May The Muses of Xanadu Visit You in '08!
By Ann Magnuson
Gotta love those long-limbed dancers! (Leg warmers notwithstanding.) I remember seeing this movie when it played at the legendary St. Mark's Cinema ( closed to make way for, you guessed it, The Gap.) It was a midnight show and packed. We laughed our ironic butts off -- just like folks are supposedly doing at the camp revival on Broadway now. Irony aside, there is something very life-affirming about this clip. Good for beginning the New Year! May you all be inspired by your favorite muse all during 2008! (I just hope my muse can dance better than Olivia Newton-John, fetching though she may be... especially on those roller skates.)

Have you seen the Broadway show, Ann? My face hurt afterwards from laughing and smiling so much.
Also, the soundtrack to the movie was the first album I ever became totally and completely obsessed with. My sister and I used to jump around our living room singing along with Olivia and Jeff Lynne and The Tubes till we became hoarse.
Happy almost birthday!

Saw Olivia do "Xanadu" at her concert in Times Square a couple of years ago and she rocked, her voice was good and she's such a sweetie and a good performer. Still haven't seen the Broadway version. My friend Michael X used to go see the film on acid!

Rob, I haven't seen the Broadway show but I believe Douglas Carter Beane is behind it and he sure knows how to make 'em laff!
Barkley, WOW, your friend Michael is cracked! Xanadu on acid is too heavy even for this old hippie!
I will admit to liking Olivia's hit MAGIC. I think I sang it VERY out of tune at the Mudd Club one night, thanks to too much cheap champagne and an barely competant house band.

We used to rollerskate around my boyfriend's loft to it (next door to the Limelight and across from s.n.a.f.u.). The songs are fun.

i went to the broadway show just to see Jackie Hoffman & Mary Testa, but i really did end up enjoying the whole show...even tearing up a couple of times!
its much cleverer than one would think & it has too much heart to write off as "camp".
(that said, it should have stayed as an off-broadway show...& i dont mean that as an insult!)
here is my illustration of the show!
