This Week in Art Openings: Joshua Lutz, Jenna Gribbon and "Democracy in America"
By Mary Logan Barmeyer
Joshua Lutz, "Meadowlands"
Lutz has been documenting the 32-square-mile marshland that separates New York from New Jersey -- or as Robert Sullivan said in the introduction to Lutz’s book, the marshland that separates New York City and “the rest of the United States of America” --for ten years. The environs, which include haphazard structures built on an essential swamp, Newark airplanes and murky puddles, have an eerie quality (to say the least) about them, but what will really get you are the reflections on the inhabitants-- the “Meadowlanders.”
ClampArt, 521–531 W. 25th St., (646) 230-0020. Opening reception September 18, 6–8 p.m. Through October 18.
Jenna Gribbon, "Visions of an Insomniac Soothsayer"
With this exhibition, Gribbon invites us into her bed. Her oil paintings point out all the intimate and mundane things that go on in our little private microcosm, from ceiling- gazing to sex and other monkeyshines. Her bed in particular is dominated by a recurring dream of a looming tidal wave, which shows up in several places in the exhibition. Appropriately, the paintings are done on linen.
Priska C. Juschka Fine Art, 547 W. 27th St., (212) 244-4320. Opening reception September 18, 6–8 p.m. Through November 1.
Democracy in America: The National Campaign
If you haven’t gotten your fill of campaigns this election season, try to rally up some sentiment for the stars and stripes with this Creative Time exhibition at the historic Park Avenue Armory. After a year of touring the country collecting ideas on democracy, this different kind of campaign culminates at the Convergence Center with work from over 40 artists and speeches from community leaders, artists and activists (see here for a schedule). It’s free and open to the public -- so go ahead, perform democracy.
Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Ave., (212) 206-6674. September 21–27.
