Cruising on DVD!

By Dennis Dermody

Finally! William Friedkin's controversial 1980 film Cruising is coming to DVD. Al Pacino stars as a cop going undercover in the S & M subculture of New York to find a gay killer. People protested wildly at the time while it was being made, and while the movie is a mess it's a fascinating mess, with scenes that are genuinely unnerving. In one scene, Pacino is cruising a man in Central Park saying to another: "Hips or lips?" which had gays howling from coast to coast. But it will be fascinating to see this movie again - on Warner Brothers Home Video on September 18th following a limited theatrical release in NY, L.A. and San Fransisco. On the DVD there will be commentary by Friedkin and two featurettes: The History Of Cruising and Exorcising Cruising.

Dennis,

Thank you so much for posting word on this - I'd heard a long time ago that Friedkin was prepping a DVD release, but then hadn't heard much since.

Hopefully, a "Boys in the Band" DVD release isn't too far behind...

I liked this movie myself...and thought it did have a genuine Creepiness to it;especially the end and what happens to Pacino's character. Is he repulsed by his undercover work to where he feels his heterosexuality is jeopordized or is he awoken to sexual urge that he has maybe supressed...?I'm not really sure why it was so hated by the gay community...? maybe because it comes off as a negative view of the homosexual underworld or perhaps it may cause hate crimes. My gay friends dont seem to hate the movie....maybe because they can see the difference between reality and a hollywood movie.
