GIVE A SHOUT TO WORD UP! wordup@papermag.com

L.A. Woman

Funny Face Turns 50!

By Ann Magnuson

Because Mr. Mickey is in Paris right now for Fashion Week and because my Dad is going there this Thursday to celebrate his 80th birthday (Happy B-Day Dad!) and because there was an article in this Sunday's IMAGE section in the L.A. Times about this fabulous movie turning 50 this week... I give you the infamous fashion shoot sequence from Funny Face. ("The musical that dares to rhyme Sartre with Montmartre") Never have the worlds of fashion and cinema been so perfectly enmeshed (well, there IS The Eyes of Laura Mar but that's later and a tad more nafarious -- just like the era it's set in!). But this 1957 classic, ladies and germs, is why little girls grow up to be frustrated actresses. And why little boys come out of the closet.

My only complaint is that, once again, we have a young ingenue paired up with an old geezer. I love Fred Astaire but he was 30 years older than his ravishing young co-star Audrey Hepburn at the time! I was similarly creeped out when Bogart wooed Audrey in Sabrina... which I actually didn't see until I was in my 20s. But I was intuitively creeped out as a kid watching Rex Harrison get Audrey in My Fair Lady. I could not for the life of me understand why she didn't go for that young handsome guy Freddie who walked down the street where she lived! (You can sing along with him here.) I also got super creeped out watching Woody Allen slobber over Diane Keaton in Sleeper. No one had told me yet....)

Anyway, enjoy Hepburn in Givenchy in Paris! Mais oui!

Sorry ann ....sometimes older men and younger women just work out...I know I want to have that certain younger woman in my life some day...see for men its that we finally are at an age to fully understand the mind of a young woman ...now we can be with them and not get hurt by their irrational acts...we can be a mentor in fact..but then again I have a thinG for older women myself at this point so I can learn then use that knowledge in my older years...I only wish I could meet adreinne Barbeau or Escape from newyork and Swampthing fame .....she never looked better... ;)
