Hymne a l'Amour: Martha Wainwright Sings Edith Piaf

By Rohin Guha and Niina Pollari

On June 14 and 15, Martha Wainwright took to the Lower East Side’s Dixon Place and rolled out a collection of iconic chanteuse Édith Piaf’s lesser-known standards. Her intention was clear: to pay tribute to Piaf without attempting to emulate her. She was assisted by the gifted multi-instrumentalist Doug Wieselman. Jamie Catto, founding member of UK-based dance outfit Faithless, provided striking visual accompaniments for the event, which was being recorded for both a live album and a concurrent DVD due out this fall. As part of the final, off-the-record encore, Wainwright was joined by mother Kate McGarrigle on-stage to perform “La vie en rose.”
