This Week In Art Openings: It's OK, Hobnobbing Zmirkies and Connection
By Mary Logan Barmeyer
Roman Klonek, Hobnobbing Zmirkies
Since moving to Germany in the '70s, Polish-born Klonek has obsessed over comics and cartoons, inspiring his woodcut half man/half beast prints. They have a retro appeal -- or it could be that foreign appeal too -- and serve as rough drafts for the drawings he keeps as an autobiography of the hobnobbing zmirkies of his life.
McCaig-Welles and Rosenthal, 129 Roebling St., Suite B, Brooklyn, (718) 384-8729. Opening reception August 15, 7–10 p.m. Through September 8.
Nick Zinner, It's OK, Don’t Look at the Road
You should know by now that our favorite Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontliner is also an accomplished photographer. Having studied photography at Bard College, Zinner spends his time snapping artful photos when not touring -- and sometimes even when he is touring, as in the case of his latest exhibition, It's OK, Don’t Look at the Road. Shots of the crowd from the stage, mangled hotel bedsheets and party makeout scenes give us a glimpse of what life is like for a rockstar on the road, without seeming too over-the-top.
Fuse Gallery, 93 Second Ave., (212) 777-7988. Opening reception August 16, 7–10 p.m. Through September 13.
Jana Maneva Cuposka, Connection
This is the Macedonia-born artist's first exhibition outside of Europe, bringing this side of the pond ink drawings of disconnected human bodies. Her lines are precise, but she has added a few details to make them go awry. A woman might be in a lovely contrapposto, but with a hand detached from her body. Another might have a sullen expression with a house coming out of her head -- what grotesque beauty.
Galley MC, 549 W. 52nd St., (212) 581-1966. Opening reception August 16, 6–9 p.m. Through August 31.
