Daniel Fuller

There are several Daniel Fullers. The first is the Hawaii-born kid who left school at 15 to become a pro surfer. Found on the cover of Transworld Surf and each year at the Billabong Pipeline Masters tournament, the 30-year-old travels to the ends of the earth to find the most monstrous waves. "I'll get a phone call from someone saying, 'It looks really big in Tahiti,' and I'll go tomorrow," he says.
Then there's Fuller the photographer, whose landscapes have earned him high-profile shows like the 2012 Brucennial, and the all-important nod by his pal, artist Julian Schnabel. "He's probably the harshest critic of anyone, especially his friends," Fuller says.
Finally, there is a third Fuller, existing somewhere in between, who appears in ads for his sponsors, Gravis, Oakley and RVCA. This Fuller currently stars in the recent video ad campaign for Chanel's Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme, shot by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow. "I am the worst actor on the planet," he says. "But Kathryn made me feel so comfortable. She kept reminding me to do what felt natural."
Natural is the key for the Fullers, all of them. His photos--like the double rainbow captured at 1:17 in the morning on his home island of Kauai--present his intimate connection with an extreme, natural world many of us can never touch. "Something that's so appealing for me in creating these images is actually physically being out there, being a part of Mother Nature," he says. Undaunted by his travels through the worlds of high art and fashion, his ideal subject remains the same: "It's the ocean."
Daniel wears a sweatshirt by Jack Spade, shirt by RVCA, and a scarf by Louis Vuitton.
