Take That: The Hope Floats Soundtrack
By Alexis Swerdloff

"When life fell apart, love fell into place."
Recognize those bittersweet words? It's the tagline of 1998's Hope Floats, the rom-com directed by Forest Whitaker (who knew?!) and starring Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick Jr. and Gena Rowlands.
The other day, the soundtrack arrived in the mail. "How weird," we thought. "A little late, no?" Apparently, it was early, as the soundtrack is being re-released at the end of April and includes six bonus tracks!
Here's the tracklist:
1. Main Title: Going Home - Dave Grusin *bonus track
2. In Need - Sheryl Crow
3. Honest I Do - The Rolling Stones
4. Chances Are - Martina McBride, Bob Seger
5. All I Get - The Mavericks
6. Paper Wings - Gillian Welch
7. Stop! In the Name of Love - Jonell Mosser
8. Wither, I'm a Flower - Whiskeytown
9. What Makes You Stay - Deana Carter
10. To Get Me To You - Lila McCann
11. Smile - Lyle Lovett
12. When You Love Someone - Bryan Adams
13. To Make You Feel My Love - Trisha Yearwood
14. Daybreak - Barry Manilow *bonus track
15. I Can't Get Next To You - The Temptations *bonus track
16. Cool Night - Paul Davis *bonus track
17. Who Cares Anyway - Laura Harding *bonus track
Want it? It's yours. Just post in the comment box below why you should own it. As always, pictured above with the soundtrack is the lovely Blaire Huntley.

What?!? No one wants this inspirational CD?!?
I kindly throw my hat into the ring, mainly for the Whiskeytown and Gillian Welch songs, but mainly because no cd should be so disrespected that no one would offer it a good home.
Come home, Hope Floats, come home!

By God, I'll take this challenge! My wife and I first started dating in December '99, and one of the first movies we ever watched together was "Hope Floats." I'm not saying I loved it, but, really, what's not to love about the soundtrack? Whiskeytown, Gillian Welch, the Mavericks, and Lyle Lovett for the alt-country kids, Bryan Adams, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Seger for the AOR crowd, Deana Carter, Martina McBride, and Trisha Yearwood for the mainstream country audience, and, wow, 6 bonus tracks including Barry "The Man" Manilow? My wife'll call me a sentimental fool, and I'll groove to Paul Davis' "Cool Night." Sold!

I would like the 'Hope Floats' , because (obviously) I have nothing better to do with my time.

Am I seriously the only one who would want this CD?!?! Well, I admit it. I'm a big wuss and I liked this movie AND I cried through most of it.

This is an awesome soundtrack. Did you actually listen to it before dissing it? The Stones doing Honest I Do is a wonderful tune - very bluesy. I own the original soundtrack and love it so much I would like to own a copy of the re-released edition because they got rid of the 'Make you feel my love" bookends - track one of the original version was done by Garth Brooks, the last track was a version done by Trisha Yearwood. It's a good song but I am happy it is only on this new CD once.

I love the original soundtrack. The artists on it are so great and you get a taste of all of them without having to shell out a bunch of money to buy a cd by each one of them. Plus I loved the movie. Cheesy yes but who doesn't love a little cheese every once in awhile!

I actually own the original soundtrack and it has been one of my favorites. People make knock the movie but I love it and I think the soundtrack is awesome. Perfect for those more subdued days when you want to mello out to some melancholy music. I would love to have the rereleased copy!

I don't want it, but my wife does and she's been through a lot in the past 6 months and this would make her day.
thanks!

My then-girlfriend (now my wife) and I watched this movie together back in 1998, just weeks before we got married. It was the first movie we watched together after getting back together after a 6-month break up. I am a sentimental fool, I admit, but it was this movie that convinced me to ask her the question. Our anniversary is coming up in a few weeks. Being able to give her this soundtrack would be a great anniversary gift.

I have the original OST. People may harp about how they think the movie was horrible, but I think it was a perfectly harmless movie with a great soundtrack. Forest Whitaker? Really? I hope the additional six tracks are worth em. I would really love to have a chance to judge for myself... ^^

I would like a copy of this CD please :)

I like music, I like free music, and my real last name is Huntley.
I think that sharing a last name with the poor put-upon girl should qualify me for the CD.

This has always been one of my favorite soundtracks, and I definitely want the re-released version. I love to listen to the songs when I'm feeling kind of sad or just in the mood for something romantic- it has a lot of great love songs on it.

I would love the soundtrack, just because it will give me the opportunity to say "Bernice, Bernice, Bernice" more often.

I am a big fan of the movie and would love the sound track.

I can't believe no one wants this soundtrack because of the great songs included on it. I would have it in my collection without question. I liked the movie very much too - although it seems I may be one of just a few that did. Sappy movies are my favorite so it follows that this is one I truly liked.

I've been looking for this soundtrack for a while. I'm really happy to see they've included "I Can't Get Next to You." It's one of my favorite songs in the movie. I was dissappointed it didn't make the original release. It's a movie about the one that got away...and then comes back. If only the one that got away would come back....

I had this soundtrack once and let a friend borrow it and then we lost touch. I bought it initially because everything about the move mirrored my life ... the woman who was once something amazing, loses herself to a guy, then doesn't recognize or know how to go back to being herself once he's gone. The desperation that come when the relationship you thought was perfect suddenly ends and you're not dead and have to figure out what to do with yourself. The movie was incredible. When Harry Conick, Jr. tells her that dancin' ain't nothin but a conversation between two people, and then simply says, "Talk to me," who doesn't just want to be in the arms of someone who says something so simple, yet so sweet. The soundrack embodies everything the movie does: love (To Make you Feel MY Love), incredible sadness (In Need), that confusing period when you know you should move on, but you just can't bring yourself to (What Makes You Stay), the happiness when you find the next great someone and realize that everything was actually kind of worth it in a sick-life-can-be-cruel kind of way (To Get Me To You) and finally, of course, hope (Smile). This is one of those movies like "Pulp Fiction," in that the movie is great as is the soundtrack and both stand alone as incredible works of art. I deserve this soundtrack because I've lived it. Please send it my way.

I really liked the movie and I like a couple of the songs. I would never actually spend any money buying the cd, but if its free I'll take it.
Posted at 10:25 a.m. ET on Apr 10, 2007 by cindy
This soundtrack immersed itself in the movie so effortlessly, you didn't spend your time thinking "I like this song", it was just a part of the movie. Awesome soundtrack, terrific movie I have watched many times. I would love the soundtrack.

My friend and I were planning on exchanging our worst cd's- I think I found the one I want to send to him.

My wife has watched this movie probably 50 or 60 times, she has a thing for Harry Connick. Doesn't bother me, however, since we're BOTH from New Orleans. Any way, my anniversary is coming up and if I get this CD, would go a long way toward making my life easier! Thanks!

I would LOVE this CD.
I think the movie was so uplifting. The original soundtrack was very touching but this re-released version looks even better!

When this movie came out....I was in a very similar situation....so much that my best friend gave the movie to me.....to remind me that "Hope Floats".

My friend has been going through a rough time lately. His fiance left him and now he has to sell his house and take a huge loss. I know its not much but hes a huge fan of Harry Conick Jr. and loves all types of music. I think something like this could at least put a smile on his face for one day...

Who wouldn't want this packaged walk down memory lane. Besides - how can I go on without the bonus trax! Hook me up - I love the song sung by Trisha.....written by none other than Billy "Uptown girl" Joel.

This movie was the first film I saw with my ex boyfriend. The soundtrack was always one we loved (especially the Sheryl Crow song), and when we broke up the bastard took it with him.
I don't miss him, but I do miss the soundtrack!

Why do I want it? I make all sorts of crafty things with cds. An artist? Nope just bored. Hope Floats could be integrated into a lovely window covering, coaster, mobile or even one half of a breast plate!

I would love to have this soundtrack cd, as it would make up for the disappointment I feel everytime I watch Hope Floats on ABC Family. For some reason, the editors at ABC Family feel the need to end the movie before the last seen, when sweet little Bernice finally likes that her mom and Justin are together. Bernice turns to her mom as asks, "Does this mean my name is going to be Bernice Matisse?" It the best part of the whole movie. Actually just the only part I like. But I never get to see it. Having the soundtrack might make up for that.

I think my story will top most, if not all, of what's out there now.
I went to see this movie with my best friend Megan when we were in high school.
Our town didn't have a movie theater, so we went to the nearest theater, two towns over.
My aunt and uncle live in that town, and, unbeknownst to me, my parents had gone to visit them that same night.
On their way back, they decided to see if my friend and I were out of the movie yet, so they stopped by the theater.
We weren't, but they found my car in the parking lot... and decided to play a dirty, dirty trick.
My parents had a spare set of keys to my car, and at the time, I was driving a Saturn, which had backseats that folded down from the trunk.
My parents unlocked the car. My brother climbed into the trunk through the backseat and held the backseats up so that you couldn't tell they were "unhooked."
When Megan and I got out of the movie and got in the car, my brother jumped out of the trunk into the backseat, scaring the $&*^ out of Megan and I and giving my parents (parked a few spaces away) a HUGE laugh.
I shook the ENTIRE way home that night, and I deserve the CD for the childhood trauma I experienced that continues to haunt me to this day.
If not for that, than for using the word "beknownst."
:-)

Great movie, one of the best chick flicks that a guy can watch, too. Loved the movie so much I bought the rental store's copy the next day. Didn't even know there was a soundtrack!
Posted at 1:00 p.m. ET on Apr 10, 2007 by Vanessa P.
While this movie was pummeled by many critics, I found it to be an excellent lesson on the courage it takes to rebuild your life after circumstances beyond your control send you into a downward spiral. When my life took that turn, it took watching this movie to remind me that I needed to pick myself up by the bootstraps and stop feeling sorry for myself and get it back together again. Let's also not forget Bernice's performance. That meltdown she had in front of her grandmother's house was both heart-wrenching and surprising coming from such a young actress. Whenever I have a friend who thinks they are at the bottom of their life and can't get back up, I have them watch this movie with me. It's saved me from wallowing in self pity on more than one occassion, and the soundtrack would be a wonderful way to remind myself on a daily basis to appreciate what I have and stop mourning things I have lost that I have no control over.

I must have this CD. I am actually amazed that they released a CD for a movie that stars Harry Conick Jr. and it doesn't even have one song on it that he sings. Plus, I have been nicknamed "Birdie" by means of experience from my friends.
Posted at 1:36 p.m. ET on Apr 10, 2007 by Jan
I liked the movie and I liked the soundtrack. It would be nice to have the new soundtrack with new songs too. At one time, I was in Birdie's situation with my children. This movie helped all of us remember that things do get better. I have always liked Sandra Bullock and I loved her in this movie. The little girl who played Bernice was awesome. My children really identified with what she was going through.

I was in college when this movie first came out. One of our friends would sing "Chances are..." a million times in a row, totally off key. I don't know why, but it always made us crack up. We listened to this soundtrack so many times that I swear I still have dreams about it. The funny thing is that my roommate owned the CD so I don't think I've heard it in over 8 years. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a new copy.

My original copy of this CD is so worn out, it doesn't sound very good anymore so I would love to have a new copy. :)

I need this CD! While based on all the posts I may be Going Home empty handed, I am desperately In Need of this CD. Honest, I Do think I deserve the album. The Chances Are thin, I know. Typically, I never win anything. All I Get are cheesy knick-knacks, take Paper Wings for example. When it comes to reading other people’s posts for this CD, just Stop! In the Name of Love and give me that CD! Or else I may Wither (I’m a Flower). My mission is clear: to make you understand that I need this CD; To Get Me to You, so to speak. If I find that I do get this CD, I’ll smile of course. Like When You Love Someone. Have I convinced you yet? Have I been able To Make You Feel My Love for Hope Floats? Come Daybreak tomorrow, I hope I will find myself the winner. I may be too late with this post, after all, I Can’t Get Next To You. But what a Cool Night it will be with the Hope Floats soundtrack in my hands! And if I don’t when it? Who Cares Anyway!

I GOTTA HAVE IT! You wont find such a deliciously ecletic assortment anywhere other than Jack In The Box at 4am! The Stones, The Temptations, Whiskeytown and a pic of Harry and Sandra all together in one place make this CD a serious must have.
PS - Alexis, let me know if you are hiring an editor. I can spell includes. ;-)

I would like the CD to complete my Dylan catalog. In the span of a year and a half his song "To Make you feel my Love" was recorded by no less than 4 people (including the Bard himself)
Dylan on Time out of Mind
Garth Brooks on Fresh Horses
Billy Joel on His Greatest Hits Vol III package
and Trisha here...

I LOVED this original soundtrack, and was totally bummed to find that I couldn't replace it when it got stepped on in my car a few years ago. This remains one of my favorite movies, and I'd love to have the soundtrack again!

Great movie!!!........ofcourse filmed in Texas.............Where's Jack Ingram? He was performing in the background at the dance?

I would love to have this because I'm a big Harry Connick Jr. fan and this is the only album I know of that he appears on (in the picture of course) but doesn't actually appear _on_ the CD!
You have HARRY CONNICK JR. and you don't have him perform anything for the soundtrack? Are you mad!??!
Still, the movie was sweet (I have to love a romantic comedy that reminds me of watching Springer back in my college days) and the music itself is nice to listen to as well (even if there's no Harry!!!)
This would be a great way to add it to my Harry collection without having to dip into the formula/diaper fund, so my daughter and I thank you greatly in advance. So far she seems to like Harry herself, but not enough to give up her Huggies.
Cheers!
Beth and Riley
(and her Dad who will roll his eyes at another chick-flick cd coming into the house...)

I liked this movie a lot when it came out and bought the soundtrack. I put it in my car's 6 disc cd player (mounted in the trunk). Someone broke into my car and stole all my cd's. I'm sure they threw out this soundtrack as they ran down the street, but it was always one of my favorites !

Hope Floats is one of my favorite movies that I can watch over and over again. The soundtrack is awesome. The song "Chances Are" just brings tears to my eyes. I've been trying to find who wrote that particular song, and that's what brought me here to this site. I would love a copy of this CD!
thanks!
