L.A. Woman

Phil Spector Buys Freedom, World Shrugs, "Lana Who?"

By Ann Magnuson

phil spector

Sure pays to be rich in this town. Especially if you like guns. Poor Lana Clarkson. If only someone had told her NO NO NO you DON'T "make connections" following nutty powerbrokers back to their mansions at three in the morning. Go home, get a good night's rest and work on your scene from Streetcar for tomorrow's class. I don't know what to say so I'll let some of the commenters on today's L.A. times story on Spector do the talking. (See below)

Or as Steve Lopez said in his column today:

Does anyone out there believe some penniless schmo with a dead woman in his house and a gun in his hand would beat the rap if his lawyer was a no-name and he couldn't afford a parade of favorable witnesses?

One thing I will offer -- my services to the prosecution when (if?) they retry the case. FACT: ALL actresses are depressed. BUT NOT SUICIDAL. If so there would be hundreds if not thousands of unemployed-actress-suicides here every day. The acting profession, especially in L.A., is a DEPRESSING vocation. But few people kill themselves over it. Are you kidding me? Everyone is too narcissitic for THAT! Even the most successful actors and actresses are beset with anxiety. And the ones who do commit suicide (Freddie Prinze) or try to (Owen Wilson) are in more anquish over their drug problems than their career. Everyone involved wonders WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING IN THIS RETARDED CRAZY BUSINESS!!?? (uh...oh yeah. Decent Health Insurance. And the occasional free designer outfit.) Portraying Clarkson as just 'depressed' over her acting career can only illicit the following response... yeah, so??? What else is new? Besides, as one of Clarkson's friends who left a comment on the L.A. Times site (see last comment below), she wasn't despondant at all. In fact, she was quite optimistic. Besides, the liklihood of Clarkson offing herself over her anemic resume is pretty far-fetched. And for her to have done so in such a manner is... well, what's the point of saying any more? An expensive defense team could convince any of us that we pulled the trigger that night. The district attorney's office is probably contemplating having a nightcap at Spector's mansion right about now. Talk about depressed!

From the comment page to the L.A. Times story "Money Helped Spector More Than Celebrity":

Can't you see how this happened? She picked up her purse and went towards the door, and then stopped, deciding, "No, I'll kill myself instead of going home." Why can't you see the logic of this?

Let's see... Phil's gun, Phil's history of using guns on women, and most importantly Phil saying,"I think I killed someone." Nope, that's not enough evidence it had to be someone else... perhaps the man from Mars! I'm sure the defense would spin that one if they could. This guy is guilty, guilty, guilty. Also, tell his wife to quit posting the ridiculous comments in his support. We aren't buying it. Bring on the retrial. he's gonna fry!

I really wonder if this beautiful woman was your daughter, sister, mother, best friend (not pi) and was the victim of this freak with a gun, would be saying the same thing about manslaughter, and not guilty! Just askin'

Knowing what Spector was like around Lennon, Nilsson etc... I think this was the scenario: She wanted to leave, he pulled out the gun to show control, power, he fired and actually killed he. I think he's a scrawny punk who probably couldn't purposely hit a barrel but this time he hit and killed someone. Not like Mal Evans digging the bullet out of the recording studio ceiling after he waved the gun at Lennon and Nilsson.

I was with Lana the night she was offered the hostessing job at House Of Blues, and I was with Punkin numerous times following Lana's murder. At NO time did Lana express anything but hope, determination, and enthusiasm for her future, and networking with the world's most legendary music producer would have been exactly the kind of opportunity she thought the hostessing job might provide. And at NO time, EVER, did Punkin Pie express anything but horror and hatred that 'Phil Spector murdered my best friend'-- UNTIL she testified. The prosecution was aware of this and ignored it.

Comments

Had to share this comment that appeared on the LA TIMES story linked from this post:
I was disgusted with the way the defense portrayed Lana Clarkson. They tried to show her as a depressed, suicidal woman. How ridiculous! Do these lawyers know about an actor's life? I do. It’s not easy. I read Lana’s emails and I think she showed tremendous drive. The fact that she made even one movie in LA is an accomplishment because thousands of actors are after any role. Actors face constant rejection. It’s normal to complain to friends when you don’t get cast. So the emails the defense tried to use against her mean zip. I think she was still working hard at making it. But we’ll never know what she was truly capable of.

Has anyonethought that Phil may have staged the whole scene? I think he placed her in that chair,Lord knows he had enough time to stage the scene and clean up and even change clothes for that matter.

I guess the Gurgling Fountain defense didn't work this time. They will have to retool that one before the next Hollywood murder case they defend.

Glad to see he's finally going away for this crime. Hope his 6 years of freedom were fearful for him. It's truly a shame that the punk couldn't at least admit what he had done and spared Lana Clarkson's family and friends the extra pain.

may he rot in the bellies of alligators after they rip him apart publically in a cage while people watch on tv. that way future psyco assholes with retarded hair will think twice before killing someone and no one will have to pay for his living expenses in prison.

oh yeah! this is the real, illogical world. we all get to pay for this murderer's tv, food, bed etc..yippy! go America!:P

screw liberalism

NOT SO FAST there Phil.....its the BIG HOUSE (and not your mansion) for you FREAK BOY!

5-29-09 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Phil Spector was sentenced Friday to 19 years to life in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, who was shot through the mouth in the music producer's home six years ago. Spector, 69, looked straight forward and showed no emotion as Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler ordered a term of 15 years to life for second-degree murder plus four years for personal use of a gun.

Clarkson's mother, Donna, made a brief statement before sentencing, speaking of her daughter's fine qualities, sense of humor, intelligence and dedication to her craft of acting.

"I'm very proud of Lana, proud to be her mother," Donna Clarkson said. She added, "No one should suffer the loss of a child."

The judge also ordered Spector to pay $16,811 in funeral expenses, $9,740 to a state victims' restitution fund and other fees.

Spector, dressed in his customary dark pinstripe suit with a red silk tie, was led away immediately. His attorney asked that he be transferred immediately from county jail to a state prison. It was not immediately known to which prison Spector would be assigned.

Spector gained fame decades ago for what became known as the "Wall of Sound" recording technique that changed rock music.

Clarkson was most famous as the star of Roger Corman's 1985 cult film classic "Barbarian Queen." She was 40 when she died.
