Thoroughly Modern Minnie
By Paul Johnson-Calderon
As you all know, I put my dear friend Minnie Mortimer's clothing line on my June It-List last week. Earlier this month I went to Ms. Mortimer's trunk show and fell in love with her new label, appropriately named Minnie Mortimer. Her Lily Blouse (especially with the navy-trim collar), reminds me of the type of find you score when you go rummaging through old clothes in your childhood bedroom; like a vintage boarding school uniform top. The whole line seems to update the preppy look that Ms. Mortimer and her ilk were born into... that's not to say that her line is a stuffy snoozefest. Au contraire! In her debut collection, Ms. Mortimer has put a modern twist on the decorous duds of the preppy set. From her shorts, (luscious leg NOT included) to her dresses and tops, there really is something for everyone. Think about it: It's not everyday you find something you can wear to the beach club or the Beatrice Inn!! Check out her website, www.minniemortimer.com, for more info. AND GUYS... don't feel left out, the boxers are phenomenal... think Steven Alan, but better fabric.
Here's what Minnie had to say about her new line...
When did you begin designing these dresses and why?
I began designing less than a year ago. I just made pieces for myself that I couldn't find anywhere else. I quickly became addicted. Friends started asking for the pieces so I began making a few at a time -- just a few months ago I drew up a label and began to stick it in the pieces.
What inspires your own personal look and how would you describe your clothing line?
My look is a very mixed with a strong undercurrent of my preppy upbringing.
What can a woman expect to find in the Minnie Mortimer clothing line?
Very well tailored dresses and shirts in lots of fabrics and prints.
What inspired the boxers?
I'm obsessed with them! My husband! He had very specific rules for his -- elastic must be covered, shorts must have top button to open, not too slouchy so they fit into pants, and on and on. So I just designed some for him.
