L.A. Woman

Phranc's Art Show at CUE in NYC (With Free Hootenanny with Phranc & Ann!)

By Ann Magnuson

cueI am so happy to report that the flu I had for one terrifying week has abated and I will be winging my way east to support PHRANC at her first New York solo art show this Thursday Dec. 6 at the CUE Foundation gallery in fabulous Chelsea! (There must be one or two of you who aren't going to Miami!) CUE asked me to be one of their two guest curators for the month of December and I could think of no better artist to invite than PHRANC! (Read all about Phranc, her art and the show in my L.A. Woman column in the December issue of PAPER!)

See the fabulous and whimsical and socially relevant 3-D art from the Cardboard Cobbler, a.k.a. The Jewish Lesbian Folk Singer, a.k.a Tupperware Lady Legend, a.k.a All Around Great Gal, a.k.a Phranc!

The opening is this Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. The next night, Friday December 7th, there will be a party and free Performance/Hootenanny with both myself and Phranc (See details about show below). Show begins at 6:30. CUE is at 511 West 25th Street on the ground floor. Click here for more info.

Folk Songs with Ann and Phranc: Songs That Speak to Now and Then

Ann Magnuson and Phranc put the Hoot in Hootenanny as they share the stage -- and one acoustic guitar -- performing classic tunes of their own making.

Why waste money feeding the big-money art conglomorates at the Miami Basel Art Fair when you can stay in New York and GET REAL with three chords and the truth! Say goodbye to overpriced Cosmopolitans, deep-fried goat cheese canapes and $900-a-night hotel rooms and stick it to The Man while roasting marshmellows around our cracklin', flame-retardant campfire!

First 50 people arriving in denim will recieve free s'mores!!!

Kick off those painful high heels and pull up a flannel blanket in a safe, Kumbaya-free zone as Ann and Phranc serenade you with songs from their respective ouevres. Ghost stories! Protest songs! Odes to Billy Joes and Woody Guthrie sing-a-longs brought to you in one life-lovin' jamboree!

Don't resist! You know you've strayed too long. Throw off the shackles of those status-whipped, luxury-porn desires fueled by our inane, war-denying celebrity culture and get back down to basics with Phranc and Ann. And sing. Sing a song.

Folk music.

For just plain folks.

Who know deep down they are very, very special.

Because they live in New York City.

In other words - YOU!

Even if you are just visiting from out of town.

Like me.

Be There.

Hey Ann,

Sorry to bring this up at this point,
But remember Club 57?

You always said we were renting from A Polish Church..

I've been passing by every so and so for the last 30 years, and really nothing much has changed. I peek in and see the same place we were so crazy!!

I have a Polish boyfriend now, and he doesn't buy the whole Polish Church thing. It really doesn't look like a Polish Church, was it the Illuminati?

He was 7 when we had the first Monster Movie Club!

I think the same wierd iconocraphy is still up on the facade.
Didn't they own Irving Plaza too?

Help me!

I must rest in Peace.

I love John Mc Loughlin!

I wish she'd write the story of Club 57 and make a film of it. Who is still around from back then? I only went once to a rockabilly night, they showed an early B&W rock movie.

Ann shouldn't write a story - she should write a whole book.

Ann - could you please pen your life story some time soon?

XO

PS - I own Tupperware that's been autographed by Phranc.

I'm so sorry.

John visits me every now and then.

So many crazy questions!

Yesterday was so crazy today because of him!

I love the videos about West Virginia. It's so sick! I know you love that place.

If Robin Byrd can write her memoirs, so can you!

Thanks to everyone who came to CUE! It was a huge success and we had a blast at the performance! I was so happy to see so many fab folks who opted not to go to the Miami Basel Art Fair! (the really cool people stayed in town to see Phranc, don'tcha know?!) For those who haven't seen the show drop by 511 W. 25th St. The show will be up until Jan. 26!

Tammi- WOW! Nice to hear from you after all these years. What happened to "Tina"? Yes, I miss John M. too! And contrary to what it looks like there IS a church on the second floor at 57 St. Mark's Place! I know because I've seen them do services in there (albeit a long time ago) and we also snuck in to shoot a video there back around 1981. Very opulent inside!

And to Rob and Barkley - yeah, gotta write that book. But YEESH - writing is HARD - and lonely being such a solitary task. But it must be done and 2008 is when we shall begin (of course I said that in 1998 too). Kenny Scharf and I wrote a behemoth script about our lives during those days but it's so insane and epic (a cast of out-of-control thousands!) that it would have to be an HBO series (and they weren't interested - philistines!). As we were writing it I kept repeating to Kenny "This is a book. This is a book". So yeah......the time has come.

But am I really ready to reveal all???????????????
