Kim Hastreiter to Receive a CFDA Award!
By Alexis Swerdloff
Posted Mar. 17, 2010, 7:14 p.m. ET
We here at PAPER are tickled pink to announce that our very own co-founder Kim Hastreiter will be receiving a Eugenia Sheppard Award at this year's CFDA Fashion Awards in June. The award recognizes fashion journalists "whose exceptional creativity has shaped fashion visually." Previous winners have included Robin Givhan, Bruce Weber, Cathy Horyn and Andre Leon Talley. Kim's reaction to the award might best be summed up by the OMG necklace she wore to the announcement of the awards. She says, "I never expect to win anything so it's surprising but flattering that people would be interested in my sideways take on fashion." Kim calls herself an enthusiast of creativity, design and rule-breaking. "I think there's amazing talent out there." This recognition inspires Kim to continue showcasing the great talents of the fashion world in PAPER Magazine and papermag.com
Kim was "discovered' by photographer Bill Cunningham when she was an artist working at a clothing store to make extra money. Cunningham admired her style and suggested her for a job at the SoHo Weekly News. It was there that Kim met David Hershkovits with whom she would launch PAPER Magazine in 1984. PAPER's mission from the start was to shine a light on the under-appreciated talents of the downtown style and art scene. Kim's coverage of young talents like Isabel Toledo, Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mizrahi made PAPER a must-read publication for fashion addicts everywhere.
Over the years Kim has curated a cavalcade of PAPER style events including a three-day showcase of young talents in Bryant Park entitled the Lab, Launch Pad and Lounge (which featured such designers as Geoffrey Beene and Rick Owens); the PAPER Project Series at Deitch Gallery; the $99 Store at Art Basel; and the Fashion Mobile, a day of outreach for young designers to show PAPER editors their wares. The first installment attracted hundreds of hopefuls including Doo.ri and Jeremy Scott. In 1995, PAPER launched its website papermag.com and Kim's style coverage reached a new global audience -- winning a Webby Award for Best Fashion Site.
Congrats, Kim!
Happy St. Patrick's Day -- Except for the Gays!
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Mar. 17, 2010, 12:26 p.m. ET
Mr. Mickey LOVES the Irish and has never met a more fun and hospitable bunch than he did when visiting Dublin. This welcome spirit, however, is lacking in the yearly New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade where gay and lesbian Irish groups continue to be banned from the parade on the flimsy grounds that it's a religious event and the parade stops in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral. New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly lesbian, marches in the Dublin parade which welcomes the gays. My response is: Fuck You, Parade Organizers. What kind of homophobic bullshit is this? It takes what could be a positive celebration of Irish pride and turns it into a divisive headache that leaves a bad taste in the mouths of people who support equality for all. That's our editorial for the day!

There's a Lot of Gorgeousness Happening at Paris Fashion Week!
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Mar. 9, 2010, 4:01 p.m. ET
Oh kids, it's been a dandy fashion week here in Paris. Mr. Mickey's favorite looks have been super-simple, chic and luxurious. Celine was the pinnacle. These are clothes for women who really have flawless taste and a big budget. Stella McCartney's show was her chic-est ever, leaning more toward YSL than rocker chick and showing that luxe doesn't mean you can't look young and cute while also looking expensively put-together. At Lanvin, Alber Elbaz took things to a new hard and sexy place which felt super modern but still kept the magic of Lanvin that he's been serving up for seasons. Givenchy, Dries Van Noten, and Sonia Rykiel all did what they do best and had great shows. Rick Owens is really a unique talent and his powerful, timelessly heroic warrior women knocked our socks off. And don't even get us started talking about Viktor & Rolf's mind-scrambling show!!! What a week!!!
Chatting About the Zoolander Sequel with Justin Theroux...
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Mar. 9, 2010, 12:39 p.m. ET
Sexy actor Justin Theroux will be directing the sequel to Zoolander, the film that poked fun at the world of modeling starring the pint-sized Ben Stiller as a male supermodel. We chatted with Justin, who was at the Viktor & Rolf show his longtime ladylove, stylist Heidi Bivens, about the upcoming film. Justin, you're going to direct the Zoolander sequel. Does it have a name yet? Zoolander Too?
Toolander. Until we have a better name we're going to call it Zoolander 2.
Are you doing research here? I know you're quite a fashion fan.
I like the fashion. Yeah I'm doing research.
Has Heidi had to sneak you into shows because people are afraid of this kind of thing after the movie Bruno made fun of the fashion world?
Noooo. We're not trying to do anything mean or avant-garde. People in the fashion industry like the movie I'm discovering.
Have you seen anything so far that's going to inspire you for the movie?
What's inspiring me is usually what's happening just outside the fashion show or the parties. That's where you get the most eccentric people and characters and you get to talk to them.
Hellllo! Olivier Zahm (editor of Purple Magazine and well-known heterosexual horny dude) would be good to have a cameo or be an entire character.
Olivier is fantastic. I would love to get some version of him in the movie. He's just great. Super cool and super funny and amazing.
If Heidi saw the script and said if you do a scene that makes fashion look bad I'll never have sex with you again, what choice would you make? Are you a filmmaker first or a horndog?
I'm a horndog first and then a filmmaker first and half.
One Whirlwind Minute with Beth Ditto at Viktor & Rolf
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Mar. 8, 2010, 2:29 p.m. ET
PAPERMAG did a one-minute chat with Gossip's leading lady Beth Ditto at the Viktor & Rolf show in Paris. And it only took 20 seconds for the irresistible Beth to say something outrageous. Hi Beth!
Hi Mickey! I'm late for everything.
What are you late for?
Everything. I was late for my period. Late for shows...
Well from what I read about you I have a pretty good feeling you're not pregnant.
Yes! (laughing) I am not.
So what brings you to Viktor & Rolf?
Well... pictures, perfume, sex mostly. I don't know which one I wanna bang. The Viktor, the "and" or the Rolf. I'm really excited.
Well I think that says it all.
Yes it does.
The Welcome Return of High-Fashion Headgear
By Mickey Boardman

Style visionary Daphne Guinness has lately been favoring a head-encompassing veil that evokes a 17th-Century funeral more than a contemporary fashion star, but as with most of Ms. Guinness's sartorial choices, we're fully on board. It seems some of Paris's more imaginative designers are also feeling frisky for little headgear. A stylish cherry on top of the fashion sundae as it were.

Victoria Beckham On Her New Collection: "My Competition Is Myself."
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Feb. 15, 2010, 2:14 p.m. ET
We must confess that we're a little bit in love with Victoria Beckham. She presented her new collection to small groups of glamourpusses yesterday, while giving a running commentary that showed her actual involvement in the collection and an ever-growing knowledge of the industry. The clothing (influenced by Martha Graham and the Dick Tracey comic books) was sexy, form-fitting with a splash of 1940's glamour. Beckham claims that as she gets older her personal style gets more casual and loose, but she still looked like a sex-bomb to us. We stole a few moments with Beckham after the presentation. You said you have had to prove yourself in everything you have done. Have you found the fashion industry more welcoming or skeptical then the music industry?
Maybe I can answer that tomorrow; I mean I don't know. I was telling my kids yesterday that 'Mommy is doing a big test.' And Brooklyn told me to write it on my hand or on my arm so I can remember what I have to say. But I really have enjoyed the whole process, and I feel really passionate about what I do... I think it is great that people have noticed my attention to detail and quality. And yes, I have had to prove myself but I think that is a good thing. I think everyone has to prove themselves not just me. Each season I have to continue to better myself. I mean, my competition is myself and each season I want to better myself and grow as a designer and learn techniques that I want to use more and more.
You mentioned your sons, do feel like you're a sexy mom? Do you worry maybe when they are teenagers their friends will want to come over because you are a MILF?
Oh God, as long as it is not the girlfriends trying to get their hands on my handbags, I don't care about that. I don't mind being a sexy mom.

Kerry Washington Talks Mamet at Jason Wu
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Feb. 13, 2010, 10:14 a.m. ET
What did you think about David Mamet before this?
I thought he was complicated and interesting. I was actually just terrified of going to rehearsal. I was a little intimidated by his theories on acting and the work he has done. I never expected him to be quite so lovable. He's great.
And it's such a great cast.
Oh my God. We're loving it. We love each other. It would probably be a really sucky job if there was one bad apple in the bunch because there's only four of us, but everybody's great. I feel like I got three new brothers and I don't have any brothers, so it actually works out.

Two For the Price of One! Phillip Bloch Gets Interviewed by Two PAPERMAG Reporters in One Day.
By Mickey Boardman & Michel Serruya
Posted Feb. 12, 2010, 6:29 p.m. ET
Two of PAPERMAG's star reportahs caught up with and chatted up Phillip Bloch yesterday. He is quite hilarious, that Bloch! First off, check out MM's q&a with him at Barneys and then Michel Serruya's tête-à-tête at Milk Studios. Mickey Boardman: If you had to date a fashion designer, if you were single, are there any fashion designers you kind of have a crush on?
Phillip Bloch: Well I would clearly only be dating them for the clothes. In that case I would have to say probably Rick Owens. I think that Alexander [McQueen] had an enfant terrible thing I could relate to. John Galliano used to have a terrible crush on me back in the day. He did! John will admit it! I modeled in his first couple shows.
MB: Oh, fabulous.
PB: And let's see. Tom Ford is pretty deboniare. Thing is, I like the brothers and unfortunately there are no black boys designing! Give a black boy a chance.
MB: It's true. That should be our goal, get Phillip a boyfriend.
PB: Give a brother a break, get a boyfriend. What's that saying? Just two sticks in a dark room away from being gay.
MB: OK... we have a headline. Anyway, we were just talking about how you used to date Robert Boyken.
PB: I used to date Robert Boyken, who owned Hurrah and then after Robert and I broke up, Marc (Jacobs) went out with him for years.
Simon Doonan Wishes He Were a Footballer's Wife
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Feb. 12, 2010, 5:14 p.m. ET

Barneys creative director Simon Doonan is always good for a chuckle. Despite having flown Concorde around the world and hobnobbed with the hoi polloi, he's really just a working class "slag" from the wrong side of the tracks. As evidence, we submit this interview, conducted at Barneys yesterday.
OK, Mr. Simon Doonan. I'd like to talk about fashion designers that you'd like to have sex with. Are there any? I know you are happily married, or as close as a gay can get, but are there any fashion designers you would date?
Oleg Cassini
Is he alive?
If I wasn't with my Johnny, I would...
What about Rick Owens?
I've really always wanted to be a footballer's wife.
Like that show Footballer's Wives?
Yeah, I'd be Chardonnay.
You'd be like Charlotte Church with her rugby boyfriend.
Well, I like football. Rugby's too middle class. I'm more working class. More like, well obviously David Beckham, Christiano Rinaldo, you know... there's something very attractive about a footballer. It's not like American football where basically they're in a constant state of concussion.
That takes away a lot of the fun for me too.
You can get some sense out of your footballer boyfriend. At least until he's had a few drinks. You can also get some cash out of him...
Are you looking forward to anything this Fashion Week? I know you're always looking forward to everything.
Always Thom Browne, always Rodarte, I like the more crazy shit.
What did you think of the Rodarte piece in The New Yorker?
It was good. People shouldn't be too critical. It's the very beginning of their fashion journey, which is going to be long and creative and interesting.
What do you think about Donatella Versace? I worship Donatella, so I just thought I'd ask.
I'm a Versace fan -- also she's a footballer's wife.
OK good. You sell Versace, right?
Yes, we've got a collection of dresses. Also, Donatella is such a good sport. She's the one person who I said, "let's get in the window!" to [for a photo op] and she said, "sure!" and she was wearing these 10-inch heels.
I remember that party, she was in particularly rare form that night.
She's good-natured, a very likeable person.

Ikram Goldman Talks Japanese Designers and Alexander McQueen
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Feb. 12, 2010, 4:14 p.m. ET
Ikram Goldman is one of America's most high-profile retailers, who has brought the likes of Alaia, Rodarte, Rick Owens and Givenchy to Chicago and to the back of a certain well known client in Washington, DC whose name rhymes with Trishelle Lobama. We caught up with her at Barneys for a little chit-chat. So here we are with Ikram Goldman. Ikram, walk me through your look. It's not the usual Ikram look.
Now is that a shirt or is it a dress?
It's a dress; it's a one-piece dress. I'm finally fitting into my old clothes.
I love it, because you're skinny and gorgeous.
[Laughs] Hardly skinny, but gorgeous, yes.
I think you're skinny and gorgeous. And is this a Chrome Hearts scarf?
It's not, it's my favorite new collection that I've been carrying in my store for the past year called Imp of the Perverse.
Imp of the Perverse...
It's the Edgar Allen Poe book.
It's a literary book which is obviously why I don't understand the reference.
That's right. Anyway, It's my favorite new collection. It is rock and roll.
Sally Singer and Son Malachy O'Neill Get the Hard-Hitting Interview Treatment From Mr. Mickey
By Mickey Boardman
Posted Feb. 12, 2010, 1:59 p.m. ET
Thanks to barely teenaged blogger Tavi, we're always on the lookout for the next pre-pubescent fashion star. Could it be Malachy O'Neill the mop-topped 10-year-old son of Vogue's genius Sally Singer? We got to the bottom of things with Malachy (and his mom) at Barneys during the party for the new Olivier Theyskens book, for which Sally wrote the intro.Mickey Boardman: So. Malachy, what do you think about fashion? Do you love it?
Malachy O'Neill: I like rock fashion, punk and stuff.
MB: I just went to see the Gwen Stefani show for L.A.M.B. Do you like Gwen Stefani?
MO: No.
MB: Why not? Or who do you like that has rock fashion?
MO: Uh, Green Day.
MB: You like Green Day? Did you know that there is a Green Day musical coming to Broadway? Are you excited?
MO: I saw it already. In California.
MB: You saw it in California already? Did your mom take you to see it?
MO: Yeah.
MB: My mom never took me to California to see anything.
Sally Singer: Who's your favorite fashion designer?
MO: I like Trash and Vaudeville.
