The Breed: Killer Dogs!

By Dennis Dermody

The Breed

Poor Michelle Rodriguez -- she has bad luck on islands. She was killed off in the TV show Lost, and now in The Breed, she and some college friends travel by water plane to a remote house on an island to party one weekend only to find the place inhabited by genetically engineered killer dogs. Bad puppy! Produced by Wes Craven and directed by Nick Mastandrea, it's actually lots of fun. None of that annoying computer generated CGI -- they used plenty of real dogs and grease them up so they look pretty threatening. Others in the cute cast include Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning, Hill Harper and Eric Lively. Made me think fondly back on The Killer Shrews and other psycho-dog-themed movies like Cujo, The Pack, Man's Best Friend, Devil Dog - Hound From Hell and one of my all time faves, Baxter....

Teeth Gets an R!

By Dennis Dermody

teeth

Good news for the movie Teeth, the wonderful dark comedy by Mitchell Lichtenstein about a teenage girl named Dawn (Jess Weixler) with teeth in her vagina. It just got an R rating, which is a big relief for a movie like this. An NC17 can really cripple box office, and this film needs to find its audience. Saw a rough cut of the movie many months ago and it was just terrific -- almost a feminist horror comedy, but fun from start to finish. Think it will reach theaters in the Fall.

Mario Bava Box Set!

By Dennis Dermody

MarioBava_.jpg

Got the upcoming Mario Bava Collection Volume 1 from Anchor Bay Entertainment
and it's spectacular! Five Films from the legendary Italian maestro of horror: Black Sunday (1960) with the beautiful Barbara Steele as a witch burned at the stake who returns for revenge. Black Sabbath (1964), a terrific three-part horror anthology with Bava at his gothic best. The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963) aka The Evil Eye, a sensational murder mystery starring John Saxon. The Knives Of The Avenger (1967), a Viking sword and sandals epic. And a true masterpice: Kill Baby Kill! (1966) about the demonic ghost of a little girl haunting a village. Fellini ripped off the little girl with the bouncing ball for Toby Dammit (his section of Spirits Of The Dead). Believe me the print quality looks better than this trailer but I love the "Shiver & Shake, Quiver & Quake" exploitation. The box set should be out in a week and you need it!!!!
