Indie Rock and Car Commercials
By Shanon Kelley
Last night while watching Lost, I was struck by the inordinate number (two in one hour!) of car commercials that featured indie rock heavy-weights. First it was a Pontiac commercial featuring Peter Bjorn And John's anthemic track, "Object Of My Affection" (see music video below). A bit later it was Honda with The Go! Team's "Huddle Formation." I'm not trying to suggest, of course, that this advertising scheme is by any means new (remember Modest Mouse's "Gravity Rides Everything" in a Nissan Commercial?). Nor am I shocked. It just struck me last night how frequent it's become.
With the music industry suffering as much as it has, it's no secret that musicians have been forced to seek alternative means of income. Touring has always been an obvious way, but let's face it -- unless you're Justin Timberlake and selling out coliseums, you're not going to make that much money from it. With that in mind, I don't consider selling your song rights to a car company to be "selling out" (a term which I believe is completely antiquated at this point anyway).
What struck me is just how smart these giant companies really are sometimes. Indie rock is filled with positive and uplifting anthems that are perfect for the spirit of, say, buying a car and taking a road trip. I myself am planning a cross-country trip for later this summer and aside from a few small details (i.e. getting a license), the only thing I've really planned out so far is all the music I want to listen to. It seems to me that as the years go by the line between leisurely activities and commerce is becoming more and more blurry. Who knows? It may come to the point where I can't listen to my favorite band without immediately conjuring up images of things I want to buy. It's a crazy world we live in!

Pissed Off Zsa Zsa Gabor
By Dennis Dermody
Here's one of my favorites -- Zsa Zsa Gabor doing an old car commercial and having a fit when the guy slams the slate in front of her. Just wondering what she had to say when her husband went for a paternity test for baby Dannielyn, saying he'd been having an ongoing affair with Anna Nicole Smith.

Rugby Stud Dan Carter for Jockey Underpants!
By Mickey Boardman
Mr. Mickey must say that if you really search the ole world wide web, it's easy to find pictures of cute boys in underpants that have a newsy component! Here is a shot of New Zealand rugby player Dan Carter who is a new spokesman for Jockey. Being a tasteful blog, we're only showing Dan flashing his man panties! Okay, we couldn't find a shot of him fully briefed-out so we had to go with this. We found the news on a charming little blog called AllAussieBeef, which you should check out if that's your cup of tea. Dig in and enjoy!!!

Manhattan Mini Storage Takes on Bush Administration
By Alexis Swerdloff

Yesterday, as I was stuck in traffic on the West Side Highway, I noticed that whoever’s running Manhattan Mini Storage these days has some serious balls. Their new ad campaign, which makes fun of/attacks the Bush/Cheney administration, is really funny and pretty shocking. I guess because MMS really corners the mini-storage market in New York (and they know who they’re audience is -- liberal New Yorkers stuck in traffic on a Saturday on the West Side Drive) they can do whatever the heck they want! Go Manhattan Mini Storage, go!

Orson Welles, Drunk as a Skunk
By Dennis Dermody
Another one of my favorite outtakes is legendary director Orson Welles drunk as a skunk trying to get through a Paul Masson wine commerical. Citizen Wino....

Jean Paul Goude's New PAPER Column
By Kim Hastreiter

We're so excited about Jean Paul Goude's new monthly column in PAPER that came out this week called Oooh La La. Jean-Paul, as I've written here many times, is truly one of my heroes and inspirations so that makes me doubly excited to have him on our pages. Goude's always been such an outrageous and powerful thinker that often his work gets him in trouble with his big corporate clients and he has to tone it down bigtime to get an ad or an image through.
His awesome subway billboards for Galleries Lafayette have been making Parisians laugh for a few years now but what the French have never seen are his original sketches and ideas that were way too outrageous for the client. Of course these are the ones we loved best so were gonna put one of them in PAPER every month.
This month we have a bride looking like she's feelling really good and screaming "OUIIIIIII," which must have something to do with that man that's hiding under her gown (we just see her groom's feet sticking out!). Check out the Goude illustration (top) in the April issue of PAPER that was his original proposed idea and view the watered-down subway poster (bottom) that Gallery Lafayette actually had him produce! So sad!
Of course, the client chickened out of this and the final subway poster of the bride ended up completely different.
