Shop of the Week: And Then Some
By Rebecca Prusinowski
With tinted windows emanating a faint bronze glow and no sign to speak of, And Then Some in Boerum Hill is a discreet retail presence. Step inside the Bond Street shop, however, and you’re transported to a tiny galaxy of fashion, art, and culture. The 400-square-foot space is painted totally black, so that the clothing and assorted collectibles within the store really catch your eye.
After several years designing and working in a Bushwick studio space, owner Alex Eagleton decided to transition his business to a street level shop. He can now showcase and sell his apparel without adhering to the seasonal restrictions of most retailers, and to top it off, he can include his vast rolodex of artist/designer friends, too. The store’s single rack of clothing currently features a mix of tees, jeans, jackets and oversized hoodies in a color palette narrowed mostly to black, white and purple. Tees from thesamenicepeople, the house label, are understated and comfy -- made of organic cotton, cashmere or silk-cotton blends. Daniel Palillo’s black and white tees -- silk-screened or stitched with ominous facial expressions -- are rather striking. But the boldest pieces at the moment are the virus prints from Kling by Kling, a collection of jumbo unisex sweatshirts and tees decorated with funky-patterns that, upon closer examination, happen to be amplified viral formations.
Beyond the menswear clothing and a small selection of denim and shoes, And Then Some also sells a smattering of accessories, artwork and perfumes. There’s a stack of Tony Arcabascio’s short story compilation, Now You Know, positioned next to hand-stitched cotton totes from Prints Please by Gerlan Jeans (easily the “green” trend’s coolest carry-all bags). Curious and playful crocheted creatures by Kirsten Deirup are displayed alongside gold necklaces with chunky pendants by Tooth of a Lion. The natural colognes and perfumes by D.S. & Durga that the store carries are extraordinary. The sublime scents, like Cowboy Grass and Siberian Jasmine, are all handmade, and Spanish Fly is a store-exclusive fragrance co-created by Eagleton. Finally, a listening station was set up so that friends of the shop could have an outlet for their musical creations, too.
Prices range between $80-800, and most of what you’ll find in the store is available nowhere else. So enter Brooklyn’s newest retail microcosm and indulge your senses with the sights, smells and sounds of And Then Some.
