Fashion Schmashion

Introducing a New Schmashion Bunny!

By Kim Hastreiter

Julia Frakes

I met the cutest new fashion-loving friend on Facebook this year. Her name is Julia Frakes and here she is! At just 18 years old living at home in Scranton, PA, she is so cute, so obsessed, so knowledgable and so enthusiastic about fashion that I couldn't resist inviting her to contribute to my blog for the next few months. (Something I have never done before). I thought it would be fun to have her super fun and young perspective (a good contrast to my old hag fashion perspective) and obsessed fashion energy on Fashion Schmashion. I decided to do a little "get to know you" first, so I asked her a few questions.

Kim Hastreiter: I met you on Facebook... and we have now invited you to do the PAPER facebook page. Have you met a lot of fun people on Facebook?
Julia Frakes:I have indeed! It's been quite the unexpected flossy flossy socialista whirlwind!

Mr. Mickey

Pakistani Cutie Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

By Mickey Boardman

bhutto facebook

Is Mr. Mickey the only one who's been talking about how hot the son of Benazir Bhutto is? Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is only 19 and already the leader of the Pakistan People's Party, which is frankly cuckoo crazy, but par for the course in an Asian subcontinent where political dynasties are the norm. Sadly his much-disliked father is the caretaker/regent. Meanwhile, Time Magazine tracked Bilawal down via Facebook, the preferred social networking site of PAPER co-founder David Hershkovits. Here are some photos from the the site. It turned out there was also a fake Bilawal Facebook page too which shows he's really made it!!

Dylan Halloween: How Does It Feel?

By David Hershkovits

napolean in ragsAs my Facebook friends know, I've had the soundtrack for the new Todd Haynes movie I'm Not There on high rotation. Some of my favorites include Karen O's "Highway 61 Revisited," Stephen Malkmus' "Maggie's Farm," and Cat Power's "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again." A surprise of the two-CD soundtrack is "When the Ship Comes In" by Marcus Carl Franklin, a 14 year-old African-American who plays Dylan as a young man. Anyone who cares, knows by now that Haynes cast six different people to play Dylan at different periods of his life, including Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere. So if you're looking for a Halloween costume, how about looking to Bob Dylan lyrics for inspiration.

Eight Items or Less: Mr. Mickey's Kylie-Tastic Birthday, Wasteful Phone Books and Balazs' $350,000 Terrace

By Gary Pini

1. It's Mr. Mickey's birthday so we'll begin with a little present: Kylie Minogue's new video for "2 Hearts." Have fun tonight, Mickey!

2. General Motors is running an ad campaign touting fuel efficiency, ethanol etc. that includes tips to save the planet taken from a book called The Green Book. These caught our attention: Telephone books make up almost 10 percent of waste at dump sites. ATM receipts are one of the top sources of litter on the planet. Commercial car washes use up to 100 less gallons of water to wash a car then doing it yourself.

3. In the stacks of flyers at a gallery in Chelsea, we spotted one for Michael Alan's Draw-A-Thon. The event, held every Saturday in October at 64 East Fourth Street, features 20 nude models in a 2,000 square foot, multi level space with live music and costs $24 for a full day pass or $15 for half. All are invited to draw, paint or just "think and be influenced... by models giving emotion and energy."

4. We noticed a cool new store -- actually two stores -- while walking on Smith Street in Brooklyn. Both are called Homage and one feature "100 percent organic snacks" and the other sells skateboard decks, wheels etc.

5. According to Comscore Inc., Facebook users were up 33 percent in August while MySpace was down 7.4 percent.

6. Somebody is selling a 342-square-foot cabana on the terrace of Andre Balazs' new Jean Nouvel desiged building on Broadway for $350,000. You have to already own a condo there, however, to be eligible to buy.

7. From the London Times re: the demise of the music business: "A revealing story doing the rounds in America tells of a young rock band who decided to stop selling their CDs at gigs after they discovered that by offering their CDs for $10 they were cannibalising sales of their $20 T-shirts. The truth now is that a rudimentary cotton garment with a band logo stamped across it that has probably been manufactured for pennies in a Third World sweatshop costs about twice as much as an album recorded in a state-of-the-art western studio. And even at that price, recorded music isn’t selling."
