I Wanna Buy This Cute Red Electric Car!
By Kim Hastreiter

I can't figure out why GM hasn't reissued the adorable, super cool, electric car called the EV1 that they designed and prototyped in the '90s. It is SO perfect for right this minute. The EV1 still looks stylish and amazing today. I WANT ONE! Bring it back!! The youth of America would go nuts for this car!! They'd sell tons of them! For those who don't know, The EV1 was the amazing battery-run eco car designed by GM in the early 1990s that was eventually prototyped, tested and leased (with great success) and then suddenly was mysteriously recalled and discontinued -- never to be seen again. The design was so prescient and was created long before anyone knew what a Prius was! (Look at how cute the red one is here.) GM, in an attempt to make good with Congress, is apparently putting an electric car, the Chevy Volt, on the market by the end of 2010, and GM CEO Rick Wagoner is set to drive to Washington in a prototype Volt in the near future. But the EV1 is just so cute -- COME ON! How about a reissue????
WKTEC Filmmaker Chris Paine, who drove (and fell in love with) the GM EV1 from 1998-2003 (when it was recalled) made a documentary about the EV1 called Who Killed the Electric Car. See it. It shows the potential of American design and techno ingenuity and it also proves that the American Auto Industry was first with great completely gas free eco vehicles... even though it was sadly discontinued amidst much controversy.
Here is a blurb about the film from Sony Pictures' website: With a jump on the competition thanks to its speed-record-breaking electric concept car, GM launches its EV1 electric vehicle in 1996. It was a revolutionary modern car, requiring no gas, no oil changes, no mufflers, and rare brake maintenance (a billion-dollar industry unto itself). A typical maintenance checkup for the EV1 consisted of replenishing the windshield washer fluid and a tire rotation.

Oh wow! I totally just saw this documentary. GM claimed they vociferously advertised this car, but I don't recall any advertisements here on the east coast. granted, I was a pre-teen in the early nineties, nonetheless, I don't remember any advertisement.
I was surprised that Senator Shelby, who criticized the Big 3 executives didn't ask about the electric car? Neither did Senator Dodd when he grilled them about the product deficiencies all three companies shared.
Typical congressional, political nonsense.
