Shop of the Week: Tretorn
By Rebecca Prusinowski
Another Swedish label descends upon SoHo! Tretorn is the outdoor lifestyle brand known best for rubber boots and casual footwear, and they’ve recently opened their first worldwide concept store on Spring Street. The shop will carry all of Tretorn’s sneaker, sandal, and rubber boot collections for men, women, and children, along with their new men’s clothing line and sports accessories.
Tretorn has evolved considerably since their Nylite canvas tennis shoe ruled country club courts in the ‘80s. Preppy de rigueur has given way to more modern kicks that come in a variety of silhouettes, quirky design patterns and materials like quilted or patent leather. (We love the slip-ons featuring a very real-looking fish silk-screened down the front of one shoe.) Of course, there are plenty of the brand’s famous rubber boots for sale, ranging in styles from rugged (the Thule Mid vulcanized rubber mid-calf lace-up looks pretty serious) to ridiculously cute (see the kids Mary Jane boot above). Tretorn’s menswear consists of simple classics with smart details, whether it’s subtle pointelle stitching on a cotton v-neck sweater or vintage Tretorn taping on the pockets of a canvas jacket. The colors are fresh and the prices are friendly, too.
Like fellow Swedish retailers Acne and Dunderdon, Tretorn was designed to reflect its Scandinavian roots. The shop’s exposed brick, bamboo floor, light wood display fixtures and bright nautical palette evoke the country’s summer coastal style, and with 500 pound handmade Caillou boats and Kronan bikes positioned around the store, the brand’s heritage and continued commitment to outdoor living is apparent. A hidden garden space in the back is the perfect place to retreat as you ponder which new Tretorn T-56 shoe to purchase before rejoining the SoHo pedestrian traffic outside.

The Swedish can, and have done better than Kronan. What about the tons of higher-quality bicycles they produce. Good choice on Caillou though.
