Beauty School: Prescriptives Mineral Makeup SPF 15
By Carol Lee

As a skeptic of mineral makeups that seem to be all the fuss these day, I was not exactly thrilled at first by Prescriptives All Skins Mineral Makeup SPF 15. But after a couple of tries this has become my new summer obsession. When it comes to skincare/beauty products I have brand loyalty. Tough I'm not a big Prescriptives girl I know that their products are clean and gentle. So I gave the ASMM a whirl and was instantly pleased. It's very light and scentless, and it also makes your pores look smaller without clogging them. Another minor miracle is that ASMM gives you a subtle shimmer, a post-coital glow, if you will, rather than a walking disco ball effect. My friends actually commented on a night out: "You look like you've been having a lot of sex." Well, that's a good look don't you think? Also, this mineral cover-up is supposed to be sweat and humidity resistant, water resistant and non-acnegenic (don't you just love cosmeseutical made-up words?). I put this baby to the test during the recent 100-degree heat wave and I must say it really delivered. And with calcite, mica, amethyst and rose quartz on your face you feel like the queen of Egypt. $32.50 (+ Round Buff Brush $30). www.prescriptives.com. B+ (I would give this a higher grade if the brush were included in the package.)

Thanks for the review! I have been dying to find any type of review for this ever since I heard about this through the consultant with Prescriptives. Their really anticipating this makeup launch. It's nice to know that it can last in the heat! I live in Texas so it's pretty hot year round, especially in the summer. I am all into anything that is long-wearing and water-resistant. It is a shame though that they never include brushes when it comes to certain products.

I am equally excited to purchase this new mineral makeup. I used to use their liquid foundations until I discovered mineral makeup from another brand. Do you know if the makeup contains Bismuth Oxychloride. This is usually a bad ingredient found in most powder makeup and can irritate the skin. If you have the ingredients, I would love to find out before purchasing.

From the publicist: Yes, it does contain Bismuth Oxychloride. Our VP of Product Development Mari Yamasaki says “This ingredient helps with blendability and coverage. It has been used for decades in cosmetic products and is found in many face products. It is not a bad ingredient, rather it is a beneficial ingredient and it does not cause irritation.”

I have just started using the mineral foundation and LOVE it. I have used the Bare Escentuals Foundation, which always gets awards, and I think the Prescriptives Foundation is way better. I love that it has SPF. I love the buildable coverage that I couldn't get with other mineral foundations. I also love the photo finish that this foundation provides. My skin looks perfect with this foundation. Not to mention that there's amethyst in the powder. Excellent product and perfect for that light feeling during summer.

Hi Carol,
Thanks for your response. Let your VP know that Bismuth can irritate your skin if you are sensitive to it, like me. Shortly after powders; including eyeshadows, bronzing powder and certain mineral makeups that contain this 'shine property' derived from finely milled metals, warms onto the skin it can start to itch or become inflammed. She is correct, it has been used for decades, usually buffered by talc and other ingredients in cosmetics to be less irritating to the skin. I'll stick to my same mineral makeup that is Bismuth free.

Bismuth can irritate the skin. Some skins. However it does get a pretty bad wrap as a not needed filler. However it is needed for long wear. I have tried other Minerals with Bismuth and had the same problem. I have not had this issue with the Prescriptives product. I must say I really like it. The feel is weightless and the color for me is fabulous. Might be worth trying, you can always return it if you have any issues with it.

I have not tried the Prescriptives yet but I will. I really like all of their products...the only thing they were missing was a good mineral make-up. As far as bismuth oxychloride goes, you are both right to a degree. It can be irritating however there must be something good about it because I have tried at least 8 brands of mineral make-up that do not contain it and they just don't hold up to those that do. In extreme heat my face might itch alittle, but not always. I'll give Prescriptives a whirl!

Just wondering how this product compares to the Jane Iredale mineral make-up. Thanks!

Does anyone have the complete ingredient list? I can't find it anywhere. My skin is very sensitive to silicone oils and polymers such as dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane, and I was wondering if this product contains any of these. Thank you.

Here is an article I found on Oprah.com on mineral make up-
within the brands that claim "pure mineral" formulations, there is still another category breakdown—those that contain an arguably "natural" mineral known as bismuth oxycholoride, and those that do not.
A pearlizing agent that gives mineral makeup that "candlelight glow," bismuth oxychloride is a mineral, but it's not found in the earth. Bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing. Bismuth oxychloride is also frequently used to fill or "bulk up" or bind products, says Adams, and some say it comes with a heavy price.
"Bismuth oxychloride is considered a skin irritant and can cause itching and rashes and in large amounts it can cause cystic acne as well—it's one of the ingredients you should try to avoid if you have acne or rosacea or sensitive skin," says Frew, who also reminds us that some products in a line have this ingredient, while others do not. "Some products also contain very little, so it doesn't act like an irritant, but you won't know until you try it."

I've been using Prescriptives liquid makeup for years. I love the fact that is is fragrance-free and does not irritate my skin. The coverage is also unbeatable! I recently ran out of my Virtual Youth Smooth Vellum. I've been wanting to try a mineral makeup, but hesitated because I like the Virtual Youth. Well, my retailer was out of the liquid. I was surprised to see that Prescriptives now carried a mineral makeup. I tested some in the store and immediately found a match. I loved how it blended so flawlessly. I knew the brush would be as much as the makeup and I couldn't decide whether to wait for the liquid or make the plunge. I decided to buy the mineral makeup and found an identical goat-hair face brush at Sally Beauty Supply for $7.99. I also live in Texas and am used to the heat and humidity changing my makeup. It is 2:21 pm now and my face still looks as fresh as when I put it on this morning! I'm very impressed and sold on this product.
