What Was Sean John Thinking?
By Kim Hastreiter

Fashion marathon week ended with a "wha?" for me on Friday. I was looking forward all week to Sean John (the next to last show right before Marc Jacobs), but when the first model hit the catwalk I couldn't believe what I saw. Now, you have to realize that I adore Sean John's work and his shows have been among my all time favorite men's shows. His style and taste have always been incredible, sharp, slick, high end, and his wonderful casting done by my friend Bethann Hardison is usually worth the show itself. But this time he sent out the weirdest, goofiest collection of men's clothes I have seen in a long, long time. I was so disappointed. Sort of fashion victim stuff. It could not have come from Sean Combs himself, who I guarantee would never be caught dead wearing a jacket cropped above the waist with a glitter-tassled wool and fur scarf. Did he just outsource this collection? Sean John has the potential to be the #1 menswear designer in America. I want him back!!!! Plus, I have to ask a question. Why is Ron Burkle the new BFF of Zac Posen and Sean Combs and sitting in front row of both shows? (see photo from style.com) Is he their business partner or something? Such an odd combo.

Yes.

Kim - thanks for your honest and refreshing coverage of the Sean John AW08 show.
To answer your question, yes. Ron Burkle owns an equity stake in Sean John (and by proxy, Zac Posen) via his holding company Yucaipa.

1st off, Sean Combs is no where near being a designer. He doesn't sit there designing a line, that is what his designers and merchandisers and rest of staff is for. Just because he's in the same building as the Sean John Mens division, doesn't make him a designer. It's his name and nothing else. he may say what he wants it to look like, but the rest is up to the design team. After that, he says yes or no to concepts/designs. But that's it! That is why he has creative directors, merchadisers, and designers. So, blame them for the crappy line! AND stop calling P.Diddy a designer. It's insulting to those of us who actually are!

I wouldn't blame sean john's designers for the line. I'd blame Puffy for imposing his taste on those poor fools.
The sorriest part of all this is the teenage boys who'll make their parents buy them cropped Sean John blazers.
