The Police Reunion Tour!
By Ann Magnuson
I'd like to score some tickets to The Police reunion show if only to hear them do this song! (Which I've always wanted to cover... and just might when I play -- SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT-- the Steve Allen Theater April 13 & 14!) GAWD, Sting is HOT in this video -- resplendant in all his Dune-era glory! And dig the crazy '80s Thunderdome aesthetic!
I heard Andy Summers when he was on Sex Pistol Steve Jonses' great radio show JONSEY'S JUKEBOX a few weeks ago and he assured everyone that the Police songs were going to be played by just the three of them in the ole, straightforward rock manner (no Sting-ified jazz arrangement or lutes!). The two of them then compared notes about living in L.A.:
AS: It's an illusion
SJ: The weather is not an illustion. The palm trees are real.
AS: (lauhging) A never ending holiday... we love L.A.
SJ: L.A. is my lady.
AS: Southern california is hard to beat.
SJ: I'm with you mate.
I actually saw The Police during their FIRST tour back in... was it 1978? Back then I went to CBGB's nearly every night and I remember very clearly standing at the front chatting with whomever was manning the door and watching this new British band play to a nearly empty house. Seriously, no one was there! I went in to watch this tall blond bassist in a jumpsuit play his little heart out and then went back to talk to my friends.

I relayed that story to Andy Summers in the mid-'90s when I found myself acting beside him in an HBO pilot that never went anywhere (Damien Cromwell's Postcards From America -- starring the amazing Roger Rees as a British journalist who travels the U.S. with his Limey crew trying to discover the 'real' America. I played their American producer. We had loads of laughs shooting this thing. Too bad it never went anywhere because I think it was a GREAT idea and a groovy cast!)
Andy remembered that CBGB's gig and how NO ONE in American knew who they were when they first traversed the country. They won't be playing to empty rooms this time around. In fact, I wonder if anyone out there can get in touch with Mr. Summers for me and see if I can get a couple of tickets to the L.A. show? In exchange for handing those long lost transparancies of the band from a photo shoot during the '80s! (My house was formerly owned by the head of PR at A&M and I found a whole stash of forgotten Police publicity materials stored in the tool shed/basement. I gave them to Andy during the shooting of that ill-fated pilot.)
Damn! I should've kept those! I could probably have gotten some good $$ on eBay!!!

I was at that show too, also when they had the record co. Bottom Line showcase. It seems so long ago I liked them, Stuart Copeland was so hot and tall, I remember Deerfrance seeing him at Jane's offices and telling me how he looked. Sting was great in Quadraphenia too, I saw that so many times back then, little bellboy cap sexily askew. He also was at some Punk Rock movie we all went to see with his pregnant girlfriend Trudie. Ann I am so thankful you make me remember things long forgotten.
