Introducing Fashion Week Guest Blogger Beverly Smith: “Ain’t Nothing to It, But to Do It.”
By Beverly Smith

When we’re in need of a ride on the Straight-Talk Express, we call up long-time PAPER friend/fashion expert Beverly Smith, who will always tell it like it is. The Harlem-born and-based Smith, who once worked as the senior director of fashion advertising at Rolling Stone, is a veritable jack of all trades, working as a public speaker, TV personality, writer (she wrote our August Rihanna cover story) and stylist. “One of my favorite TV appearances was for an Oxygen promo -- I had to tell my story of getting a bad hair weave and being forced to wear it to Milan for Fashion Week. It features me being extremely candid, backed by a gospel choir,” she told us. This Fashion Week, she’ll be fashion corresponding for BET and doing her thing as contributing editor of Latina. Amid the madness, she’ll be blogging for us about her various Fashion Week exploits. But enough jabbering –- Beverly?
What’s a girl to do? I’m a wee bit cranky due to my feet hurting and Fashion Week hasn’t even begun. Between getting my weaves/wigs together, making sure my undergarments have the right amount of support and juggling my roles of contributing editor at Latina, fashion correspondent for BET and my favorite gig, PAPERMAG blogger, I need to know -- what’s a girl to do?
“Uptown” we have a saying, “ain’t nothing to it, but to do it!” With that in mind my “twins” and I (see photo) plunged right in and attended the GQ/CFDA Best New Designers in America event last night. When I was invited I didn’t know what to expect. I planned on a 15 minute “drive by.” Well, that plan fell flat as soon as I entered the party, was handed a flute of champagne and laid eyes on the hottest male models. Shout out to Jim Moore and his team on the casting -- not an “eccentric” or “interesting” (code words for ugly in my book) looking one in the bunch. Those men were FINE and I’m so not a “modelizer!” Fast forward to two hours later, I was sharing a “ki-ki” with John Bartlett while “fans” kissed his ring, sipping a glass of wine with Bloomingdale's honcho Kevin Harter and chatting with the star of the night, Andre 3000!
