London Report: The Acne Paper "Art and Spirituality" Issue Launch

By Alannah Sparks

Fashion worshipers flocked to Christ Church in Spitalfields Friday to celebrate the ninth issue of Swedish line Acne's cultural journal, Acne Paper. Lit by flaming torches, the church was a fitting backdrop for the publication's sanctified theme – "Art and Spirituality." With a seraphic Tilda Swinton shot by Paolo Roversi on the cover, the new issue of the bi-annual celebrates “man’s virtuous gift for creation” and features interviews with David Lynch, Marina Abramović, and other visionaries.

Guests -- several of whom were perched on towering Acne wedge heels (and thus one step closer to heaven?) -- sipped white peach and elderflower cocktails and supped on scotch eggs and artichoke tartines. In fact, we became so fixated with the incredible footwear of attendees, that we spend a good portion of our our night crawling around on all fours to capture them on camera. One particularly dashing pair of leopard loafers caught our eye, and turned out to be the property of none other than Jonny Johansson, creative director of Acne (check back later for our interview). He confessed to being a bit of a shoe fanatic, and kindly pointed us to Liberty chief creative consultant and buyer Yasmin Sewell to capture the most incredible shoes of the night -- a pair of treble-pronged heels (Acne, of course) that made her appear as if she were levitating.

She wasn’t the only skyscraping guest: at one point in the party, three wise men on stilts teetered their way through the crowd as partiers were serenaded from the pulpit by a magnificent soul singer. Talk about a sensory overload – we hadn’t felt so celestial since we heard Leonard Cohen sing "Hallelujah."

When we left we found that the queue outside had multiplied considerably, all of London’s most devout fashion followers apparently keen to get a piece of the pious action. But for those of you who missed out on the party, Acne Paper is available worldwide today. Thank heavens for that.
