Brady Corbet

Beautiful People 2012

Brady Corbet
"It's dark subject matter that interests me," Brady Corbet says, describing what draws him to a role. At 13, Corbet first impressed audiences in the coming-of-age-meets-cautionary tale, Thirteen, playing Evan Rachel Wood's older brother. Now, at 23, the actor continues to go after darker material, having taken on unsettling parts like a cult member in Sundance breakout Martha Marcy May Marlene and a young ad exec who shares a tragicomic moment with Kirsten Dunst's character in Melancholia.

If the actor's roles have heretofore reached an "8" or "9" on a noir scale, perhaps his latest project, playing the titular character in Antonio Campos' Simon Killer, will hit Spinal Tap's proverbial "11." Corbet plays a recent college grad who moves to Paris following a breakup and becomes involved with a prostitute. The New York- based actor, who also helped conceive of the film with Campos, says that the movie's exploration of violence and misogyny took inspiration from the life of Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch man linked to the Natalee Holloway disappearance and convicted of killing a Peruvian woman. It was the idea that a seemingly "regular guy" can be capable of unthinkable violence that drew Corbet and Campos to the story.

Despite immersing himself in such disturbing subject matter, the actor likes to unwind with some lighter fare. "I will watch any romantic comedy. The shittier it is, the more I like it," Corbet says. "I think an incredibly underappreciated romantic comedy is Life As We Know It. I saw it on an airplane and wept."
