Shandi Sullivan Serves It Up at De Berardinis Salon
By Whitney Spaner
Have you, like us, been wondering where Shandi Sullivan from season two of America’s Next Top Model, has been hiding out? Well last week while visiting the new De Berardinis Salon in Chelsea I was surprised to see that our long-blond-haired beauty is now sporting a short black do and pouring Prosecco for the well-coifed customers. Not to worry though, it seems she's still modeling -- she can also be seen photographed at the entrance. The salon itself is bright white with a hint of '70s glam -- think gold wall decor and crystal chandeliers -– designed by the salon’s owner and master stylist Adrian De Berardinis.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow!
By Whitney Spaner

As some of you might know, I'm a little bit into hair. I have always had a (maybe not so) secret dream of supplementing my already long blond locks with extensions that would add some thickness and length a la Blake Lively. But, of course, getting them at a salon is very expensive, and the idea that I could leave one behind at a party, in a cab or (god forbid) a bed is a bit unnerving. But the other day the extension fairies came to the PAPER offices and dropped down temporary hair in my exact color! Can you guess which picture I'm wearing them in?
The temporary hair is by Paris Hilton's line with Sally Beauty called Clipin-Go by Paris Hilton and yes, Paris graces the box, but I didn't let that stop me. The hair comes in one piece and it clips onto the back of your head starting by your ears and wrapping around to the other side. It's not hard to put on -- PAPER's Lysee Webb did the honors and although I could feel them they weren't uncomfortable.

Beauty School: Prescriptives Mineral Makeup SPF 15
By Carol Lee

As a skeptic of mineral makeups that seem to be all the fuss these day, I was not exactly thrilled at first by Prescriptives All Skins Mineral Makeup SPF 15. But after a couple of tries this has become my new summer obsession. When it comes to skincare/beauty products I have brand loyalty. Tough I'm not a big Prescriptives girl I know that their products are clean and gentle. So I gave the ASMM a whirl and was instantly pleased. It's very light and scentless, and it also makes your pores look smaller without clogging them. Another minor miracle is that ASMM gives you a subtle shimmer, a post-coital glow, if you will, rather than a walking disco ball effect. My friends actually commented on a night out: "You look like you've been having a lot of sex." Well, that's a good look don't you think? Also, this mineral cover-up is supposed to be sweat and humidity resistant, water resistant and non-acnegenic (don't you just love cosmeseutical made-up words?). I put this baby to the test during the recent 100-degree heat wave and I must say it really delivered. And with calcite, mica, amethyst and rose quartz on your face you feel like the queen of Egypt. $32.50 (+ Round Buff Brush $30). www.prescriptives.com. B+ (I would give this a higher grade if the brush were included in the package.)

Beauty School: M LAB Travel Collection
By Carol Lee

The season of faraway holidays and weekend getaways has arrived and if you like having all your little toiletry trinkets all bundled up and ready to go at any moment, here's something for you. The London-based skincare line M LAB, which until recently was only available at Harrods has opened shop online and their travel collection's got all the bells and whistles of the latest cosmeceutical advancements (peptides, antioxidants, plant extracts, etc.). The pouch contains seven different types of anti-aging essentials such as cleanser, toner, serum, treatment cream, day cream, eye cream and body cream. The black and clinically minimal packaging makes you feel like you're using something fashionably "now" while the fresh "lab" fragrance and tingly sensation of the contents makes it feel like you're using something just out of Pyrex mixing bowls -- in a good way. $130. mlabonline.com. Reality Bites: JanJay & Tina from The Fashionista Diaries
By Blaire Huntley

The revolution will be accessorized! Or so exclaims the posters all over the city promoting the Fashionista Diaries, the hit SOAPnet show that follows six eager assistants around New York as they try and make a name for themselves in the publishing and fashion/beauty PR industries. JanJay Sherman and Tina Patient are the two loveable assistants working with FLIRT! Cosmetics. PAPERMAG sat down with the diverse pair and talked boys, Fashion Week and Nicole from Queens.
JANJAY SHERMAN

Blaire Huntley: What’s changed since you’ve started the show?
JanJay Sherman: Oh my gosh, there’s so much that’s changed. Ever since I started the show, I definitely feel like professionally I’ve grown. I’ve learned a lot about this industry that I did not know. Initially I wanted to do fashion PR, but the transition from fashion to beauty has been an awesome influence and I’ve found that I have strengths that I didn’t even know that I had. I also feel like I’ve made amazing friends along the way. I feel like everyone -- you know, even though we have our differences and we’re all so different personality-wise -- we’re all rooting for each other. I get recognized all the time, which is definitely odd for me. People are like, “Oh my god! JanJay!” and I’m looking at them like, “Me?” So, I mean, it’s changed in a lot of aspects, but it’s been all positive changes.

Créme de la Créme: Under $20 Edition
By Carol Lee

1. Tiger Balm - $5.27
Tiger Balm used to be so ubiquitous, but now it feels like a product of a by-gone era. Well, I've fallen in love with TB all over again! I saw it all tucked away in my medicine cabinet with a rusty cap and remembered what a multi-tasker this little guy can be -- from muscle aches, insect bites to a stuffy nose. I also love the smell of camphor.
2. Stella McCartney Stella Eau de Parfum Roll-On - $13
I saw this at Sephora and thought it was the best on-the-go perfume. It is exactly the size of a Tide stain remover pen and it smells really nice -- flowery but not too sweet... can't go wrong with notes of rose, peony, mandarin, rose and amber.
3. Smith's Rosebud Salve - $5.50
Another timeless gem. The directions say use it on chapped skin, blemishes, diaper rash and detergent burn. Beyoncé once said that she uses it to keep her eye brows in place. But the best use for this all-purpose balm, hands down, is on the lips -- it keeps them moist and also gives them a natural gloss.
4. Bach's Rescue Remedy - $9.95
This bitter liquid drop is made with pure flower essences, works like a natural Xanax and comes with one of those mini-turkey-baster-looking things. Good for taking on a plane or whenever feeling anxious, it's supposed to relax and mellow you out.

Créme de la Créme: Get Your Summer Skin on With Burt's Bees Radiant Body Lotion
By Carol Lee
I’m not one of those people who “summer” away from where I live year round and I’m either working too much or too lazy to squeeze in much beach time. So whatever makes me chase away the summertime blues is pretty cool. And as the saying goes, it’s the little things that make you happy. One of those things for me is using body moisturizer with some subtle shimmer (yep, I know, it really doesn’t take much…). It’s a quick pick-me-up and an easy way to add some razzle-dazzle during the dog days of August. One of my favorite skincare companies Burt’s Bees (their beeswax lip balm has been a staple in my makeup bag for-evah!) just came out with a little sumthin’ sumthin’ called Radiant Body Lotion made with royal jelly.
When you put it on it’s smooth like buttermilk and smells like baby and honey, but the crème de la crème touch is that the mica in the lotion lends a coat of Hollywood red-carpet-ready shimmer. (FYI: mica is a group of shiny minerals and its usage goes as far back as cave paintings and as recent as toothpastes.) I’ve been using this after the shower before heading to work and I feel like a million bucks. How’s that for puttin’ on the ritz! $9. Get it here.

Crème de la Crème: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Kiehl’s Créme de Corps Body Lotion SPF 30
By Carol Lee
Kiehl’s is the go-to skincare line for both genders who crave gentler and cleaner ways to keep their body healthy-looking. They're known for their amazing plant-based skincare products and Créme de Corps Light-Weight Body Lotion SPF 30 is no exception. Made with delicious all natural ingredients such as jojoba butter, olive fruit oil and sweet almond oil, and rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants, Créme de Corps keeps your whole body soft and smooth while blocking the sunrays. It’s as light as freshly whipped cream and has a subtly decadent scent. Crème de la Crème recommends Créme de Corps as a must for any serious sun warriors. Get it here.

Créme de la Créme: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Shiseido Suncare Trio
By Carol Lee

If you are really serious about shielding your precious face from pernicious rays, there is a plethora of specialized goodies for targeted protection. Shiseido, in case you didn’t know, is Japan’s first western-style pharmacy that’s 135 years old! They make great makeup but they also make mean suncare products. They’re easy to spot -- the whole skin care line comes in cool shimmery blue packaging. One of my all-time favorites is Shiseido Sun Protection Spray for Body and Hair SPF 16. This multi-functional spray will surely come in handy at the beach. Not only can you spritz it as you please all over your body, as a cherry on top, it works wonders for your hair, preventing dryness from the sun. I’ve been using this for a while and it’s one thing I always put in my beach tote along with a sunscreen. $26. Get it here.

Crème de la Crème: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Estee Lauder Tinted Moisturizer
By Carol Lee
I swear by tinted moisturizers in the summer! A good TM is the best multi-tasker you can have around in the sweltering days of heat and humidity. It moisturizes, lightly bronzes, conceals and protects all in one dab! Estée Lauder’s DayWear Plus Multi Protection Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 does just that. Estée boasts this little beauty as their most powerful anti-oxidant cocktail that packs a big punch with South African red tea, grape seed, rice bran, rosemary, resveratol, vitamins C through E and little something called Eukarion, a synthetic anti-oxidant that fights aging. It is also smart enough to reflect light and use it to “create a subtle brightening effect.” In short, this baby is like Photoshop in a tube. Did I mention that it smells as cool as a cucumber and comes in four different shades? $35. Get it here.

Créme de la Créme: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Hampton Sun Face Cream
By Carol Lee
Hampton Sun is the new cool kid on the sun care block (they launched in 2005) that’s won over the hard-to-please set of fashion editors and celebrities like Kelly Ripa, Sarah Jessica Parker and Renee Zellweger. And for good reasons… Their products are simple, chic and plant-based, and they don’t take basking in the sun lightly. After all, their slogan is “Smart Serious Sunbathing.” This posh sun-care line evokes the feeling of hanging out on the beaches of eastern Long Island -- even if you’re slumming it at Rockaway Beach you can skip the Jitney and fantasize that you’re in the Hamptons.
My new favorite is their daily facial moisturizer that is a yummy concoction of aloe vera, chamomile, peach, grape seed, cucumber, seaweed, ginger, lemon, vitamins A though E and anti-oxidants. It’s creamy and light, smells heavenly and comes in a cute white popsicle-like container with gold trim. Super Hydrating Face Cream SPF 15 does double duty at home (you can use it as a daily moisturizer) and at the beach. At $40 you get what you pay for which is a luxury facial sunscreen. Get it here.
You know what else is really cool? Dior Hydraction Visible Defense Light Creme SPF 20.

Crème de la Crème: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Clarins Expertise 3P
By Carol Lee
Hey, welcome to Crème de la Crème, a new Word Up! feature introducing you to what’s new, what’s cool and what’s smart in the beauty product department. We weed out the so-so stuff and give you, dear readers, the best of what’s out there that you should tell your friends about. To kick off -- and you should know that we’re terribly excited about this -- we’ve culled together the hottest summer skin care products that protect your precious body as well as keep it glowing everyday till we run out of stock. Now onto our first order of business....
Let me get a little Inconvenient Truth here for a sec… So in these days of global warming, ozone depletion and cell phones, apparently it’s not just enough to protect your face from UV rays. The iPhone-loving smarty-pantses at Clarins have come up with a skin cocktail that “protects skin from the electromagnetic waves produced by modern day communication devices” called Expertise 3P: Anti-Electromagnetic Waves & Urban Pollution Screen Mist, 3P standing for Poly Pollution Protection. This 3.4 oz spray shields your pretty face against biological stress, reinforces your skin’s natural barrier against "newly created environmental aggressors" and increases cellular energy. The Al Gore of skin care Expertise 3P is made with plants like thermus thermophillus, rhodiola rosea, white tea, succory dock-cress and glycofilm and has a subtle scent akin to Big Red. What’s more, it fights the universal enemies such as aging, dehydration and dullness at $40 a bottle. You can get it here.

Donatella Versace Smells Nice!
By Mickey Boardman
One of Mr. Mickey's favorite blondes, Ms. Donatella Versace, made a little appearace at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City to introduce her new fragrance Versace. MM hasn't smelled it yet but he's sure it's as sumptuous and sexy as Donatella herself! DV is looking particularly slim these days and Mr. Mickey needs to lay his hands on her diet because MM is so fat he's about to explode!!!!

Bald Truth
By David Hershkovits

I began shaving my head before Michael Jordan did, but it's true, as the New York Times notes today, that the look didn't take off until Jordan did it. I often wondered how Jordan's image would have fared had he not shaved his head, choosing instead to let his hairline recede further and further until disappearing altogether. His moves might have still elicited gasps of awe, but would he have sold as many Nikes?
In the story, "The New Niche: Hair Care for Men Without," we are told of the trials and tribulations of this growing segment of the male demographic. There are gels and ointments to help with the shave, to enhance the shine, to reduce the glare, to help with dryness or oiliness, to block the sun. There’s even a rolling razor to make the daily upkeep less stressful. Bald Guyz, Control Bald Head Balm, Bold for Men, Head Wipes and Matte for Men are some of the products now crowding the shelves of your local Duane Reade.
Little did we know there was such concern for this previously neglected minority. Actually, it was Russell Simmons who first encouraged me to take it all off. We'd subsequently run into each other and he'd tell me how great I looked -- of course, I believe him. He also turned me on to the Gilette Mach3 razor, swearing that it was the innovation of the century for men like us. Most after shave lotions have alcohol, which makes it quite painful to splash all over ones pate. Instead, I use alcohol-free aloe. There's a tip you won't find in the Times.
