Mr. Mickey Has a Date with Carol Burnett in Atlantic City!
By Mickey Boardman

Regular readers of the Mr. Mickey blog know that MM loves him a little Atlantic City! You can keep your Hamptons and give MM a stroll on the Boardwalk! Anyhoo, one of Mr. Mickey's favorite showbiz legends is appearing this weekend at the Circus Maximus Theater at Caesar's Palace: Miss Carol Burnett. The show is called "Laughter and Reflection with Carol Burnett" and is a Q & A session. How fun. Mr. Mickey will be asking about the Gloria Swanson appearance on the Burnett show! And naturally MM and his buddies Lee & Michael will invite Carol after the show to AC's only gay club West Side Bar & Lounge!
See you in AC!!!!

Caribbean Fashion Week: Runway Wrap-up
By Carol Lee

What I saw on and off the runway during Caribbean Fashion Week exceeded whatever I might have anticipated -- both the good and the bad. The fashion was as diverse as it could be, from the sexy little bikinis to dancehall get-ups, to black-tie-worthy gowns. When the designers hit the right notes they were as grand as anything you might see in big cities like New York. But what they didn't have was big city time management and organization. Of course, one does not go to Jamaica necessarily expecting those qualities -- it has other things to offer. However, when you're aspiring to be a player on a global platform and invite guests from around the world, it's bit of a shame that they fell short of making the best impression. Having said that, I think Jamaica is still awesome and I would go back, fashion or not. Here's the last batch of ensembles and models that made the experience all a worth while.

About Last Night... The 2008 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Marriot Marquis
By Caroline Torem Craig
Deep in the heart of Times Square, supermodel of the moment Agyness Deyn (in somber black as opposed to her signature wildly striped knee socks and clashing color outfits) arrived with father and son duo Albert Hammond and Albert Hammond Jr. Father Hammond (“The Air That I Breathe,” “It Never Rains in Southern California”), an inductee. Son Hammond, a Strokes-er and solo artist (check out his new album “Como Te Llama.”) PAPER asked inductee John Sebastian (of Lovin’ Spoonful fame) whether he smoked a lot of pot during the ‘60s, to which he replied, “I’m still smoking a lot of pot!” Dumbstruck with honest to goodness legend Loretta Lynn in front of me, I have to admit I slipped into a state of stupor and awe and asked her what her favorite song was. “Why, ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’” graciously leaving out the “you stupid ass!” As each honoree walked by, the 20-something photographer standing next to me asked over and over again, “Is that Paul Anka?” until I finally snapped and hit him over the head with my program!

Caribbean Fashion Week: Beachin' It!
By Carol Lee

We had a lot of free time on this trip, which is pretty unusual, and us New Yorkers felt more or less stranded at the Hilton. There was no itinerary for us and also Kingston is not the friendliest place to be wandering around when you don't know what you're doing. But I was one of the few lucky people who got to leave the compound and see the beach and eat delicious local food thanks to Kelly Rae and her crew, who were doing location scouting for Maxim. We drove out to a place called Hellshire Beach and had lunch at the local institution Prendy's. We ate fresh-caught fish, deep-fried and steamed with vegetable stew and a Jamaican staple called "festival," which is fried cornmeal dough. When you first arrive at the beach, it just looks like a crumbling shanty town, but all the little huts are fish joints for the hungry beach-goers and their walls are painted with the most amazing murals inside and out.
After filling up our bellies we drove to another beach ten minutes away called Fort Clarence. Here we each had to pay 150 Jamaican dollars ($2) to get in, but it was well worth it. This beach was more secluded with hardly anyone there. The water was divine -- like a giant heated pool. After splashing around for a bit and having the greatest time, we headed back to the Hilton at sunset.

Bar of the Week: International Bar
By Elizabeth Thompson

While East Village community activists protesting the Bowery's recent development screamed "Die hard yuppie scum!" at those unlucky enough to be sitting outside of Bowery Wine Company last Friday evening, the nearby, and recently resurrected, International Bar was open for its second weekend since closing in 2005. So maybe there's hope between Delancey and 14th Street after all. Things aren't quite as scuzzy as they once were at this snug spot on First Avenue. Proprietors Shawn Dahl and Molly Fitch have added sinks to the renovated bathrooms; the gold leaf lettering arched across the front window has been restored, and the worn formica counter, gutted by a landlord during the space's three-year vacancy, was replaced by a mahogany bar salvaged from an Upper East Side bar that changed ownership. But former regulars can count on some familiar scenery: A portrait of former owner Michael Petruno, who died in 2002, is still hung on the wall among new décor like velvet paintings and a vintage poster for a movie called Brides of Dracula. The jukebox selection is still as eclectic as its predecessor's. Dahl is a former Rolling Stone editor, Fitch is a musician, and although it was skipping the night we visited and a satellite radio station was piped in, discs include The Shaggs, The Carter Family Band, Howlin' Wolf, Nina Simone and Bad Brains with many, many, many, others to pick from. The menu also remains straightforward. Mixed drinks are split between a house and call list, ($4 and $6 respectively), Yuengling, Guinness, Stella, and Blue Moon drafts, all $4-$5, have been added to the former bottles-only lineup, and cans of Schaefer, the one beer to have when you're having more than one, are $2. You'll definitely want to stay for two.

Beauty School: Missoni Purse Sprays
By Carol Lee

The house of Missoni is of course known for their luxury knitwear but they also make a fabulous line of beauty products. If you're already a fan of their Italian-Riviera-inspired eau de parfum series, you'll be delighted by the new Missoni Purse Sprays. Like most indulgent treats, the packaging just kills. These cuties come in "gold" atomizers the size of a lipstick, adorned with the signature Missoni muliti-color tassels, and a refill bottle. Both the original and acqua are flowery and sweet -- acqua slightly less so, so if you're more of a cologne type this will make a pretty present for someone who does. Grade: A-
Missoni Eau de Parfum Purse Spray $70; Missoni acqua Purse Spray $60. Both available at Nordstrom in July.

Peter Davis' Status Update: BARRETTE Is Delicious Disco Decadence
By Peter Davis

You absolutely must check out Rembrant Grant and Sophia Berlin of BARRETTE, the trashy euro-techno pop phenomenon, at the Glasslands Gallery’s “Electric Wilderness Party,” on Wednesday June 25th at 8 p.m. Think St. Tropez’s Les Caves du Roy meets Avenue A’s Pyramid Club. “BARRETTE was conceived on the dance floor of Studio 54 and born of a shared love for all things glittering, hard and golden,” Rembrant tells me. There’s even going to be a group participation Electric Slide boogie-down. Glitter included.

Meet Fashion Icon Filippa Berg
By Julia Frakes

Julia Frakes: For readers unfamiliar with your work, would you mind describing what you do a bit?
Filippa Berg: My job is being the fashion editor of a free Stockholm magazine called iCITY. But I do various things on the side, mostly styling. Sometimes I model, talk on the radio and I've been in some short movies. Recently I was the hostess of Go-See TV during Stockholm Fashion Week. I know some people in the industry here [in Sweden] and they often call me when they need help with different things and I'm glad to help out!
JF: What was your childhood like?
FB: Happy! I spent most of my time backpacking with my parents. We lived on beaches in Greece and took trains through Europe and the north of Africa. It was exciting. I didn't spend much time with other kids, though; I learned to play with myself. And I really didn't like school at all.
JF: Who is your favorite new Swedish designer?
FB: Personally I rarely buy new clothes, but really like what the designer Ann-Sofie Back is doing. She is truly an inventor!

By Caroline Torem Craig
The Frank Gehry-designed IAC Building in way, way, West Chelsea reminded me of a gigantic Chinese paper lantern, but then again, things often remind me of PAPER! The BVLGARI Diagano watch reminds me that I would like to have one instead of my tired old Rolex! Spotted: Kristian Laliberte, with ten minutes left till his birthday when I left him partying with the Blackbook folks… Vogue intern/Ranger Sean Avery, with Derek Blasberg in tow... Amy Sacco, who only had to walk around the corner from her boites to attend... And Melissa Berkelhammer, who said she checks out “About Last Night…” which made us happy.

This Week in Art Openings: Yves Marchand + Romain Meffre, Wendy White and Peter Belyi
By Mary Logan Barmeyer
Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, “Contemporary Ruins”
We all love an abandoned, decrepit old building -- beautiful, nostalgic, romantic, melancholic, completely spooky and full of ghosts -- and that's the subject of this photo exhibit by the French duo Marchand and Meffre. The two urban archaeologists have been traveling much of Europe and the U.S. for the vanishing evidence of the "genocide architectural," photographing concert halls with the seats ripped out, majestic rooms with pianos overturned, industrial buildings gone rusty, sturdy buildings reduced to tangles of steel beams, and witchy castle-like residences with windows boarded up and turrets caving in. While you may not see ghosts, we're guessing you'll get the chills.
Point of View, 638 W. 28th St., (212) 967-3936. Opening reception June 19, 6-9 p.m. Through July 19.
Wendy White, "Autokennel"
Marry the rough action of a sporting event and the flavor of an urban rock concert and you have Wendy White’s latest painting exhibition. With florescent acrylics and black spray paint -- and a softball and some foam soccer balls -- she creates the texture of busy graffiti and colorful painterly abstraction. The idea is a nod to the “bombardment” of the everyday.
Leo Koenig Inc., 545 W. 23rd St., (212) 334-9255. Opening reception June 20, 6-8 p.m. Through August 1.
Peter Belyi, "Pinocchio’s Library"
This all-wood exhibition stands for disillusionment with the past and hope for the future, with Pinocchio, the ultimate seeker of grandiose dreams, as the protagonist. This Russian-born artist has created a wooden library in honor of the little mis-led wooden puppet, with bookshelf after bookshelf -- a seemingly utopian paradise of books. Your dreams will be thwarted at once by the sturdy, un-openable “books,” but you’re supposed to leave with the feeling that still one day, you’ll be a real boy.
Daneyal Mahmood Gallery, 511 W. 25th St., (212) 675-2966. Opening reception June 19, 6–8 p.m. Through July 31.

Caribbean Fashion Week: Island Vibe on the Runway, Pt. 2
By Carol Lee

With 15 designers showing per night for three nights it was a downpour of madcap creativity on the runway during Caribbean Fashion Week. The shows would keep going late into the night and on the last night the final designer took a bow close to 2 a.m. Actress Vanessa A. Williams walked in almost every other show. Eve's "Fetish" line fell short of wowing the crowd which is too bad. For a pinch of randomness Deborah Roberts of ABC's 20/20 was in the audience laughing it up with actress Nia Long.

R.I.P. Cyd Charisse
By Ann Magnuson
Even in the remote mountains of West Virginia we eventually hear the news and this news is sad indeed. Cyd Charisse, one of the most golden of the golden gals from Hollywood's Golden Age, passed away yesterday morning. This amazing dancer and star of yesteryear will thankfully live forever in movies like Singin' in the Rain. Here she is with Gene Kelly in what might be my favorite slice of celluloid. This number continues to amaze and I get goosebumps every time I see it (and I've seen it HUNDREDS of times!) Rest in peace Cyd. You were a SUPERSTAR (with SUPER STELLAR GAMS!!!!)

About Last Night... The Empire Hotel Rooftop Grand Opening
By Caroline Torem Craig
They had us at “hello” with their deviled eggs in their own little egg cups! That and the massive Empire Hotel sign we could literally reach out and touch! PAPER had a great little group “representing” at Jeffrey and Linda Chodorow’s Empire Rooftop opening, and it was fun checking out the very diverse group of guests. There was Real Housewife of New York City Bethenny Frankel, the only blonde, blue-eyed, handsome gossip columnist we know, Ben Widdicomb, and pet expert, soon to be loved and hated as one of the judges on Greatest American Dog, Wendy Diamond. Just before leaving, I chatted with Taryn Manning, Boomkat singer and actress (Hustle and Flow), who should have a banner year in ’09 with four films now in post-production. She was wearing a cute little Madison Marcus number and told PAPER, “I’m looking forward to doing nothing in front of a pool or beach this summer with nobody except my girlfriends.”

Michelle Obama's Impeccable Style
By Kim Hastreiter

I was in heaven when I saw that Michelle Obama chose to wear Isabel Toledo the other night to the Obama benefit hosted by Anna Wintour and Calvin Klein... Thanks to my friend Ikram, whose fabulous Chicago store (of the same name) is one of Obama's favorite spots, Michelle was not only decked out in Isabel Toledo but was wearing a Tom Binns necklace as well. I mean, how hot is that?
I really think Michelle needs to head over to Isaac Mizrahi and grab that simple, chic, red sequinned gown from his last show for one of her inaugural looks (see above). I also bet she would look amazing in Mizrahi's new line for Liz Claiborne. She's really is looking more and more gorgeous as the days pass. She can do WONDERS for American fashion, from high to mass. We are talking rock star here. The frenzy is just beginning. She looks amazing in Isabel Toledo but you can see her looking amazing (and comfy) in a Go International dress from Target?! I can just imagine President Obama's first official trip to Europe and can you imagine Paris? He will have to borrow JFK's line about being the "husband of Jackie Kennedy." It's all very exciting.

By Alexis Swerdloff

1. Starting tomorrow, Greg K (of Misshapes fame) and Leslie Arfin (of VICE and Dear Diary fame) are teaming up to host a regular Thursday night 1990's-themed party at Bowery Electric called LOSER. Says Leslie in an email: "Yes that includes Rap. It includes Alternative and Brit-Pop and slow songs and fast songs. It includes NOFX and Deee Lite and Neutral Milk Hotel and Color Me Badd. Everything from 1990 to 1999, all sandwiched into one awesome night."
1. Little known fact: Apparently United Bamboo did a small (but very cute!) collection for Uniqlo. (via Style Bubble)
2. Islands and Ra Ra Riot have been added to the already stellar Siren Fest roster, joining the likes of Stephen Malkmus, Broken Social Scene and Beach House.
3. The Crayola 64 box turns 50 this summer. When it debuted (on the Captain Kangaroo Show), the box cost $1.99. Fifty years later, it costs $5. Not a bad deal!

Reality Bites: Jersey from A Shot at Love 2 With Tila Tequila
By Emily Warman
Last week, Tila Tequila told Jay “Jersey” Elrich to go back to Jersey. Well, he has no problem with that. Jay, 22, a 'transportation executive' from Paramus, NJ was the fourth runner up in the quest to win Tila's bi-curious heart on MTV’s A Shot at Love 2 With Tila Tequila . Along the way he donned a leather thong, almost got into a couple fights and watched his mom and step-mom kiss, but he never stopped reppin' the 201. Jay talks with us about his wild and crazy lifestyle, on and off the show.
Emily Warman: You made it very clear you were from Jersey on the show. What should everyone know about Jersey, and you?
Jay 'Jersey' Elrich: Jersey is the party place to be, and that's why I am the way I am. We're either an hour or 40 minutes from the shore, and 10 or 15 minutes from the city. Or you're partying in the Jersey area where the girls are hot and everybody looks hot. I love it here.
EW: What are your summer plans? Going down to the shore?
JE: Yeah I'll be down the shore a lot, hit some up Yankee games. Just having fun you know, doin' my thing. I work too. Let's get the record clear: I'm not a cab driver, or a limo driver. I help run my step-dad's limo company, and I make a lot more money than people think. People assume I don't work hard, but I do.

Oliving It Up With Il Buco's Donna Lennard at the NYC Food Film Festival
By Sara Davis

La Raccolta (The Harvest) is a short documentary that explores the olive oil making process in a small community in Umbria which is deeply proud of its distinctly flavorful oil. The film introduces us to four adorably old, incredibly passionate olive-pickers, all of whom are old hands at the harvest. Chances are you will feel palpably concerned for these octogenarians as they climb flimsy ladders to reach the tops of the incredibly picturesque trees. Filmmaker Donna Lennard is otherwise known to New York as the owner of popular downtown restaurant il Buco. Her film premieres at the NYC Food Film Festival tonight.
Sara Davis: Are you Italian? Or you just speak Italian?
Donna Lennard: Not at all, I just speak Italian. And you know, I lived with an Italian man for ten years, I’ve spent a lot of time in Italy, and I have an Italian restaurant…
SD: Right. So, historically what was your relationship with olive oil?
DL: Before the film?
SD: Yeah, when you were growing up.
DL: I think growing up I had no idea about olive oil.
SD: Really?
DL: Yes, when I was growing up it was like… safflower oil in the kitchen.

Restaurant of the Week: Wildwood Barbecue
By Kathleen Squires

It's raining men at this Texas-styled barbecue barn. A typhoon of testosterone occupies nearly every wood-topped table in the house. Maybe it's the smell of the smoking pit pervading the wood-beamed room that draws them in like zombies who must… eat… meat. Or maybe it's the lure of the powerhouse team behind it. B.R. Guest (Dos Caminos, Blue Water Grill, Fiamma, Primehouse, etc. etc. etc) has enlisted "Big Lou" Elrose, formerly of Hill Country, to mind the smoker out back, which is at its best when turning out the combo "pit plates." The "best of the best" ($24.50) hits the mark with the tender slow-smoked brisket and sweetly smoky pulled pork, though the half chicken was moisture-challenged. The rib sampler ($28.95) is more consistent with a generous pair of pork bones -- spare and baby back -- both easy on the fat and big on meatiness. Everything benefits from Big Lou's special "rib dust," an aromatic combo of salt, brown and turbinado sugar, paprika, black, white and cayenne pepper, and onion, garlic and ancho chili powders. Not a meat eater? You could make a meal of the sides, like crispy, beer-battered onion rings ($6.95) or the vegetarian low country chili ($9) with smoked tofu, three beans, hot peppers and corn bread croutons. Otherwise, there's always the unlimited buffet of beefcake within reach.

Caribbean Fashion Week: Island Vibe on the Runway Pt. 1
By Carol Lee

The island vibe was fully in effect on the runway. The collection after collection of clothes that paraded down the catwalk embodied a wide spectrum of influences from elegant church lady to proud Rasta girl to urban sex-pot. Minka, one of the standouts, is a Jamaican queen of crochet who knits everything from bikinis to dresses. And the more traditional looking garbs by Mutamba, another Jamaican, are made for powerhouse ladies like Lauren Hill and Erykah Badu. All around, bright neon colors were in full bloom as well as the eye-popping prints. The mood shifted constantly among a dozen or so designers who showed each night. Sexy, sleazy and soulful, every outfit was channeling some kind of voodoo, drama, carnival and ghetto fabulosity. What a spectacle!

The news here is that Don Cornelius, for 35 years the driving force behind one of the best music shows ever produced for TV has sold the Soul Train franchise. God knows what they'll do with an updated version, but the old shows never wear on me. The music, the fly looks, def defying dance moves, the hottest honeys and homeboys! What more could you ask for? This montage of the Soul Train Dancers could go on forever. Look for Rosie Perez in the mix.

Arias With a Twist is the punningly inviting title of a brand new show, created by two modern masters of entertainment: puppeteer/director Basil Twist and singer/performer extraordinaire Joey Arias, both of whom are renowned and revered all over the globe. Ten years ago Twist debuted Symphonie Fantastique, a surreal puppet show in a tank of water, and since then he has worked all over, extending the limits of puppetry magic. Arias, a downtown drag diva that defined the genre, has spent the past six years as the emcee “Mistress of Seduction” in Cirque du Soleil’s still-running Zumanity spectacle in Las Vegas. I spoke with Arias, a long-time friend, and a PAPER family member from the very beginning about his latest endeavor. (Note: Joey is a wonderfully effervescent personality, who talks very fast, and often uses his own style of grammar and sentence structure, and I apologize if I didn’t accurately get everything he said.)
Tom Murrin: What crazy madness have you two creative geniuses concocted for us?
Joey Arias: Basil is the master of a-lot-going-on and the puppetry. He likes excess and magic, and we both merge together in fantasy.
TM: I’m still amazed that you worked six years straight in Vegas. What a gig!
JA: Yes, it’s been six years since I’ve performed in NYC. This is my return to performing in New York. After Cirque, I wanted to upgrade, but I still want to be in the mix with everybody. Luckily I made a lot of money these past six years, so I don’t have to work every night in every club in town.

PIerre Casiraghi and Beatrice Borromeo: Could It Be Love?
By Mickey Boardman

Two of Mr. Mickey's favorite young Euristocrats seem to be hooking up. Pierre Casiraghi (Mr. Mickey drools even typing his name) and Beatrice Borromeo are both at university in Milan and seem to be getting cozy. Beatrice's sister is married to John Elkann, brother of dreamboat Lapo Elkann.

Simon, King of the Witches!
By Dennis Dermody
Some movies are deserving of cult status. Simon, King of the Witches, out on DVD next week, is definitely one of them -- and then some. This oddball 1971 film is about a warlock named Simon (Andrew Prine) who lives in a storm drain and is dragged into the spotlight by a young hustler (George Paulsin) and egged on into using his evil powers against a disbeliever, which ends up coming back to haunt him. Set during the hippie/love/cult era, Prine makes a shambling, long-haired, hipster warlock. Warhol favorite Ultra Violet shows up later as a witch too in this psychedelic, strange film. Directed by Bruce Kessler (The Gay Deceivers), Prine himself talks about the making of the film in a revealing featurette. He claims the screenwriter was a warlock who had his own coven. Simon is a bizarre film because it doesn’t fit into any category -- and that’s part of its great charm. And Prine really is fabulous as Simon. He makes you believe all the nuttiness. The DVD quality is also extraordinary. I could finally throw away my old VHS. It’s even got nine extra minutes of footage. And more Simon, King of the Witches is just fine with me!

Peter Davis' Status Update: Earnest Sewn Is Hamptons-Bound
By Peter Davis

One can never have enough denim. Thank god Earnest Sewn is opening an outpost this Thursday in Southampton at 53c Jobs Lane. The 1300-square-foot space stocks all the ES lines plus they’ll be a section in the back for discounted stuff. Earnest Sewn adds edge to the pink and green wardrobe of Southampton’s wobbly WASPs. “The great thing about classic blue jeans is that they fit into every wardrobe from prepster to hipster,” says Earnest Sewn’s super-stylish Eleanor Ylvisaker.

Cynthia Rowley's Resort Collection!
By Mickey Boardman
One of our favorite designers Cynthia Rowley showed her resort collection last week and she had the perfect setting: her own backyard! Personally we think Cynthia's clothes look best when Cynthia herself is wearing them but they were also adorable on the models lounging around her swimming pool. Check out the girl with the Cabana hat -- talk about not needing sunblock!

Caribbean Fashion Week: Emancipation Park
By Carol Lee

Here's an impressive sculpture fountain called "Redemption Song" at the gate of the Emancipation Park in Kingston. Rumor has it that some locals complain it's not big enough. Inside, there are these "rock" speakers (below) stationed all over the park in which Bob Marley and the Wailers is being piped through all day.

Peter Davis' Status Update: La La Land Loves Leven
By Peter Davis

My fave teen starlet/socialite, Leven Rambin is moving to the Left Coast this Thursday to shoot the next season of the Terminator TV series. Leven is playing Reilly, a danger-seeking rebel chick that befriends John Connor. “I hope everyone watches me kick butt and do kick-ass stunts and play something besides a drunk diva or be a soap star,” Leven, who is most famous for being on All My Children, told me.

Broadway's Biggest Night
By Whitney Spaner
Last night was the 62nd Annual Tony Awards and it was a hard year to predict winners making for an interesting evening with a few surprises. The big winners were Lincoln Center’s revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, the Washington Heights tribute In the Heights, August: Osage County and Boeing-Boeing. Paulo Szot the opera singer turned musical theater star (who is amazingly sexy and had me gasping for air as he gave his speech in a Brazilian accent) won Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role as Emile de Becque in South Pacific which beat out Gypsy for the Best Revival of a Musical despite the fact that Gypsy picked up all the other acting categories -- most notably Patti LuPone who plays the legendary role of Mama Rose. She had a lot to live up to with two out of the four previous Mama Roses winning the Tony before her excluding Bernadette Peters and the original Ethel Merman. Patti’s speech was amazing and channelled her inner Mama Rose when she yelled “turn that off it’s been 29 years!” when the “wrap it up” music started playing, referring to the last time she won a Tony for her role as Evita.

Caribbean Fashion Week: Models Are Gorgeous. Duh!
By Carol Lee

The models here are super-stunning and have the sickest bodies. These girls are so skinny with the longest limbs ever yet they're so bouncy and curvaceous with killer bootays! A lot of Jamaican models were flown in from New York for the CFW. Some of them are way big-time like Jaunel McKenzie, Sunna Gottshalk, Oraine Barrett and a couple of America's Next Top Model contestants. Here are some backstage shots of them eating, getting hair and makeup done, and just waiting around.

Eight Items or Less: Aziz Ansari's Office-bound, Heather Mills' Perry-Street-Bound and Love As Laughter's Beauty-Bar-Bound
By Alexis Swerdloff

1. Aziz Ansari, who we’ve been gushing about since 2005, is set to star in the much anticipated Office spin-off.
2. Heather Mills is reportedly moving into Richard Meier’s see-through 173 Perry Street. So when you're stuck in traffic on the West Side Highway, take a peek!
3. On August 8, to celebrate the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics, Howard St. (and Olympic-themed) boutique Opening Ceremony will be open for 72 hours -- straight! Should be ridiculous and amazing.
4. Former PAPER cover girl Charlotte Gainsbourg is starring in Balenciaga’s fall/winter campaign. And here's a little preview... (via WWD)

5. Love As Laughter, the brainchild of musical genius Sam Jayne, is playing “unplugged” next Tuesday at Beauty Bar (231 E. 14th St.) from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. in celebration of their new album Holy.
6. It's a little Sufjan-y, but Christian Kiefer, Matthew Gerken and Jefferson Pitcher have recorded an album featuring 43 songs, one for each past and present President of the United States. Folks like Bill Callahan (of Smog), Jamie Stewart (of Xiu Xiu), Califone, Marla Hanson and James Jackson Toth (aka Wooden Wand) lend their vocal stylings to the record. The album, titled "Of Great & Mortal Men: 43 Songs For 43 Presidencies," is out on Sept. 9 and they plan to write a song about our 44th President (fingers crossed!!!), and releasing it as a download, in November.

Caribbean Fashion Week: Shakad & Luna Design
By Carol Lee

Caribbean Fashion Week took place at Kingston's National Indoor Sports Center. It's a big gymnasium with bleachers all around. The designers set up booths where they were showcasing and selling their goods. There was an ample amount of time to look around, sample different sponsored-cocktails and mingle with the crowd before the shows got underway. My favorite booths were Shakad and Luna Design. Shakad is a mother-daughter design team -- mom makes fabrics the traditional African way and daughter designs. Luna (from Barbados) makes these chunky and colorful accessories made with what they call vegetable ivory or corozo. It's a type of a nut.

Paki-Splatter: Hell's Ground!
By Dennis Dermody

Hell’s Ground, the first gory horror movie from Pakistan is coming out on DVD, and it's an enjoyable if familiar tale of a group of friends who lie to their parents so they can pile into a garishly-painted van and drive to a rock concert. Along the way they run into mutating villagers, infected by contaminated water, who attack the van. Then they pick up a weird hitchhiker who’s carrying a dismembered head in his satchel. And if that isn’t enough they run out of gas and get attacked by a weird figure wearing a blood-spattered burkha swinging a medieval-looking spiked ball on a chain. Director Omar Ali Khan joyously borrows from scores of American horror classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead, but there’s still a delightfully offbeat foreignness to the Paki-splatter that makes for gruesome good cheer.

About Last Night... The Tony Awards
By Caroline Torem Craig
BAD!
I polled the photographers on the red carpet to see who they came out for and it was a unanimous "Whoopi Goldberg." Much moaning and groaning ensued when we discovered that she would NOT be walking down the red carpet.
GOOD!
Fans and media roared with choked up emotion to see Liza Minnelli looking so fit, trim and strong.
GOOD!
America's sweetheart Brooke Shields!
BAD!
No red carpet sighting of Mama Rose aka Patti LuPone
GOOD!
Gorgeous gowns by Oscar de la Renta, Reem Accra, Calvin Klein, Pamela Roland and Prada
The photographers' press room was a happy-go-lucky silly bunch -- everyone had one thing in mind for the winners: "Please kiss the Tony!"

Caribbean Fashion Week: The Making of the Runway
By Carol Lee

Friday night was the first night of runway shows. They were scheduled to begin at 7 but everyone knew they wouldn't because fashion shows almost always start late and Jamaica would be no exception. But things got a little surreal when at 9 they were still building the runway. Many of the front row people got high off of the cement glue the workers used to put down the white boards. Not the most fun way to kill time.
