Film Buffs and Fashionistas Unite In London
By Zandile Blay
The Fashion in Film Festival celebrated its second year with a party in London's SoHo neighborhood last Thursday night. The event attracted a surprising mix of celebrities, fashion types, film buffs… and Kelly Osbourne! Marketa Uhlirova, co-founder of the festival, told me a bit about the history of the event. "About four years ago, I was at the Horse Hospital [a Soho House style clubhouse for London creatives] and Roger Burton -- who started the Horse Hospital -- and I were watching a movie called Who Are You Polly Magoo," Uhlirova explains. "We had two bootleg versions of the film and couldn't really work out exactly what was going on, but the movie seemed stunning. We thought it would be really nice to do something on fashion and film, so Roger said, 'Why don't you do a series on Fashion and Film for the Horse Hospital?'" Enter her close friend Christel Tsilibaris who along with Uhlirova is co-founder of the event. Several years later, Uhlirova, Tsilibaris and Burton have transformed this festival into a respected and lauded biennial event. It's traveled to major cities all over the world and after a brief visit to New York last year, is set to return in a few months. "We don't know if it will be in the winter or fall, but it will definitely be in New York," said Tsilibaris. "It will be at the Museum of the Moving Image and we are working with a fantastic team of board of directors.”
