Who's Reading What?: Spaulding, Mothersbaugh, and Waggoner
By Rebecca Carroll

ESPERANZA SPAULDING:
"I just read a beautiful little novel by the writer Tove Jansson titled The Summer Book. The stories she creates are probably the most eloquent and subtle portraits of nature, human nature and love ever written. Once I picked the book up I couldn't put it down until the last pages -- I even indulged in reading some chapters two or three times! I highly recommend it to anyone stuck in a big city this summer."
Esperanza Spaulding is currently on tour with her new album, Esperanza, which was released in May on Heads Up International records.
MARK MOTHERSBAUGH:
"I just picked up Gamesmanship: The Art of Winning Without Actually Cheating and Oneupsmanship. Both are very funny, written in early '50s, and I will be forwarding them to a director I have scored films with, Wes Anderson, who may have already read them -- some of his characters in Rushmore and The Royal Tennenbaums seem to have read these books. I can't give you more details -- DEVO is on tour, and somewhere between Australia and Japan I left them in a Singapore Airlines overhead compartment, along with my favorite sunglasses."
Mark Mothersbaugh is a multi-talented musician, composer and artist. He is currently touring with his iconic '80s punk rock group Devo.
BROOKE WAGGONER:
"Right now I'm reading Charles Spurgeon's Morning by Morning. It's a collection of essays -- one page for each morning. Very thought provoking. British-born Spurgeon is incredibly challenging and poetic."
Brooke Waggoner is a Nashville-based singer and songwriter. Her new album, Heal for the Honey, is out this month.
