Mr Mickey's Got a New Job: Jumping Out of Cakes!

By Mickey Boardman

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

In case this blogging thing doesn't work out, Mr. Mickey just found out he has a career to fall back on. The cuties at Barneys asked MM to jump out of a cake at the going-away party for Barneys NY CEO Howard Socol. MM j'adores and j'aimes Howard and his wife Sharon beaucoup so it was a pleasure. Check out the pictures. MM emerged to the strains of the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey and said, "God I'll do ANYthing for a $50 gift card!"

About Last Night... The Rogan for Target Private Shopping Party at Barneys

By Alexis Swerdloff

rogan for targetalexis01.jpg

Last night I headed uptown to Barneys for a private Rogan for Target shopping event (the collection is unveiled to the public today.) It was madness as fashion girls (we spotted Jessica Szohr from Gossip Girl and Angela from Project Runway amid a slew of editors and stylists) clawed their way through he racks, grabbing up all the size smalls leaving many a sad L and XL for the disappointed latecomers. I purchased two items, a simple, summery white and gray blouse and this here leopard print dress (which I wasn’t going to get -- not so much my style -- until one girl in the dressing room insisted I buy it). I later saw Julie Gilhart sporting the number while chatting with Simon Doonan and Rogan Gregory and felt better about my purchase. I have to say, I had my initial doubts about the collection, but up close and in person, I think this is one of the best Target designer collabs yet!

Eight Items or Less: Pink Floyd's Pig Was Found, Sebastian Horsley Is Allowed in U.S. and Rogan for Target Heads to Barneys

By Gary Pini

1. Pink Floyd's pig was found (deflated) in the California desert. The band's famous inflatable stage prop accidentally drifted away during their Coachella performance over the weekend. A La Quinta resident found a "big pile of shredded plastic" in his driveway early Monday morning and will receive a $10,000 reward from the festivals organizers. (via Yahoo)

2. British author/artist Sebastian Horsley is set to appear tonight and Saturday at two PEN World Voices events in New York City. Horsley was denied entry into the U.S. in March for "moral turpitude." UPDATE: We have received word from PEN that "Mr. Horsley was unable to attend this year and will not be appearing."

4. Target is introducing a line of eco-friendly clothing designed by Rogan Gregory but the line will first be available only at Barneys New York. (Photo at right from the collection)

Eight Items or Less: Kate Nash Played at Barneys, Bowery Ballroom Named Best Club and Elletaria Tied to Jimi Hendrix

By Gary Pini

1. Thanks to Loomstate, Sundance Channeland Barneys for the invite to their Earth Day Kate Nash concert on Tuesday! (photo via Guest of a Guest)

2. The Feds ordered a northern California brewer to stop using his hometown's name on his beer's bottle caps. The name of the town is Weed, California, and the caps used to say "Try Legal Weed."

3. According to Media Life magazine, nerdic is the fastest growing language in Europe. AKA "tech-speak," nerdic allows people to communicate across borders and added 100 new words last year. For example: "egosurfing" (verb) means surfing the web to find your own name.

4. Best rock club? Rolling Stone says: "Perfect sound, clear sight lines and zero attitude make the Bowery Ballroom the best place to see a show in Manhattan."

5. After several food critics reviewed new Manhattan dining spot Elettaria this week and all mentioned the location's (33 Eighth Street) vague relationship to Jimi Hendrix, we launched our own investigation. According to New York Songlines, the "first floor and basement of that address were Joe Heller's 8th Wonder, a groovy 1960s club that hosted bands like Vanilla Fudge and Cutis Knight & the Squires (featuring Jimi Hendrix). Upstairs was Psychedelic Solution Gallery." Hendrix' Electric Lady recording studio was across the street.

6. Wal-Mart-owned retail giant Sam's Club is limiting sales of 20 pound bags of rice to four bags per customer per visit.

About Last Night... The Versace Menswear Launch at Barneys

By Caroline Torem Craig

versace

There was no fancy food and not to much to drink last night at the Versace menswear launch at Barneys -– it didn't matter. All that was important was the superstar that is Donatella Versace!

It was like a receiving line in a glorious wedding. As soon as anyone came in the door, they politely waited their turn to speak and perhaps pose with the Real Italian Madonnatella.

The room was sweltering and packed, but Donatella stood ramrod straight in sky high heels and graciously welcomed everyone for what seemed like an eternity, answering the most ordinary questions (I caught the answer to one question, and her answer was “I saw Atonement today.”)

Guests in attendance included Patti La Belle, Woody Allen, Soon-Yi Previn, Busta Rhymes, Tinsley Mortimer, Kiera Chaplin, Amanda Hearst, Mickey Boardman, Alan Cummings, Leighton Meester, Stephon Marbury.

Luigi Tadini Reports: "Viva Lanvin!"

By Luigi Tadini

Luigi Tadini

luigi tadini

“My work doesn’t scream, it whispers.” – Alber Elbaz

Jeanne Lanvin opened the doors of 22 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1889 and quickly gained fame for her striking and delicate mother-daughter robes de style. In a matter of months the dress garnered a devoted and exclusive Parisian clientele. Jeanne’s exquisite designs where unique from the beginning, so it is no surprise that Lanvin would join the Syndicat de la Couture 20 years later.

The iconic style of this fashion house, born in the late 19th century, still creatively inspires the fashion industry today with its meticulous attention to detail.

Flash forward to 2001 when Israeli fashion designer, Alber Elbaz, was appointed the creative director for the brand. Elbaz had a long line of success before his position at Lanvin having worked at world-renowned fashion houses like Guy Laroche and Yves Saint-Laurent; but it was in his new venture that his talent and vision had no limitations.

Fashion Big Names Gather for the Barneys Alber Elbaz Party

By Mickey Boardman

Barneys%20Girls%20and%20Narciso.jpg

Last night was the gorgeous party that Barneys' Howard Socol and Iman held for Lanvin's adorable Alber Elbaz at the Bowery Hotel. Poor Mr. Mickey had to rush over at intermission from the Wooster Group's Hamlet, now playing at the Public Theater. MM j'adores Alber and couldn't miss him. The party was super glamorous and here's a line up of Fashion Ladies that'll prove it. When MM went to snap the picture of Victoria Bartlett, Daryl Kerrigan, Adi & Ange from Threeasfour and Barneys' Julie Gilhart, who should walk by and interrupt the photo but Narciso Rodriguez! It was a fashion clusterfuck people!

Check out the final photo after the jump!

Mr. Mickey Takes on Paris Fashion Week: Made in Heaven Jeans

By Mickey Boardman

paris fashion week

madeinheaven.jpgmadeinheaven2.jpg

In between high fashion runway presentations yesterday, Mr. Mickey took a little break and sashay'd over to the outrageously luxurious Park Hyatt Vendome for a meeting with Chloe Lonsdale and Misty Twigg of Made in Heaven Jeans. The line was started in the '70s by Chloe's godfather. Her mother was a big time model and her father started a chain of jeans stores that was eventually bought by the owner of Top Shop. Chloe has brought the line back and the cuties are going crazy for it. The jeans are all named after European Cities -- the Oslo, the Berlin, the Paris, etc. and the sailor jeans are particularly adorable. They're at Intermix, Bergdorf's and coming soon to Barneys (that's just in New York, kids). How cute are these girls? That's Chloe on the left and Misty on the right. What is it about these British girls that makes them so stylish and irresistible?

Farewell to the Sweet Kazuko

By Kim Hastreiter

kazukokazuko

The fashion world lost one of its most spiritual participants last Friday night. I first met the jewelry designer Kazuko through my late friend, the gallerist Holly Solomon, who always wore Kazuko's enormous crystals around her neck. Her work was always the first thing one saw as he or she entered Barneys New York on Madison Avenue. Kazuko must have had a zillion customers from Barneys over the years. Kazuko was a huge fan of PAPER and was always so sweet sending me letters and crystal surprises for many years. I was shocked to find out that she was only 65 at the time of her death. I have a feeling that Kazuko and Holly are sitting up there having a glass of champagne right this minute! RIP Kazuko.

Welcome to Schmashion Week!

By Kim Hastreiter

alberThis Fashion Week is nuttier for me than any one I can remember in years. First of all, NOTHING makes me crazier than a taxi strike in New York City. I refuse to take subways and am too poor to get a car and driver for Fashion Week, and so with the insane fashion show schedule coinciding with an insane taxi strike compounded by my ridiculous schedule, I have had to edit severely. For God's sake, the fashion world wants us to travel from an 11 a.m. show on Sixth Avenue at 40th St. to a noon show on Grand and West Broadway to a 1 p.m. show on a pier at Tenth Avenue and 36th St. to a 2 p.m. show in a church on Ludlow Street to a 3 p.m. show back at the tents at 40th and Sixth Avenue. And with no taxis? I mean, GET REAL. It's a bit over the top.

Not to mention, my dearest friend, designer Ingo Maurer, is opening his show at the Cooper Hewitt on Monday night right at the same time as the Marc Jacobs show. Oy. I will go to Ingo's opening, scoot to Marc Jacobs at the Armory, scoot back to the Cooper Hewitt for a dinner after the opening and hope no one notices. PLUS, I will be multitasking fashion and art this Saturday, going to five shows PLUS squeezing THE FABULOUS ART PARADE which PAPER, CREATIVE TIME AND DEITCH PROJECTS sponsor at 4 p.m. on West Broadway in SoHo. DONT MISS IT! I will be driving the Heartschallenger ice cream truck so scream, "Hi!" if you're there. On top of that, I am preparing to learn to play the TRIANGLE (the musical instrument), because next week I'll be dingling a triangle in Los Angeles for three days at the Hollywood Bowl with my old friend's orchestra Pink Martini, who will be collaborating with Carol Channing (divine).

Fashion Week Countdown

By Kim Hastreiter

creative growth

I always hate this last week of August. I always feel big anxiety before the shit hits the fan in September. And next week is going to be a doozie with the steam engine racing up to full speed Tuesday morning. On the other hand, I can't wait til Sept. 4th, because that's the day the big PAPER Barneys window will go up on the corner of Madison Ave. at 61st St. The window will be filled with artwork from our September issue -- specifically the fashion illustrations created by the developmentally disabled artists from a California-based art program called Creative Growth. If you haven't picked up our September issue, you must, because I swear this piece is really, really special. (A collectors item!)

The mentally disabled artists created the most amazing fashion illustrations from the fall collections (from the catwalks). I'm already getting phone calls from the designers themselves who want to purchase the drawings. Trust me on this one folks. It's special.

(check out the drawing they did of the fabulous Dolce & Gabanna gown above!)

Alexandre von Furstenberg and Lapo Elkann at the Gramercy Park Hotel

By Mickey Boardman

alexandre von furstenberg and lapo elkannHow delicious is this shot of two great tastes that taste great together? Alexandre von Furstenberg and Lapo Elkann canoodling at a party for Lapo at the Gramercy Park Hotel roof. Mr. Mickey is still recovering from the press conference that Lapo gave for his company Italia Independent at Barneys New York on Thursday. Barneys is the exclusive retailer in the US for Italia Independent's eyewear.

Lapo spoke and then took questions from the crowd. Naturally, Mr. Mickey was right up front, foaming at the gay mouth! You long time MMBloggers know that Lapo is truly the only man for Mr. Mickey and MM is ready to throw it all away and become a Torino, Italy housewife for Lapo. MM and Lapo did have a magical exchange at Barneys and you can look for the world's best dressed man (Lapo not MM) in an upcoming issue of PAPER. In the meantime you'll have to be satisfied with this photo from Style.com.

Kate Moss, Art Muse

By David Hershkovits

kate moss marc quinn

Kate Moss's Topshop line makes its U.S. debut tomorrow at Barney's. Many early reviews for her Topshop line have been less than flattering, but there's no accounting for taste, so expect to see these items flying off the racks. The cash registers will be ringing not only for Moss and Barneys, where it will be among the cheapest items sold in the store, but also for artist Marc Quinn. Quinn's sculptures of Moss in various yoga positions are on display at the Mary Boone Gallery through June 30. This is far from the first time Moss has served as muse for artists. Artcritical reminds us that W, following in the footsteps of British Vogue, commissioned artists and photographers to immortalize the uber model waif as well. The list of artists (not commercial photographers) who have used her in their work include Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Alex Katz, Lisa Yuskavage, Richard Prince, Chapman Brothers, Gary Hume and Tom Sachs.

Sexy Salesman Sergei Is Back in Business at Jeffrey!

By Mickey Boardman

sergei mihailovShoppers rejoice!!! Mr. Mickey's longtime favorite high-fashion salesperson is back. The sexy and chic Sergei Mihailov was King of the third floor men's department at Barneys and always steered Mr. Mickey to the most fabulous looks. Well sadly Sergei left Barneys (fear not, MM has found solace in the arms of salesman HB!). He spent some time at Dior Homme but now has landed at Jeffrey, which is fabulous news! MM just stopped in Jeffrey (he was on 14th St. popping into Stella McCartney to buy this season's tote bag) and MM must say they are so sweet at Jeffrey. MM doesn't know if any of you remember that skit they used to do on SNL where they portrayed the kids at Jeffrey as snobby fashion snots. MM was always outraged because the people are sooooo sweet there! Anyhoo, see you in the Meat Packing District girls!!!
