little bit nutty herself. I was standing by the bar when Paul Rudd first walked in. I was basically in a Paul Rudd/David Wain sandwich at one point (see pics at right). Swoon!
